Morne Morkel 'too good' as Surrey close in on Championship pennant

A spell of five wickets in 38 balls from Morne Morkel either side of tea saw the Division One leaders roar back into contention against bottom side Worcestershire

Jon Culley at New Road12-Sep-2018Surrey 268 (Burns 122) and 70 for 0 need a further 202 to beat Worcestershire 336 and 203 (Fell 89)
ScorecardAfter such a season of dominance, this may have been the last place Surrey would have expected to find themselves in a fight, so it is a great credit to Worcestershire that if they are to leave here with a ninth straight win and the title in their pockets they will have earned it.Home supporters were grumbling, having seen Worcestershire’s last eight wickets fall for 49 – five of them to the redoubtable Morne Morkel – but it still left Surrey needing 272 to win. No other team has required Surrey to chase as many fourth-innings runs this season. Having left The Oval with a draw in May, Worcestershire can therefore see themselves as having been their toughest opponents.Goodness knows, Worcestershire might yet win the game, which would set off some tremors of anxiety among the others fighting to avoid relegation. It is probably unlikely, frankly, with Surrey 70 without loss overnight, and for all Ben Twohig’s promise, Worcestershire would fancy themselves rather more with a Ravi Ashwin or a Moeen Ali to exploit a turning pitch. But there is still time for a twist or two yet.Surrey’s task task would have been somewhat easier but for Tom Fell, who supplemented his first-innings 69, which he had made in the most difficult conditions of the match, with another gutsy performance, making 89. He shared an opening partnership of 65 with Daryl Mitchell and enjoyed some strong support again from the debutant Ollie Westbury.Fell has not made a first-class hundred for more than three years, a period in which he has undergone treatment for testicular cancer, and for that reason alone the home crowd were willing him to find those 11 more runs.Morkel did for all their hopes, unfortunately. Surrey may be the team of homegrown talent but the South African has been a major component of the title-chasing machine. In eight matches, he has 50 wickets, a landmark he reached with a brilliant spell of controlled fast bowling in the pleasant afternoon sunshine that yielded his fourth five-wicket haul for the county. All five came within the space of 38 deliveries either side of tea, Fell falling to what became the last ball of the afternoon session when Morkel bowled a beauty to clip the top of off-stump, having found the edge of Alex Milton’s bat in the previous over.Ross Whiteley, Ed Barnard and Wayne Parnell followed in swift order after tea, all pretty much beaten for pace. “He bowled brilliantly and showed why he has been such a fantastic bowler over the past 10 or 15 years,” Fell said. “He was a bit too good for us unfortunately and probably changed the game.”Morne Morkel reached 50 wickets in a hugely successful first season•Getty ImagesAmar Virdi exploited the turn in the pitch with 3 for 73 and Worcestershire’s 203 all out was a disappointment, having been 154 for 2. Last-day runs are often the hardest, though, and although Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman came through 20 overs with their wickets intact and the target down to just over 200, a good morning for Worcestershire could make for a tense afternoon and batting on this surface is not straightforward, as Burns discovered on 3 when he inside-edged a ball from Parnell that narrowly missed his leg stump.Worcestershire had the upper hand on the third morning, after all, as Surrey’s plan to add a couple more batting points to their overnight position yielded only one as their last four wickets fell for 55.Burns built on his fourth hundred of the season but not by as much as he would have liked, miscuing a pull to be caught at mid-on when he had reached 122. His was the ninth wicket to fall after Ben Foakes, coming in at No. 9 after feeling ill on Tuesday, had been caught at gully for 13. Foakes, still poorly, was off the field thereafter, Ollie Pope keeping wicket.Worcestershire have their fitness worries too. Joe Clarke has struggled with back spasms, adding to Worcestershire’s worries ahead of Vitality Blast Finals Day on Saturday. They are already without Martin Guptill, who made a major contribution to their success in the early part of the competition, after a hamstring injury forced the New Zealander to cancel his projected return. Brett D’Oliveira has missed this match, also with a back problem.Parnell will play despite splitting the webbing on his right hand and Ben Cox will return after being dropped from this match. Nottinghamshire have cleared Luke Wood to play on loan, as he did in the group stage, and Moeen Ali is available.

CONFIRA A CLASSIFICAÇÃO DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

O Botafogo incomodava o Red Bull Bragantino.

Spurs: Ange could unleash dream Veliz partner in 19 y/o "handful"

It is quite remarkable how quickly things can change in football, and those affiliated with Tottenham Hotspur will only be too happy to delineate the club's emphatic turnaround.

Manager Ange Postecoglou is the architect of the revolution, having transformed a suffering outfit that finished eighth in the Premier League last season but now look set for an exciting campaign fighting against the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table.

Tottenham are perched in first-place in the English top flight after eight games, and while there is a very long road ahead, the signs of newfound, lasting positivity are there for all to see.

The results on the pitch have been emphatic but are simply a product of the astute transfer work plied over the summer, and while the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have captured the awe, prospects such as Alejo Veliz hold potential enough to cement a starring role on English shores in the near future.

How is Alejo Veliz getting on at Tottenham?

Signed from Argentinian side Rosario Central for around £13m in August, Veliz is a 20-year-old centre-forward with a natural inclination for aerial dominance.

Last year, the sharpshooter posted 11 goals and two assists from just 23 games, with talent scout Jacek Kulig touting him as the "complete" striker.

And while he has only made two fleeting substitute displays for the Lilywhites thus far,the youngster is acclimatising to life in Europe and will see a rise in importance as the season progresses.

His former coach, Adrian Dezotti, said this of his faculties: “Alejo is really intelligent but also very cunning, mischievous. He has a lot of tricks up his sleeve, a lot of street smarts. He’s a strategist, a quick thinker."

The 6 foot 1, physical forward offers a range of tools but has earned early acclaim for his "incredible" and "fearsome" prowess in the air, drifting above the clouds to latch onto balls out of reach for the lion's share – winning 4.95 aerial duels per game over the past year (FBref).

Alejo Veliz

He is a distinctive, focal frontman, the kind of striker that gets the footballing traditionalists all starry-eyed and wobbly-kneed. A man of prodigious potential and a dream for creative peers.

He might not even be the biggest talent at Spurs' disposal though, with Jude Soonsup-Bell dazzling at youth level this season and looking to rival his South American counterpart for a place in his senior manager's plans.

Who is Jude Soonsup-Bell?

Despite impressing within the prestigious Cobham Academy, Soonsup-Bell joined Tottenham on a free transfer in January as he approached the culmination of his contract with Chelsea and had not been offered fresh terms.

The Blues have instated a sell-on clause but deemed the precocious hopeful unlikely to wedge his way into the first team with such congested youth ranks.

Now, however, the 19-year-old is comfortably ensconced in Tottenham's U21 team, having started the 2023/24 campaign in stunning form, very much knocking on Postecoglou's door should his early-season feats be sustained.

Spurs fought off competition from the likes of Manchester City to secure his services, and now look to be reaping the rewards, boasting a prodigy to partner someone of Veliz's ilk up front.

The pairing are not the only offensive aces with high ceilings but illustrate the incredible development across the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the outfit very much on the up and improving from the pitch to the training ground to the very air of the dressing room.

It's worth noting that the teenage talent most prolific spell to date, during the 2020/21 season, was played at U18 level, with the subsequent campaigns underscoring the improvements made to date – indeed crescendoing in his thunderous present purple patch.

And while Tottenham boast one of the richest youth ranks across all of Europe, Soonsup-Bell's multi-faceted qualities put him right at the top of the pecking order, with a senior debut under Postecoglou surely not too far away.

What is Jude Soonsup-Bell's style of play?

Soonsup-Bell is a talented forward and one who has successfully been shifted across positions during the maiden phase of his career, and while this vortex of instability could derail the progress of some, he has used it to impressively develop different aspects of his game.

Such is corroborated by his older brother, who sang the rising phenom's praises in 2021, highlighting his best attributes that set him in such good stead for a starring role in the Premier League in the future.

He said: "Chelsea saw that he could score goals but contribute more to mould him quickly into a centre forward.

"He is athletic, as a No.9 should be, and he is quite tall and quick. But, for me, his best attribute is his intelligence both on and off the ball. He has the brain for the sport, with composure on the ball.

Chelsea's loss is Tottenham's gain, and while the Blues appear to have failed to learn from past mistakes – letting the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah depart as prospects before they bloomed – Postecoglou would love nothing more than to use Soonsup-Bell as a reminder of what could have been.

Salah, in particular, is a relevant case, with the Egpytian among the most clinical forwards in the world and boasting a technical prowess unrivalled aside from the select few in the pantheon of modern greats.

This season alone, the 31-year-old has already plundered six goals and four assists from ten outings, heralded as world-class" by pundit and colour commentator Gary Neville.

The Liverpool star's electric pace, adroit mobility and intellect in decisive passages blend to create a special threat, and one that Soonsup-Bell is showing signs of emulating.

This season, having scored six times and provided two assists, he's boasting the kind of balance that truly can entrap opponents, having fluctuated between a central striking role and a position on the right wing.

jude-soonsup-bell-tottenham-hotspur-academy

A real “handful” for defenders, as was said by football.london's Alasdair Gold, the Spurs starlet is not a carbon copy of Salah but definitely offers similar characteristics, and the evidence is there that he could be moulded into a phenom with a razor-sharp cutting edge.

If Veliz and Soonsup-Bell are provided with the license to build a strike partnership over the coming months and years, the Premier League might be in line for a new force to be reckoned.

With the Argentine's 'fearsome' aerial ability and the former Chelsea youngster's destructive, dynamic threat, the eager Spurs support could rest assured with the knowledge that the future is in safe hands – a future that will sustain this new position of strength.

Arsenal: Martin Odegaard’s goals record & stats vs Everton

Martin Odegaard was seen as the next big thing in world football when European giants Real Madrid signed the then-16-year-old for £2m in 2015.

However, after a number of years that saw very few starts and several loan moves, there was a general belief that the youngster was perhaps just another in a long line of failed wonderkids. That was until Arsenal took him on loan in 2021.

Following a successful stint in north London, the Gunners made the move permanent that summer for just £35m, and Odegaard has been slowly fulfilling the potential so many thought he once had ever since.

That said, he has had contrasting experiences when coming up against Everton in the Premier League.

And with Arsenal once again about to make the trip up north, Football FanCast has taken a look at the Norwegian's record against the Toffees, as well as his general record since first donning the famous red and white of Arsenal.

What is Martin Odegaard's record against Everton?

Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin in action with Arsenal's Martin Odegaard.

Odegaard has only been an Arsenal player since January 2021, and has therefore only played against the Toffees on a grand total of five occasions so far, having never faced them outside the Premier League.

In those five games, he has appeared on the scoresheet three times.

In his first game against the Merseysiders in April 2021, he lasted just 74 minutes, coming off the pitch with no goal or assist to his name – something he would remedy the next time out.

The Norway captain played the full 90 in the game at Goodison Park in December of the same year and scored from a driven left-footed shot in the 45th minute.

He would score another goal in the reverse fixture, again with his left foot, only this time, he would be captain of the club.

Odegaard blanked once again in the first game against Everton last season, before redeeming himself and his team somewhat with another goal in March of this year, this time from a right-footed strike.

In all, three goals in five games for a midfielder is certainly good going from the young leader. However, the team's performances have not quite matched up to his when it comes to playing Everton.

What is Martin Odegaard's head-to-head record against Everton?

Despite his impressive individual performances against the Toffees since he arrived in England, Odegaard has found himself on the losing side in games against the Merseysiders more often than not.

In the five games since his introduction as an Arsenal player, he has won just twice against them, losing on the other three occasions. Considering the levels Everton have found themselves at in recent years, that is rather poor from the Gunners.

Possibly the worst performance of the lot came in February of this year when the newly appointed Sean Dyche appeared to completely school the north Londoners, with Amadou Onana, in particular, dominating the centre of the park.

Whilst the loss didn't remove Mikel Arteta's men from top spot at the time, it certainly damaged their title credentials.

While Odegaard has found himself on the losing side of things more than he'd like against Everton, when Arsenal have won, they've done so in style.

In May 2022, the Gunners played Frank Lampard's side on the final day of the season and smashed them 5-1 – although with safety already secured, it's hard to draw any real conclusions from Everton's performance that day.

It was a similar scoreline in March of this year, with the Gunners running out 4-0 victors at home, seemingly exercising the demons from their 1-0 loss just a few weeks before.

What is Martin Odegaard's Premier League record?

martin-odegaard-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-jeremy-doku

At the time of writing, Odegaard has already played 91 games in the Premier League for the Gunners and has become one of the first names on the teamsheet for Arteta – especially since becoming club captain.

In those 91 appearances, the midfield dynamo has managed to rack up a seriously impressive 39 goal involvements.

Interestingly, the 24-year-old has actually scored more goals than he has provided assists so far in his Arsenal career, finding the back of the net 25 times while providing for his teammates 14 times.

That said, he has just come off of a fantastic scoring season, in which he got himself on the scoresheet 15 times across his 37 appearances – more than double the seven goals he scored in the 2021/22 campaign.

With his output improving year after year and the players around him getting better amid the Gunners' runners-up finish last term, don't bet against him scoring even more this season.

What is Martin Odegaard's overall Arsenal record?

martin-odegaard-arsenal

Whilst the bulk of his output has come in the Premier League, Odegaard has also been an effective tool for Arteta in other competitions. Since making the switch to north London, he has played in 13 Europa League games for the club and scored one goal in the process.

In fact, it was against Greek outfit Olympiacos in March 2021 that the then-22-year-old opened his Arsenal account with an outrageous thunderbolt that clattered off the underside of the crossbar.

The Norwegian wizard has also added one more assist to his tally in the EFL Cup, but is yet to produce a goal involvement in the FA Cup.

Who has Martin Odegaard scored against the most?

Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard celebrating for Arsenal.

The team that the Norwegian gem has scored the most against is, in fact, Everton – with those three goals the most he has scored against a single opponent in all competitions.

After the Toffees, the English sides that Odegaard has scored most often against are bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton, Wolves, Fulham and Bournemouth.

The two goals against Spurs and the Blues demonstrate that he can and often does shine in the biggest games for the club and are perhaps part of the reason he was chosen to be the captain of the side.

Who has Martin Odegaard got the most assists against?

martin-odegaard-arsenal-emile-smith-rowe

While we're sure that Arteta and the Arsenal faithful love Odegaard for his goalscoring ability and contributions, it's easy to forget that his primary job as the side's chief creator is to create as many opportunities as he can for his side and to rack up as many assists as possible.

However, despite creating 76 chances in the league last year – the fifth-highest tally – he ended the season with just seven assists, the same number as Granit Xhaka.

That said, Leeds United are the side that have suffered from the brunt of his creativity in league play, with the Norwegian providing three assists when playing against the West Yorkshire side.

Following the Peacocks, West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion have been on the receiving end of his assists most often, with Odegaard providing two against both sides.

What is Arsenal's record against Everton?

Neither Arsenal nor Everton have ever been relegated from the Premier League, and so it's not all the surprising to see that in the years since their first meeting back in April 1905, the two sides have played each other a whopping 221 times across all competitions.

Whilst there have been periods of dominance for both sides and periods in which there was little to separate them, the Gunners have had the overall edge over their Merseyside opponents, winning 110 matches between the sides – almost double Everton's 65.

What are Arsenal's recent results against Everton?

For all their dominance over the years, recent results against Everton have been a real mixed bag for the Gunners, to say the least, with some seriously impressive wins and some calamitous losses as well.

In the last ten meetings between the sides, the Gunners have come out victorious on five occasions, which would probably be deemed a reasonably successful outcome if it weren't for the fact that the Toffees have been something of a circus in recent seasons.

Even with the threat of relegation looming large, the Merseyside outfit have been able to come away with four wins out of the last ten games, even beating the Gunners at home in April 2021.

And while Arteta's men have recently beaten Dyche's side 4-0, their struggles at Goodison should give the players and fans some confidence that they can once again defy the odds and upset the Gunners.

When is Arsenal vs Everton?

The Gunners will travel north to play Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday 16th September. The match will kick off at 5.30pm (UK time), with Arsenal hoping to improve upon their last couple of visits to their historic ground.

There's a lot on the line for both sides as Arteta's men will look to maintain their pace in the title race, whereas Dyche and co will be looking to earn as many points as they can early this year to avoid another relegation battle come May.

Career is nearly "done and dusted" – Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen has been gradually slipping towards retirement and after suffering defeat in the Melbourne derby he announced when he would end his career

Kevin Pietersen, one of cricket’s most flamboyant and controversial figures, has announced his impending retirement, stating that he expects to call a complete halt to his playing career by the end of the year.Pietersen, 37, revealed his decision after taking part in the Stars’ Big Bash League defeat against the Renegades in the Melbourne derby.”I’m done and dusted, playing days,” he said. “You get to that time in your career when you think ‘do I want this?’ I want it desperately at the moment … but I don’t think I will want it in 10 months’ time. I just don’t see myself wanting to play cricket in December.”Pietersen said he would honour playing commitments with the Pakistan Super League and in his native South Africa, but that would be it.Cricket commentary, an involvement in rhino conservation – he is having a house built near Kruger national park in South Africa – and involvement in cricket coaching are just three areas that have recently attracted his attention.Surrey’s NatWest T20 Blast game against Sussex last season was dedicated to raising more for rhinos, with £1 of every ticket sold going to charity. Regrettably, Pietersen had to miss the game with a calf injury.Pietersen’s move towards retirement began last July when he announced that, for the second successive year, he would not enter the 2018 IPL auction because the tournament had become “too long”. He also suggested that he would no longer play for Surrey in the NatWest Blast and, after much fanfare, only played two matches. He also left the Stars in early season to fly back to the UK for Christmas and celebrate his tenth wedding anniversary, only for frustration to strike on his return journey when his luggage was left in Dubai and he embarrassed Emirates into funding an emergency wardrobe for his TV commentary.Pietersen is England’s second highest run-scorer across all forms of the game combined and England have never entirely replaced him in their Test middle order since he was dropped from the international teams over a dispute over team ethics following their previous disastrous Ashes tour four years ago.Seemingly bound to become one of Twenty20’s most successful players, his star quality has not entirely been backed up by the performances that were expected as injuries – and perhaps a busy lifestyle – began to unsettle him.His T20 appearances have increasingly been characterised by long periods off the field – and Saturday night was no different. He made 40 from 30 balls in the Stars’ 157 for 4 but then remained in the dressing room for what he termed “precautionary” ice treatment on an ankle injury as Renegades won by six wickets with 13 balls to spare. But he has never lost the ability to charm – he has 3.5m followers on Twitter – so it was no surprise that he also expressed wishes to remain with Melbourne in some capacity. “This franchise has been so good for me at the end of my career,” he said. “I love Melbourne. I’ve actually really grown to love Australia and have a really good rapport with a lot of the Australian public.”So to have some sort of involvement in the Stars going forward, because of how much I love this club, would be something of immense value to me.”

New FTP could usher in Big Four era

India will play more than half their cricket against Australia, England and South Africa between the World Cups of 2019 and 2023 if the proposed Future Tours Programme (FTP) – agreed to in principle by the BCCI at its special general meeting (SGM) on Monday – is ratified and signed. They will play fewer Tests and more T20Is, play more of their cricket at home, and will prefer to restrict their southern-hemisphere tours to the new year. The FTP includes no matches against Pakistan outside ICC events, a state of affairs the PCB has challenged. The total workload of the players will reduce, too: according to the BCCI, India will have played 390 days of international cricket plus ICC tournaments in the four-year cycle that ends in 2019, but will only have about 350 match days over the next cycle, including two home ICC events. The SGM has also mandated the office bearers – acting president CK Khanna, acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary and treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry – to nominate a working group that will deal with all the details and intricacies of the FTP, including the Members’ Participation Agreement (MPA). ESPNcricinfo understands the working group will be formed from among the general body. By doing so, the BCCI wishes to retain some control and leverage when it comes to playing arrangements. In the past, India’s participation has been used by the board as a negotiation tool at times, and a diplomacy device at others. While there had been a broad FTP in the past too, each tour needed a final stamp of approval from the participating teams. It is understood the body was not in favour of losing that power.A final approval on the working group will need to be given by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA). The CoA had already given its nod to the broad FTP, prepared by the BCCI operations team led by its CEO Rahul Johri. Representatives from all boards and the ICC met in Singapore on December 7 and 8 to flesh out the FTP.In particular, the operations team has tried to eliminate the imbalance typical of India’s FTPs. They didn’t want a repeat of the 2016-17 home season in which India played 13 Tests, nor did they want another season like 2017-18 in which the only three home Tests they played came against Sri Lanka. The new FTP seeks to eliminate the home-away imbalance: most of India’s cricket since their last overseas cycle has come at home, and almost all of the important cricket they play next year will be overseas. At the press conference, Choudhary and Johri said they were pleased with the proposed FTP. Choudhary said India’s home matches would go up from 51 to 81, which is about a 60% increase, but also said the match days would only increase by 20% – a clear indication of the reduction of Test cricket. India’s tours, as is obvious from the increase in home cricket and reduction in overall playing days, will be fewer and staggered to meet the team management’s demands of not spending long periods away from home. The new FTP will look to some as a continuation of the infamous Big Three, with the addition of South Africa to a lesser degree, but that, according to those present at the meeting, was also a demand of the broadcasters. It has become difficult to market Test cricket that doesn’t involve the four main Test-playing nations. Asked if this was a sign of things to come, if Test cricket was going to be played extensively only among the top four nations, Choudhary said: “Well you can say so. You can say so. But then time is not constant. There will be changes. These are things that will keep happening, and we will have to continue dealing with them.”India’s engagement with other Test teams is likely to be capped to two matches per series, which is the minimum requirement of the ICC Test Championship. If anything, this only formalises what has been apparent for a while. In the cycle between the World Cups of 2011 and 2015, 80 of India’s 166 international matches were against Australia, England and South Africa.Another contest that did not enjoy patronage from the broadcasters was the Champions League T20. It has long been discontinued, but the BCCI has retained the three-week window in September originally meant for the Champions League, which means another T20-related event cannot be ruled out.About securing a fixed home season, Choudahry said: “Traditionally speaking our season begins in October and goes on till March. While we were negotiating and preparing for the FTP conferences, we made certain assumptions. One of them was that it was a long season so let’s qualitatively assign them into two parts.”We decided October, November and December are our primary season. And January, February and March are our secondary season. The reasons mostly being the fact that you will attract more home crowd and there will be more certainty of matches in the first three months than the next three. The next three months, half of India will have other difficulties.”We have tried to make sure that our home matches fall in our primary home season firstly, and otherwise secondary. We know that the seasons of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand will clash with ours, and we will tour them but will prefer to do so in January, February and March.”

Blast attendances up to record 883,000

This season’s NatWest Blast has set new records for ticket sales, with official attendance rising to 883,000 overall

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Sep-2017This season’s NatWest Blast has set new records for ticket sales, with official attendance rising to 883,000 overall. Finals Day at Edgbaston is also a record sellout, while average attendances among the 18 counties were up to 7500.The return of the competition to a block in July and August – as well as soaring run rates – seems to have helped the Blast’s growth, despite poor weather causing 16 matches to be abandoned. Taking into account those through the turnstiles to watch the Kia Super League, 907,000 tickets had been sold for domestic T20, before the women’s Finals Day at Hove on Friday. The 2017 Blast figures were a 7% rise on the previous record, set in 2015 when the competition was played largely on Friday nights from May through to August. Last year saw a slight drop in attendances, partly down to poor weather.”It’s a genuine pleasure to be able to congratulate all 18 first-class counties for their outstanding efforts in making the 2017 Blast such a hit,” Gordon Hollins, the ECB’s chief operating officer, said.”The competition moved to a new place in the schedule this year, with all games played in a block in July and August rather than spread through the summer. That was welcomed by the players and has helped draw the crowds to NatWest T20 Blast – in bigger numbers then ever before.”The change created some fresh challenges for counties alongside the new opportunities but the record advance sales show how well the game has responded – the counties deserve huge credit. The quality of the cricket has been very clear too, with further records set for runs scored and sixes hit – our thanks to the players for producing such entertaining games.Blast Finals Day, in front of 24,426 people at Edgbaston on Saturday, will see Hampshire, Glamorgan, Nottinghamshire and Birmingham compete to the lift the trophy. From 2020, the ECB is set to introduce a new, 38-game T20 tournament, featuring eight regional/city-based team. The NatWest Blast is planned to continue as a secondary competition for all 18 counties to contest.
