Zaheer backs Agarkar but draws selector's flak

Mumbai’s chairman of selectors has said he was “very hurt” at Zaheer Khan comments on the axeing of Ajit Agarkar from Mumbai’s XI for the Ranji Trophy game against Orissa

The dropping of Ajit Agarkar is snowballing into a larger issue•Sportz Solutions

Ajit Agarkar’s decision to return home from Cuttack after being dropped by Mumbai for the Ranji Trophy match against Orissa has spun off a separate controversy, with his team-mate Zaheer Khan defending him and in turn being criticised by Milind Rege, Mumbai’s chairman of selectors.Zaheer had said Rege and Sulakshan Kulkarni, the Mumbai coach, could have handled the situation with better “communication” and that there was no need to “humiliate” Agarkar.”I am not the kind of person to say all this, but I just feel that people like Rege and Sulakshan are actually pulling Mumbai cricket back,” Zaheer had told Mid-Day. “This is an utter disgrace. I am very disappointed and hurt by the way the whole situation has been handled. It is high time things get sorted out.”A disappointed Agarkar left Cuttack on the morning of the match despite Rege and Nitin Dalal, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) secretary, asking him to stay with the team.”I am very hurt,” Rege told ESPNcricinfo, when asked about Zaheer’s reaction. “Because if anybody questions my ability to select or my judgment, it is an opinion of the other person. But if anybody questions my integrity, I will not accept it.”Rege, a former Mumbai captain, said Zaheer should not have made a “personal attack” on him. “He is a very mild guy and I do not know what provoked him to say something so harsh. It is not fair on his part.”Agarkar said he was upset that he hadn’t been informed of the team management’s decision to drop him earlier, and was told of it only on the eve of the match. Zaheer supported Agarkar’s decision. “A player who has done so much for the country and state, has taken over 300 international wickets, has been consistent performer and a certainty in the team at least deserves better communication and respect. There is no reason to humiliate someone who has done great service to your team.”Explaining his decision to leave the squad, Agarkar said what hurt him most was that Rege, who had helped him play for the Tatas, did not inform him in advance. Rege disagreed, saying the policy of the selection panel was clear: select the 15 and then let the captain and coach pick the final XI. “The selection committee feels the coach and the captain are the people on the job on the ground, so how can we select the team five days prior to match. The strategies are discussed in the selection committee but the final decision of whom to take or whom not to take in the XI depends on the wicket and the conditions.”Rege he had spoken to Agarkar on the morning of the game. “He was extremely upset. He was not in a frame of mind to listen. I pleaded with him, literally, to not come back and we would sort out the issue. Even Nitin Dalal tried to convince him. But he was not prepared not to listen.”Rege, however, was confident the issue could be resolved. “I will sit with Ajit and try and defuse the situation.” He said Agarkar would be considered during their next selection committee meeting on Saturday to pick the squad for Mumbai’s match against Saurashtra in Rajkot from December 6.

Samaraweera dropped for Pakistan Tests

Dinesh Chandimal has been recalled to Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the series against Pakistan in the UAE and is one of four wicketkeeper-batsmen in the 16-man party. Middle-order batsman Thilan Samaraweera, 34, and spinner Ajantha Mendis are the major omissions from the squad that lost 1-0 to Australia at home, while legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna was also left out.”Thilan will not come into the reckoning in our long term plans,” Duleep Mendis, the chairman of selectors, said. “We intend giving youngsters an opportunity while the seniors are around. He might be considered on a short-term basis.”Apart from Chandimal, who was part of the Test squad in England this summer but did not debut, fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep and another wicketkeeper-batsman Kaushal Silva were the two other uncapped players called into the side. Chandimal has played 12 ODIs and seven Twenty20s, though, and is presently representing Ruhuna in the Champions League Twenty20 in India. Neither Pradeep nor Silva has any international caps.Samaraweera scored only 86 runs at an average of 21.50 in the first two home Tests against Australia and was dropped for the third match at the SSC. Sri Lanka adjusted to his absence by batting the captain Tillakaratne Dilshan in the middle order while Lahiru Thirimanne opened with Tharanga Paranavitana. Dilshan is likely to continue batting in the middle order.Mendis did not play any of the Tests against Australia because of a back injury he sustained during the preceding ODI series and he remained unavailable for selection. Prasanna made his debut in the second Test in Pallekele and took 0 for 80 in the match. The squad contained five fast bowlers in Chanaka Welegedara, Suranga Lakmal, Dammika Prasad, Shaminda Eranga and Pradeep and only two specialist spinners – Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv. Angelo Mathews was selected as a batsman because he was not yet fit to bowl.”Angelo has gone to Australia for treatment for his left knee and we will not risk bowling him in the series,” Mendis said.Sri Lanka play three Tests against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah starting on October 18.Squad: Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), Angelo Mathews (vc), Tharanga Paranavitana, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Rangana Herath, Suraj Randiv, Chanaka Welegedara, Suranga Lakmal, Shaminda Eranga, Dammika Prasad, Nuwan Pradeep, Kaushal Silva (wk).

Dixey, Naik guide Leicestershire draw

Paul Dixey scored the first County Championship half-century of his career to help Leicestershire salvage a draw against Gloucestershire at Grace Road

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2011

Paul Dixey scored the first County Championship half-century of his career to help Leicestershire salvage a draw against Gloucestershire at Grace Road. The 23-year-old wicketkeeper, released by Kent at the end of last season, made an unbeaten 72 in sharing an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 111 with Jigar Naik to deny Gloucestershire victory on a tense final day in the Division Two clash.Following on 181 runs behind, Leicestershire were deep in trouble when they slumped to 134 for 5 with seamer Will Gidman claiming three of the wickets. But Dixey and Naik stayed together for 31 overs, and the teams shook hands on a draw at the start of the final hour, with Leicestershire at 245 for 5, leading by 64 runs.Although Dixey has a first-class century to his name for Durham University against Lancashire, he never played a championship game for Kent, and has been taken on trial by Leicestershire this season. He is currently standing in for the injured Tom New, and this valuable innings will have done his chances of securing a contract at Grace Road no harm at all.Dixey faced 112 balls and struck 10 fours and a six, while Naik provided excellent support with an unbeaten 32 off 106 balls. The sixth-wicket pair changed the course of a game that looked to be in Gloucestershire’s grasp from the moment Ian Saxelby bowled last man Nadeem Malik in the third over of the morning. That left Leicestershire, all out for 323, still needing another 181 runs to avoid an innings defeat. They were soon on the back foot with Gidman having opener Matt Boyce caught low down at mid-wicket in the 11th over. Will Jefferson followed a few minutes before lunch, trapped lbw as he tried to work offspinner Kane Williamson away on the leg side.Three more wickets fell in the afternoon session, with Saxelby finding the edge against Kadeer Ali, and Gidman claiming the wickets off Josh Cobb and Andrew McDonald. Cobb was out lbw, and McDonald taken by wicketkeeper Jon Batty as he tried to drive on the off side.At that stage Gloucestershire looked firm favourites to clinch victory, but Dixey and Naik pulled things round with some sensible and solid batting. Dixey reached his maiden half-century by sweeping Vikram Banerjee to the boundary, and then illustrated his growing confidence with a superb six off Williamson that brought up the century partnership. The draw earned Leicestershire seven points, while Gloucestershire collected 11.

Niall O'Brien aims high after 'regulation' win

Niall O’Brien said he knew that his kid brother Kevin, was warming up for a big one when he saw him on the field in Ireland’s match against England on Wednesday night. There were, apparently, some signs of smoke. O’Brien Junior had misfielded, wrenched his knee and Niall, told ESPNcricinfo, he knew the runs were going to come because, “in the field he was grumpy, he was moping around… when he’s like that, he tends to kinda take the bull by the horns as it were.” Niall, 29, said, “I don’t know why he was grumpy, I think he just slept badly or something, he had misfielded few balls, he hurt his knee and I just knew, that he had that kind of look in his eye.”The look in the eye turned into the power of Kevin’s bat, “he’s got that strength and the ability to hit the ball out of the ground,” his brother said. Kevin’s stormtrooper century (113 off 63b), the fastest at the World Cup (100 off 50 balls), set the record for the highest World Cup chase, and threw England’s campaign into total turmoil after an upset three-wicket win.Niall, wicketkeeper and Man of the Match during Ireland’s stunning victory over Pakistan in the 2007 World Cup called the Irish win on Wednesday night, “regulation.” The distance travelled by Ireland in the last four years, he said, should have prepared cricket for last night’s performance. “In the last four years, we’ve come a long way. In 2007, we were only a few professional cricketers and we created a lot of shocks. These aren’t shocks.”Everyone is surprised, there is a lot of media hype, but for us, this is regulation. We should have beaten Bangladesh, we have beaten England.” Ireland, he said, expected to win every game they played. “We play India on Sunday, we expect to win, we want to win. We have respect for every team we play against, equally they all have respect for us.” Ireland’s victory has now thrown open the group. The next step for the team, O’Brien said, would be regular matches against the world’s frontline teams, “We want to play cricket full-time, we want to play cricket all around the world, we want to travel to Australia, travel to India, travel to Sri Lanka, New Zealand, everywhere. We want to play cricket on the future tours programme.” He said the team wanted to “give ourselves the chance” to play a good number of ODIs and T20Is every year. “They probably play 20-30 one day games, and 15-20 Twenty20s per year and we would love to do that for two-three years and see how we pan out. If after two-three years we are not good enough, so be it. At least we could try. I think we’ve got a great squad of players and we’ve got, I think, the strongest team spirit in this tournament.”The support given to the Irish by the Indian crowd, he said, meant that Ireland had the “Indian public behind us.” The next step would be, “to play well for another two or three weeks and hopefully Indian cricket and the BCCI will get behind us, the strongest power in world cricket.” The possibility of an IPL contract excited both brothers, “so hopefully we can do well and hopefully they will come and speak to us so that myself and Kevin come and live in India for a bit.” Did he see himself on one of those giant advertising hoardings featuring cricketers now found on Indian streets? “It would be nice to get me and my brother up there, two very good looking men.”

Bailey century sets up impressive win

George Bailey played the quintessential captain’s innings, scoring an impressive, unbeaten 160, to guide Tasmania to their improbable fourth-innings target of 315 against Victoria at the Bellerive Oval

Resuming at 1 for 1, Tasmania lost opener Nick Kruger with only 21 on the board. Bailey walked out to join Alex Doolan, and the pair set about stemming the rot with a determined stand. They remained together for a ball short of 34 overs, and added 112 runs to take the sting out of Victoria’s bowling, before Peter Siddle got Doolan to edge behind for 54.Mark Cosgrove could not contribute much to the cause, and perished for 12 to give Victoria a chance to target the lower middle order. Travis Birt scored 26, adding 47 with Bailey before Jon Holland trapped him in front, with Tasmania 106 short of the target with five wickets remaining. Things seemed set for a tight finish, but Bailey shut the door on Victoria with an emphatic array of strokes. He waded into the Victoria attack, hitting 18 boundaries in his innings, that spanned 235 balls. James Faulkner steadied his end, with an unbeaten 47 off 77 balls, and the pair finished the game in the 91st over of the day.

Mohammad Nabi named Afghanistan captain

Allrounder Mohammad Nabi has been named Afghanistan captain, replacing batsman Nawroz Mangal

Ibrahim Momand07-Nov-2010

Mohammad Nabi takes over as Afghanistan captain•International Cricket Council

Allrounder Mohammad Nabi has been named Afghanistan captain, replacing batsman Nawroz Mangal, under whose leadership the national team gained ODI status in the 2009 World Cup Qualifiers and qualified for the 2010 World Twenty20. Mangal was under pressure following Afghanistan’s series defeat at the hands of Kenya in October and his own performances have been disappointing, with four successive scores of under ten. Mangal, who took over as captain in 2007, has been retained in Afghanistan’s 14-man squad for the Asian Games which will be held in Guangzhou in China later this month.Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Hamid Shinwari said Mangal had brought the team a long way to reach their present standing but he had yet to lead the team to an ODI series win. “We have played 16 one-day internationals but we could only win nine therefore we thought the burden of captaincy is too heavy on Nawroz and Nabi is the next best choice.”Shinwari said Nabi was preferred because “he is most talented and a quick learner who remained as vice-captain under Nawroz and played more games than any other in the team.” Nabi has also played for the MCC in England and the Pakistan Customs team.Shinwari added the decision was made only after consultation with technical and selection committees, Afghanistan coach Rashid Latif and Nabi himself, and all parties agreed.Team manager Nazijar Abdul Rahimzai said the change in leadership was unlikely to affect Afghanistan’s preparations for the Asian Games. “They [Mangal and Nabi] are still close friends and every player is participating regularly in the training.”A dissenting voice is former national captain, Raees Ahmadzai, who questioned the motive and the timing for the change. “It was based on personal affairs – the selection committee is not independent,” Ahmadzai said. The ACB dismissed those claims as “baseless.” Ahmadzai added “the timing doesn’t have any logic while we are preparing for the Asian Games – Nawroz was doing well and it will not be easy to adjust the team with Mohammad Nabi until after the Games.”
