Wicketkeeper John Simpson saved Middlesex blushes with an unbeaten 50 that denied Unicorns a notable YB40 win at Lord’s.Simpson, only recalled to the Middlesex side after Adam Rossington picked up a hand injury, kept a cool head to clinch a one-wicket victory with only five balls to spare. The defeat was cruel on Unicorns, who put in a spirited display with bat and ball only to stay bottom of Group C and without a win.In pursuit of 209 for a fifth win in nine starts, Middlesex lost Dawid Malan to a good tumbling catch by keeper Lewis Hill, but re-grouped with a second-wicket stand of 65 between Paul Stirling and Joe Denly.Stirling’s fun ended for 42 when he danced down the pitch to Hampshire 2nd XI leg-spinner Josh Poysden to be stumped by a couple of yards. Poysden enjoyed further success pegging back Eoin Morgan’s off stump as he looked to reverse sweep, and then in trapping Gareth Berg lbw as he attempted to slog sweep.Unicorns took pace off the ball by introducing left-arm spinner Luke Beaven at the Pavilion End who had Neil Dexter caught at deep cover off a miscued back-foot force. Denly moved to a 63-ball 50 before he too fell to Beaven, bowled when working across the line to leg to make it 140 for six. With nerves jangling, Ollie Rayner aimed to push drive at a Chris Skidmore away swinger to be caught behind, then Toby Roland-Jones went back in defence to his first ball to go leg before to Beaven, who finished with 3 for 43.With Middlesex still needing 24, Skidmore found the outside edge of James Harris’s bat for Hill to pull off a stunning catch diving full length in front of slip. With four required Unicorns lost a concerted appeal when umpire Martin Saggers turned down their run-out calls as Simpson scampered a third to tie the scores. The left-hander then clipped the first ball of the final over for a single to move to 50 from 48 balls to complete a nervy win.Batting first despite losing the toss, the winless Unicorns were thankful to veteran Keith Parsons, whose unbeaten 64 helped the visitors limp past 200 for a modest 40-over total of 208 for 7.The part-timers looked to make a positive start as left-handed opener Matt Lineker clipped the second ball of the game from Steven Finn to the ropes in front of the Grandstand. Lineker, the former Derbyshire batsman, then played back in defence against James Harris only to drag an off cutter onto his leg stump.Ex-Surrey bat Tom Lancefield also went for his shots, clattering five fours in a cameo 28 before a rush of blood led to his demise. Running down the pitch looking to drive at Roland-Jones, the left hander skied to cover where Malan clung on.Michael O’Shea never found his form during a 42-minute stay that ended with a mistimed drive to mid-on against Roland-Jones. The frenetic nature of the Unicorns innings continued through Hill, who clubbed 31 from 29 balls including four fours, before a slash drive against offspinner Stirling flew into the hands of Berg at extra cover to make it 103 for 4.Common sense prevailed when the experienced Garry Park and former Somerset stalwart Parsons combined for a fifth wicket stand of 77 in 13 overs. Park, who played 47 first-class games for Durham and Derbyshire, chipped in with 43 from 58 balls before skying to mid-on to give Roland-Jones figures of 3 for 33.In the next over Aneurin Norman was caught behind off Finn, leaving 40-year-old Parsons to move to a 54-ball 50 with four fours and a six. Beaven was caught in the deep off Harris in the 38th over but Parsons, playing in his 134th List A match, finished as unbeaten top-scorer.

Warner suspended until first Ashes Test

David Warner’s bar-room altercation with Joe Root looks set to cost him his Test place after he was suspended for the rest of the Champions Trophy and Australia’s two Ashes warm-up games

David Warner’s bar-room altercation with Joe Root could yet cost him his Test place after he was suspended for the rest of the Champions Trophy and Australia’s two Ashes warm-up games. Although Warner will be available for the first Test at Trent Bridge, his lack of match practice would make it difficult for the selectors to choose him, which raises the possibility of either Shane Watson or Chris Rogers returning to the opening role.Warner faced a Cricket Australia Code of Behaviour hearing by teleconference on Thursday evening Australian time and while he avoided being sent home from the tour, he was fined A$11,500 on top of the suspension. For the second time in less than a month – the first followed his Twitter spat with two journalists – Warner pleaded guilty to breaching rule six of the Code of Behaviour, which deals with “unbecoming behaviour”.Although Cricket Australia did not release further details of the hearing or Warner’s response to the charge, the chief executive James Sutherland is due to face the media on Friday morning. Warner was alleged to have thrown a punch at Root while members of the England and Australia teams were at the Walkabout pub in Birmingham following their game on Saturday, in what the ECB described in a statement as “an unprovoked attack”.There were reports that Warner believed Root was impersonating Hashim Amla when wearing a false beard, but the England camp has said Root was making fun of himself and referring to taunts from his team-mates that he was too young to grow facial hair. Warner was stood down from Australia’s Champions Trophy match against New Zealand on Wednesday and after the game, stand-in captain George Bailey said the altercation was “very minor” and had “been dealt with in-house”.The suspension caps off a disappointing six months for Warner, who in January was reprimanded under the ICC Code of Conduct for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an ODI against Sri Lanka, and then frustrated team management on the Test tour of India with his poor fitness and skin-fold results. Runs have not been flowing either – since the start of 2013 Warner has averaged 28 in Tests 20.75 in one-day internationals, and he started the England tour with 0, 0 and 9.The combination of factors makes it hard to see how Warner could retain his Test place for the start of the Ashes, unless the rest of the top order misfires in the warm-ups against Somerset and Worcestershire. Rogers, who is the leading run scorer in county cricket this season with 777 at 77.70, was already a strong contender to return to the opening spot he occupied in his only Test, against India in 2008, while Watson could also fill the role.Watson has failed to have any significant impact with the bat in Test cricket since moving down the order from the opening position and his record at the top is much more impressive. Rogers, Watson and the other incumbent opener Ed Cowan will all be keen to impress in the warm-up matches in Warner’s absence. There are no further tour matches until the Australians take on Sussex in the lead-up to the third Test, which could be Warner’s first chance to score runs in a match situation if he is overlooked for the first two Tests.

Waqar joins Sunrisers as bowling consultant

Waqar Younis, the former Pakistan fast bowler, captain and coach, will be joining Sunrisers Hyderabad as a bowling consultant for the 2013 IPL season. Waqar will be the second Pakistani bowling coach in the IPL, following the footsteps of his former new-ball partner Wasim Akram, who has performed the same role with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders since 2010. Akram, though, has taken a break this season.Former Australia allrounder Tom Moody, who is the Sunrisers’ head coach, was active in hiring Waqar, who is based in Sydney. “Tom is a fine buddy since our playing days and he asked me if I could come and help and I accepted the offer,” Waqar told ESPNcricinfo. “I want to go and have a feel about it and how it works.”After he stepped down as Pakistan’s head coach in September 2011, Waqar coached Ruhuna Royals in the inaugural Sri Lanka Premier League last year. During his stint as Pakistan coach, Waqar was instrumental in leading Pakistan to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Twenty20 in the West Indies where they were silenced by Michael Hussey’s heroics late in the match.Waqar said the IPL job would be a good challenge. “I am going to go the way I go about things. It will be a good experience for me also to interact with a lot of fast bowlers.” And he has already set himself a goal: working closely with the Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma. “I am really excited to work with Ishant Sharma. He can be a better bowler than he is.”Dale Steyn, Clint McKay, Sudeep Tyagi are some of the other quick bowlers in the Sunrisers squad, who are bound to benefit from Waqar’s vast experience.”We hope Waqar’s experience and Steyn’s expertise will help our bowlers restrict the opposition batsmen’s charge and reduce the pressure on our batsmen,” a Sunrisers’ official said on Waqar’s appointment.Last October, the Sunrisers replaced Deccan Chargers in the IPL after the BCCI had terminated the contract with Deccan Chronicles Holdings Ltd (owners of the Chargers), due to a prolonged financial crisis. Sun TV network successfully bid for the franchise rights for 85.05 crores per year (approx $15.9m) for a five-year deal.Sunrisers Hyderabad Squad: Akshath Reddy, Amit Mishra, Anand Rajan, Ankit Sharma, Ashish Reddy, Biplab Samantray, Cameron White, Chris Lynn, Clint McKay, Dale Steyn, Darren Sammy, Dwaraka Ravi Teja, Hanuma Vihari, Ishant Sharma, JP Duminy (currently injured), Karan Sharma, Kumar Sangakkara, Nathan McCullum, Parthiv Patel, Quinton de Kock, Sachin Rana, Shikhar Dhawan, Sudeep Tyagi, Thalaivan Sargunam, Thisara Perera, Veer Pratap Singh.

Samuels 'not well liked' – White

Cameron White, the Melbourne Stars batsman, has labelled as “remarkable” the reprimand given to his Melbourne Renegades opponent Marlon Samuels over the altercation that earned Shane Warne a one-match BBL suspension

Cameron White, the Melbourne Stars batsman, has labelled as “remarkable” the reprimand given to his Melbourne Renegades opponent Marlon Samuels over the altercation that earned Shane Warne a one-match BBL suspension. White has also refused to apologise for not going to the aid of Samuels when he suffered a severe facial injury from a Lasith Malinga bouncer later in the same match.Warne was banned for a match after he grabbed the shirt of Samuels during the second innings of the January 6 game and while Samuels was also charged with breaching the Code of Conduct, his hearing was delayed by a fortnight due to his injury. Samuels was let off with a reprimand after the Code of Conduct commissioner John Price ruled that Samuels threw his bat after “extreme provocation” from Warne, who had just thrown a ball that hit Samuels. However, the problems had started with an incident earlier in the match when Samuels was bowling and appeared to grab the Stars batsman David Hussey, who was turning to complete a second run. The charge that emerged from that incident, that Samuels “engaged in deliberate or inappropriate physical contact with a player or official”, was dismissed.”Being provoked, I don’t think you can use that as an excuse,” White said in Melbourne on Tuesday. “It’s remarkable, isn’t it? How many times have you seen someone throw their cricket bat on a cricket field and get [reprimanded] for being extremely provoked? I’ve never seen it before. That’s what the judiciary came up with.”The heated nature of the match continued when Samuels was struck by a bouncer and the only Stars player who came to check on his welfare was the bowler, Malinga. The injury proved to be serious enough to rule Samuels out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia and meant he was confined to his hotel room for the past two weeks, but White said there were a number of reasons the Stars players did not come to Samuels’ aid.”I don’t think he’s very well-liked, definitely not just from the Stars’ point of view but probably in Australian cricket,” White said. “People think he carries on a bit. There’s probably a few reasons [we didn’t check on him]. We were quite busy.”

Bangladesh, New Zealand clash with point to prove

ESPNcricinfo previews the Group D match between Bangladesh and New Zealand

The Preview by Mohammad Isam20-Sep-2012Match factsSeptember 21, 2012
Start time 1530 local (1000 GMT)An explosive start by Brendon McCullum could fire up New Zealand in the Group of Death•Associated PressBig PictureNew Zealand, considered underdogs for the tournament, will open their World Twenty20 campaign against a team that is also considered this year’s dark horses and actually hold a mental edge over them – Bangladesh crushed the visiting New Zealand side 4-0 in a one-day series, and though that was two years ago, the memory is fresh for the eight members of the current squad who rejoiced with the cricket-crazy nation at the time. But Bangladesh have to quickly realise New Zealand will be eager to take the lead in a group that also contains Pakistan.Ross Taylor will lead a side that has traditionally done well in multi-team tournaments, where they gel as a unit to reduce the gap between them and more talented or experienced sides. But this hasn’t been a very positive year for New Zealand. They did start the 2011-12 season with home and away wins over Zimbabwe on either side of a drawn Test series in Australia – which included win in Hobart – but it has been downhill ever since, losing at home to South Africa and away to West Indies in all three formats. There was a spark of hope coming into this tournament, as they recovered from a Test-series loss in India to take the rain-hit Twenty20 series 1-0 with a win in Chennai. Subsequently, in a way, this is a great stage for New Zealand – they get a global tournament in which to impress and make up for a poor year. The main issue for them is fitness: Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee and Rob Nicol went to Kandy a day later than the rest of the team, too sick to travel on the stipulated day. The trio suffered gastro problems in Colombo, but have since recovered and are likely to be fit for selection. Also, Kyle Mills, who was recovering from his collision with Brendon McCullum during the India T20, had a bout of laryngitis. He too is expected to be fit.Still, whether they are tested would entirely depend on how much fight Bangladesh can provide. Bangladesh, as opposed to New Zealand, come into this competition confident and well-prepared: after their rousing Asia Cup performance, they have devoted the Bangladesh off-season to exclusively playing Twenty20s.The recent history between the two sides, the talent within them and their strong reasons for needing to reach the Super Eights could produce a tremendous encounter.Form guideBangladesh LWLWW (completed matches, most recent first)
New Zealand WLLLL
Watch out forBrendon McCullum, the man who has played some of the most memorable Twenty20 innings since the format’s inception. It is not really a surprise that he is the leading run-scorer in Twenty20 internationals. His most recent chartbuster came from No. 3 against India and he could continue in that role.Bangladesh would expect Tamim Iqbal, their most destructive batsman, to be the fire-starter. Like McCullum, he can carve up an attack if things go to plan. But that’s where the similarities end. Tamim hasn’t fulfilled expectations in Twenty20 cricket, but the recent series in Europe and, especially, the Sri Lanka Premier League have helped him understand the format’s demands.Team newsFor once Bangladesh have a settled line-up in Twenty20 cricket. The modified top-order would mean persistence with Mohammad Ashraful as Tamim’s opening partner and Shakib Al Hasan at No. 3. Shakib’s promotion would leave the middle-order with the task of finishing games, with Mushfiqur Rahim leading the way, and Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah for company. Ziaur Rahman and Mashrafe Mortaza will provide the big-hitting down the order. The only change, mainly due to conditions in Pallekele that are not too conducive to spin bowling, could be that Abul Hasan’s pace is preferred to the left-arm spin of Elias Sunny. Jahurul Islam, Farhad Reza and Junaid Siddique will only get a look-in if there’s an injury.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Mohammad Ashraful, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 5 Nasir Hossain, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Ziaur Rahman, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Elias Sunny/Abul HasanNew Zealand possess some prominent T20 cricketers; the key for Taylor would be to put together a line-up that balances attack and defence. He would be mindful of keeping the Bangladesh top-order quiet – Nathan McCullum could take the new ball to counter left-hander Tamim, but the difficulty would be to pick between four specialist pace bowlers who offer something different. Southee, if he has recovered sufficiently, would be picked on form, but Doug Bracewell and Adam Milne have pace, while Mills has guile.New Zealand (probable) 1 Rob Nicol, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Brendon McCullum (wk), 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Ross Taylor (capt), 6 Jacob Oram, 7 James Franklin, 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Tim Southee/Doug Bracewell, 11 Kyle Mills/Adam MilnePitch and conditionsThe batsmen would be happy to know that the Pallekele pitches offer a better run-rate than the other two venues at the World Twenty20 and New Zealand have some idea of this venue’s profligate nature: they racked up a 300-plus score against Pakistan in the World Cup here last year and won by 110 runs. The weather, however, could ruin the contest, as there is forecast of rain in the area at noon on Friday.Stats and trivia Bangladesh have played one-fourth of all their T20Is in July this year.New Zealand have been involved in three tied games so far, the most by any team.Quotes”If we had played some of our build-up matches against top teams, preparations would have been a little better. Still, with us playing together for quite some time now, I believe this is our best Twenty20 team.”
“It’s a very tough group and it’s going to be a tough game. We can’t take them for granted, they have got some world-class players in their side and we know that. We have respect for them and we can only control how we play.”

Time consistente, alto.
