Ashes batting practice turns exercise in self-harm as Aussie seamers run riot

In their quest to avoid batting humiliation in the Ashes, Australia inadvertently staged a re-enactment of Trent Bridge and Edgbaston 2015

Daniel Brettig at the Ageas Bowl23-Jul-2019Hick XII 96 for 7 (Cummins 3-15, Siddle 3-20) trail Haddin XII 105 (Labuschagne 41, Neser 4-18, Bird 3-25) by nine runsIn their quest to avoid a repeat of the batting humiliations in Birmingham and Nottingham four years ago that led to the loss of the Ashes, it cannot have been in Australia’s warm-up plans to stage such a faithful re-enactment.Requesting a seaming, bouncing surface as part of a training camp deal brokered directly between Cricket Australia and the Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove always left open the possibility of a rush of wickets when the Dukes ball did as expected. Not only was the pitch well grassed on top it was dry underneath, meaning there was variable bounce on offer as well as seam. But to see the “Haddin XII” shot out for 105, by an attack featuring only James Pattinson among the pace bowlers expected to form the front rank of Australia’s attack for the Ashes, was cause for at least slightly furrowed brows for the head coach Justin Langer and his support staff. By stumps the “Hick XII” had fared little better, limping to 96 for 7, for a combined tally of 201 for 17 across a most eventful day.Compounding the diversion from likely plans was the fact that the only member of the Haddin XII top seven to reach double figures was Marnus Labuschagne, who demonstrated typical grit and thought in scrounging his way to 41 with the help of the good fortune required to survive on a pitch this lively. Labuschagne is, at best, vying for one of the last couple of spots in the squad, whereas David Warner (four), Marcus Harris (six), Travis Head (one), Kurtis Patterson (two) and Alex Carey (six) are all more probable to figure.Equally, the new-ball spell of Pattinson turned plenty of heads but went wicketless, while Michael Neser and Jackson Bird struck frequently with a combination of swing, seam, bounce and pace from unerring lines. They were helped, too, by some inattentive shots – Warner was too early into his drive and Head too rash in throwing the bat at an angled ball, tendencies both will want to avoid during the Ashes proper. When the Hick XII took their turn to bat, the heavy roller and 31C temperatures had served to calm the surface somewhat, allowing Joe Burns and Cameron Bancroft to gain a foothold.Their dismissals to Peter Siddle and Pat Cummins cleared the way for Steven Smith to get briefly re-acquainted with red-ball combat, before Matthew Wade was given caught behind and made clear he was far from happy with the decision. Pete Handscomb and Tim Paine also stayed only momentarily, before Mitchell Marsh departed in the day’s final over. Cummins and Siddle had plenty of reason to be pleased with their work.Quirks abounded in this fixture, not taking first-class status but also constituting far more strenuous preparation than the equivalent county games at Canterbury and Chelmsford in 2015. Twelve players a side, with 10 wickets completing an innings, 96 overs to be bowled in the day and the pitch located to the eastern edge of the square. Upon winning the toss, Paine was more than happy to bowl first, consigning Head’s team to the sorts of conditions that have undone Australians in England so many times before.Pattinson wasted little time making his mark, striking Warner in the chest with a rising first delivery, and moving the ball at pace while also extracting steepling bounce. It was Neser, however, who coaxed Warner into the drive, pinned Harris lbw with a ball straightening down the line of the stumps, and later returned to defeat Mitchell Starc and Cummins, the latter’s off stump plucked out by late movement away.Bird also fared well, tempting out Head and winning lbw verdicts against Patterson and Carey. Through it all Labuschagne offered a deferential defensive blade, salting away his runs with furtive deflections and the occasional boundary in a stay that, at 81 balls, lasted longer than the collective stays of the rest of the top five combined. He has done his Ashes chances no harm whatsoever.Another question confronting Langer and the selection chairman Trevor Hohns is whether Starc’s speed will be as dangerous in the Ashes as it was for most of the World Cup. He took the new ball for Head, and was certainly fast, at one point stinging Burns on the gloves. But the more dangerous trajectories looked clearly to be those of Siddle, who ended a 38-run opening stand between Burns and Bancroft, and Cummins, who found a scorcher for Bancroft and then beat Wade numerous times.Smith offered up a pair of delectable boundaries through midwicket and cover, but dragged a full ball from Cummins onto the stumps when trying to repeat the dose. Wade’s exit was no more graceful, seeming to suggest that a ball from Hazlewood had struck arm rather than bat or glove. Less doubt surrounded Handscomb’s lbw, stuck on the crease to Cummins, or Paine’s glance down the leg side into the gloves of his back-up Carey.A late pressure release arrived via some loose stuff from Starc, only for Marsh to be bowled by Siddle in the day’s final over. Given all that had gone before, this was only fitting.

Liverpool in talks for "exquisite" £34m whiz who could hinder Elliott

Liverpool are in quite the commanding position this season after putting the malaise of the 2022/23 campaign to bed, Jurgen Klopp enforcing sweeping changes to the midfield to charge the title-chasing endeavours.

Sitting pretty in first place in the Premier League, holding the advantage over Fulham after the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie and having advanced in the FA Cup and Europa League, there is a growing sense that the Reds could engineer something special this year.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Last summer's transfer activity was indeed crucial but has meant that heavy spending this month just isn't feasible, though that's not to say that plans aren't being drawn up in preparation for business at the end of the term.

Liverpool transfer targets – summer

According to Calciomercato over in Italy, Liverpool are interested in Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Heoriy Sudakov and have already held discussions to determine the possibility of a transfer.

Liverpool could sign Van Dijk's new Gomez in "incredibly fast" £13m titan

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 19, 2024

Barcelona, Napoli and Juventus are all named as suitors though Liverpool will be confident that their financial strength is enough to get this one over the line in the summer, with his Ukrainian outfit demanding a ballpark figure of €40m (£34m) for his departure.

Heoriy Sudakov's style of play

Named as Shakhtar's Player of the Year in 2023, Sudakov, aged just 21, is fast establishing himself as one of Europe's most exciting rising stars, having now chalked up 85 senior appearances for his club and clinched 13 goals and 13 assists apiece after graduating from the academy.

This season, as per Sofascore, Sudakov has played ten times in the Ukrainian Premier League and has completed 86% of his passes, averaging 1.6 key passes, 1.5 interceptions, 3.6 ball recoveries and 3.1 dribbles per match.

Lauded for his "exquisite" technical prowess and creativity by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Sudakov would offer a range of qualities for Klopp's side and no doubt has the potential to make a solid career on English shores.

As per FBref, the versatile midfielder ranks among the top 20% of positional peers for shot-creating actions and the top 21% for progressive carries per 90, likened to Premier League players such as Aston Villa's John McGinn – who has been hailed for his "monstrous" performances by The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell – for his high-energy approach and penetrative presence.

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Georgiy Sudakov.

However, given that he would cost a relatively large amount, there is a question about whether signing him would be the most prudent venture given the need for reinforcements across other areas.

Moreover, he stylistically matches up to Harvey Elliott across numerous facets and adding him to the ranks may have a negative effect on the influential England U21 international, who has earned acclaim for his efforts this term.

Elliott, aged 20, has featured prominently in Liverpool's cup competitions this season while largely sitting on the fringes in the Premier League, and while the £40k-per-week dynamo has impressed he has voiced concerns over his role as a 'super sub'.

Given Sudakov's creativity and progression are among his standout attributes, there's no need to further negotiations for his signature, with Elliott ranking among the top 9% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for progressive passes and the top 4% for progressive carries per 90.

As such, Liverpool's transfer kitty is best applied elsewhere come the end of the campaign, with Elliott undoubtedly one of the most exciting playmaking talents in the business right now.

Sunderland also eye move for Championship "monster" alongside Kieffer Moore

Sunderland reportedly have another attacking target on their list in a "fast" Championship star, according to one reliable journalist.

Sunderland targeting new striker

The Black Cats appear to be searching the market for a new striker this month and Michael Beale is hoping to “excite” supporters with one or two additions.

“We have a clear idea on one or two of the areas we would like to strengthen this month, if we can. It’s never an easy month, but we are certainly going to try and do something to strengthen and boost the squad, and to hopefully excite the fans. Those discussions are going on in the background. This (derby) game has been a bit of a distraction, if I’m honest, but those discussions were happening even (Tuesday) morning and late on in the afternoon.”

Winger Jack Clarke has been the main source of goals this season, netting eight more goals than any other Sunderland player. (Sunderland top scorers – BBC) However, Clarke, due to his fine form, has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with West Ham believed to be exploring a potential transfer.

Even if the Sunderland star remains at the Stadium of Light, a new forward appears to be on the agenda, and Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore is on the list of targets.

Recent reports have claimed Sunderland are in pole position to sign the Wales international ahead of a number of other Championship sides, and a new update has emerged including the name of a new attacking target.

Sunderland eyeing Sam Gallagher move

According to The Northern Echo’s chief reporter Scott Wilson, Sunderland have held preliminary talks with Bournemouth for Moore and are waiting to hear the final decision. However, the reliable reporter added that the club’s recruitment team, led by sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, also have Sam Gallagher of Blackburn Rovers on their transfer wishlist.

Gallagher, who can play anywhere across the front three, completed a permanent move to Blackburn in 2019 after a previous loan spell and has been a regular at Ewood Park ever since.

The 28-year-old has plenty of experience in the Championship, mostly with Rovers, so could be a shrewd addition, potentially alongside Moore to rival the likes of centre-forward options Nazariy Rusyn and youngsters Mason Burstow, Eliezer Mayenda and Luis Semedo.

Former Blackburn and Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray is also a big fan of Gallagher, describing him as a “monster” back in 2022.

“I don’t know how many appearances he (Gallagher) has made but I think his goals per starts is pretty good. He’s missed a fair whack of the season. He scored tonight with his right foot. I’m always encouraging him to hit it because when you watch it in training it’s like a bazooka, his right foot. It’s a great strike.

“Gallagher is fast, strong, good in the air, rocket in his right foot. He has all the attributes to be a top player. His ambition has to be to get to the Premier League, hopefully with this club, but if not, the Premier League look at this monster of a boy who can run like the wind with a rocket in his boots, why can’t he play in the Premier League?”

Spurs swoop for £100m “monster” could help Richarlison explode

Same old Tottenham Hotspur. That was the hackneyed phrase that was thrown about when managerless Spurs concluded a 2022/23 campaign that had resulted in the dismissal of Antonio Conte in March – the fourth sacking in as many years – and presaged the summer sale of Harry Kane.

An eighth-placed Premier League finish meant that the current campaign would be spent on English shores, but Ange Postecoglou was appointed from Celtic to pump life back into a proud outfit searching for success.

Spurs could sign Kulusevski clone with move for "special" £21m gem

Kane was sold but Tottenham spent wisely during the summer transfer market to plant the seeds for an exciting campaign, and while a five-match winless run has halted the revolution, Postecoglou is building something in London and will now look to sign a new talisman to continue the rebuild.

Tottenham transfer news – Ivan Toney

According to a report from the Mirror last week, Tottenham are interested in signing a wealth of players this winter, with Brentford striker Ivan Toney among the options for transfer.

Toney, a one-cap England international, has been suspended since May after breaching FA betting rules and remains ineligible for selection until January 23rd, 2024.

The Mirror reveal that while Postecoglou is desperate to strengthen his backline, Tottenham remain in the running for Toney, with London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal also eager to complete a deal after the new year.

While sources suggest that Toney will remain at the Gtech Community Stadium until the end of the season, Brentford manager Thomas Frank is actually open for discussions, however, he has given the 27-year-old a staggering £100m price tag as per Sky Sports.

Ivan Toney's style of play

Kane might have been sold to Bayern Munich in August but Heung-min Son – appointed club captain this year – has excelled in an unnatural striker's role, scoring ten goals and supplying four assists across 16 appearances this term, mostly as the focal frontman.

But he is a left winger, and while Son's dynamism allows him to find success wherever he is placed across the frontline, Postecoglou will need to sign an out-and-out forward, and Toney could be the man, having been said to be "like Harry Kane" by England teammate Declan Rice.

Not just a goalscorer, the £36k-per-week star ranks among the top 22% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive passes, the top 6% for interceptions and the top 17% for aerial duels per 90, as per FBref.

Said to have the "mindset of a lion" by his manager, who has also called him a "monster" of a player, Toney is tenacious and indeed ravenous for goals, something that has certainly been reflected in his exploits over the past several years, having emerged as a deadly option for Brentford as they have risen to the fore of English football under Frank's guidance.

Ivan Toney's Premier League stats

Toney has been immense for Brentford over the past years, and after scoring 31 times in the 2021/22 campaign to send his side to the top tier of English football, he bagged 12 goals from 32 outings in his Premier League term.

Last season, Toney was utterly sensational as he led the line for the buzzing Bees, plundering 20 goals from 33 Premier League matches and creating 12 big chances for his teammates.

Perhaps it would be wise to put that in perspective: last term, Kane created 14 big chances in the Premier League – he pips Toney, sure, but how many strikers can go punch for punch with Kane's creativity?

While he only completed 62% of his passes (which is admittedly not great) this was largely due to his unyielding urge to influence the play and make things happen.

How Ivan Toney could help Richarlison

Having been noted for his "unique" style by Frank – who appears to have a constant stream of superlatives when discussing his star striker – Toney offers something different and could be the perfect player to serve as the arrowhead in Postecoglou's system.

The confluence of style with Son could be something wonderful, with the South Korean boasting the whole gamut of attacking skills that would allow him to supplement the prospective recruit with constancy, and vice versa.

But perhaps the acquisition of Toney could also bring the very best out of Richarlison, who has been struggling to make his mark down the N17 but did leave an impression one week ago against Newcastle, scoring either side of half-time to play a pivotal role in his outfit's return to the win column.

yago-santiago-maddison-richarlison-tottenham-opinion

Signing for the Lilywhites from Everton for £60m in 2022, the Brazilian forward failed to impress and only netted one league goal all season, though he has improved since the summer and has posted four goals and three assists from just nine starts in the Premier League this year.

While Richarlison is displaying signs of improvement, he could take his game to the next level with a partner such as Toney beside him, a counterweight of sorts, providing a multi-faceted approach that would leave the 26-year-old well-placed to start building that goal tally.

The Brazilian ranks among the top 8% of positional peers for assists, the top 21% for progressive carries, the top 5% for tackles and the top 5% for interceptions per 90, showcasing the creative spark and defensive application that has prompted Postecoglou to keep the faith in him thus far.

Described as a "fighter" by former Spurs director Fabio Paratici, Richarlison's shown himself to be a pretty reliable source of supplementation this season; the hope is that he now builds on his recent performances and finally starts living up to that lofty price tag.

With Toney alongside him and providing him with competition for a starting berth, Richarlison will receive the fuel he needs to take his game to the next level.

Clement must bench Davies for Rangers titan who won 86% duels vs Livi

Philippe Clement has enjoyed a dream start at Glasgow Rangers, but he must not get carried away just yet and keep his players grounded.

The Ibrox side have an excellent chance of winning their first trophy since May 2022 when they face Aberdeen in the League Cup final next month, while progress in Europe looks attainable.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, the Belgian may be able to delve into the market and sign a couple of players who could freshen up the squad while ditching a few who don’t seem to have a future at the club.

Ben Davies is a key example, and could he find himself moving away from Ibrox in the coming months?

Ben Davies’ season in numbers

The Englishman has been a regular in the Europa League, starting all four matches so far, yet he ranks 15th across the squad for interceptions per game (0.3) and seventh for possession lost per game (11.5), which suggests he hasn’t quite been at the races.

Domestically, Davies has started only four times in the Premiership so far, with the Gers conceding four goals across those matches.

For large spells during the summer, it appeared as though the former Liverpool centre-back was ready to leave the club, with Stoke City rumoured to be eyeing a swoop for him.

Nothing materialised, however, and he remains in Glasgow, until January at least. Clement must surely utilise the services of Leon Balogun on a more regular basis, especially judging by his displays under the Belgian.

Leon Balogun has impressed recently

While the decision to re-sign Balogun during the summer wasn’t exactly met with choruses of applause by the Ibrox faithful, his spell in Scotland between 2020 and 2022 was impressive.

Under the former QPR boss, however, he made just two appearances, in games that the Light Blues both won and it seemed as though his backup stature was working.

Rangers defender Leon Balogun.

Under the 49-year-old, however, Balogun has started three of his first seven matches and performed admirably, especially against Livingston on the weekend.

The 35-year-old was a titan at the heart of the defence alongside Connor Goldson as he won all four of his ground duels along with nine out of his 11 aerial duels – working out as 86% of his total duels won – and the Livi forwards just couldn’t find a way past him.

The Nigerian wasn’t even dribbled past during the tie and made three interceptions, two tackles and four clearances in what was a commanding performance at a ground in which the club have occasionally struggled on in the past.

While not a long-term option for Clement, Balogun’s class has shone through over the last month or so and it's clear that the club have been better defensively in the games that he has started.

Rangers have yet to concede a goal from open play across Balogun’s five appearances thus far and this could make Clement’s decision on who should partner Goldson at the back slightly easier.

Davies has sparkled in spells, yet his lack of consistency could lead to him being moved on in the foreseeable future.

Dyche could boldly drop Harrison by unleashing Everton’s "outstanding" gem

Coming into Sean Dyche's first team after starting the season on the sidelines with a hip injury, Jack Harrison has blown hot and cold in an Everton strip to date.

The Leeds United loanee – who could well stay on permanently at Goodison Park if he impresses with the Toffees on a consistent basis – has one goal and two assists from five Blues appearances so far.

The 26-year-old was arguably a candidate for Man of the Match in a recent meeting with AFC Bournemouth, the Toffees' new number 11 delightfully catching Cherries goalkeeper Neto off-guard with an ambitious shot that hit the bar before trailing over the line to make it 2-0 on the day.

Harrison would also be credited with an assist for the game-deciding third strike, the Toffees showing a new-found confidence to easily beat Andoni Iraola's strugglers 3-0.

However, since that standout individual display, the right winger's performances have taken somewhat of a nose-dive with his showing last time out against Brighton and Hove Albion worthy of being left out of the side altogether for the trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace this afternoon.

Jack Harrison's game in numbers vs Brighton

Harrison's 90 minutes up against Roberto De Zerbi's Seagulls saw him snuffed out of the game for the most part by the Brighton backline, the Leeds loanee unable to add to his tally against the visitors at Goodison Park.

Everton were unlucky on their home turf not to pick up all three points regardless of Harrison's below-par afternoon, Ashley Young's late own-goal a kick in the teeth which surrendered a one goal lead for the Toffees and helped Brighton secure a late 1-1 draw.

Harrison was inaccurate with all of his attempted long-balls in this contest, as per Sofascore, killing any Everton momentum in the process by giving Brighton an upper hand with his wayward passing game.

The 26-year-old's game is at its most effective when he's unleashed as a pacey livewire, intercepting a loose pass before launching into an immediate counter-attack – managing an impressive 0.81 interceptions in the last year for his parent club and his current employers per 90, according to FBRef.

Yet, Harrison was ultimately passive against Brighton. The £90k-per-week asset attempted one dribble all afternoon to unlock a stern Seagulls defence, unsuccessful in his efforts however on a day where everything he tried went wrong.

Dyche could well look towards the element of surprise to catch out Palace with his lineup selection as a result, replacing Harrison with exciting youngster Lewis Dobbin and handing the ex-Derby County loanee only his second-ever Premier League start in the process.

Dobbin as Harrison's replacement

Derby County manager Paul Warne described Dobbin as an "outstanding talent" when the now 20-year-old was with the Rams last term, the teen talent at the time scoring five times and assisting a further six goals during a formative year at Pride Park.

Dobbin does, however, predominantly play down the left-hand side when utilised as a winger but he has been known to switch over to the right flank on occasion where Harrison is more comfortable.

At youth level, Everton's number 61 managed to net four of his 14 strikes for the U18s from this unorthodox right-wing spot.

Dyche will hope by starting Dobbin in place of the underperforming Harrison that he can get the best out of his outstanding youngster, heating up competition for starting spots which could see the Leeds loanee up his game on the training pitch to be considered again.
