'League is very competitive, lots of big names playing here' – NYCFC's new marquee signing Nicolás Fernández Mercau ready for MLS challenge

The Argentine player was sold from Elche to City Group for a reported fee close to $10 million

Nicolás Fernández Mercau helped Elche earn promotion back to LaLiga, Spain’s top division. But after 79 matches with the , he opted for the challenge of moving to MLS. It was a record-breaking transfer for the Spanish side, reported to be higher than $8 million, the previous record sale. For Fernández Mercau, the reasons behind the 25-year-old's move are simple.

"The league is very competitive now. There are a lot of big names playing here. Right now, I belong to New York City, and I need to focus on the team and on myself," Nico told GOAL.

In a league featuring stars like Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Wilfried Zaha, Fernández Mercau is aiming to make a name for himself in the league.

"I think I’ll give my best. Expectations are high. If they trust me, I’ll return that trust on the field," he said.

Moving to one of the most important cities in the world was also a factor in his decision to leave Europe, the Argentine revealed.

"It’s important, yes. I think it’s a beautiful, very big city that has basically everything. But I’m from Buenos Aires, which is also a big city with lots of things going on. So I relate to it easily. I feel very comfortable."

NYCFC's newest star and the club's first designated signing in over two years spoke with GOAL about his decision to leave a La Liga-bound club to join Pascal Jansen's side and what his expectations are for the rest of the season.

South American vibes in the Big Apple

Fernández Mercau is moving to a city and country he's never lived in before, playing in a new league with different rules and roster setups than what he's previously used to, which would normally be an adjustment for some, but he enters a unique situation with

Luckily for the former San Lorenzo man, there are a lot of Latin Americans – mostly South Americans – on the squad. There are fellow Argentinians at NYCFC – Maxi Moralez and Agustín Ojeda – with whom Nico has already shared meals and mate, one of Argentina’s most cherished traditions.

"On my first day, the guys gave me a warm welcome. We had some mate, which is our tradition, and chatted about everything. They told me the club and the city are beautiful, and that I’ll feel really good here," he said.

NYCFC’s squad also includes Colombian Andrés Perea and Costa Rican striker Alonso Martínez, who should make Nico’s adjustment easier despite not speaking much English yet.

"It helps that they’re Latin and speak almost the same language," he said. "Concerns? No, I don’t think so. I’m in good shape…I’ll try to be 100 percent ready so I can earn my spot on the team and compete."

    Where Fernández Mercau fits

Fernández Mercau's arrival should serve as a boost to Jansen, as NYCFC have struggled with inconsistency throughout the 2025 season – currently sitting seventh in the East. The club hopes he will provide a spark in the attack, as it currently sits 20th in the league with 27 goals.

His attacking instinct, technique, and ability to join the attack caught the eye of the City Football Group – the global ownership group that also runs clubs like Manchester City, Girona, and NYCFC.

"I feel comfortable as an attacking midfielder, but I’ll play wherever the coach needs me. I’m not here to say where I should play — but that’s my position."

Fernández Mercau joined Elche from San Lorenzo in September 2022 and was a regular starter, even after the team’s relegation to the Segunda División. During his time with the he progressively got better with each season. He went from having a one-goal season in his initial campaign in La Liga to having a six-goal, eight-assist season last campaign in the Segunda Division. He clearly had the talent to remain in Spain as his strong campaign helped Elche return to La Liga, finishing second with 77 points.

"I’ll try to contribute from wherever I’m needed and do my best for the team. It’s a bit hard being away from family and loved ones. But this is my profession, and I need to be focused and give my best wherever I am," he said.

    Following a legend

In his new chapter in the Big Apple, Fernández Mercau will wear the No. 7 jersey – the same number initially worn by David Villa, one of the club’s legends and its first-ever signing when NYCFC was founded in 2014.

Delgado made his Boca debut in early 2024 and looked to be establishing himself in the South American side's regular starting lineup. However, the change in coaching set-up has not worked in his favour and now United have been tipped to make an offer to bring him to Old Trafford. They are not the only team supposedly interested, with Independiente, Godoy Cruz and Club Atletico Tigre also thought to be monitoring Delgado's situation.

Boca's current preference is to sell Delgado to a foreign club in the hope of obtaining a higher transfer fee. The 35-time Primera Division winners want more than €11 million (£9.4 million/$12.9 million) to permit a sale and United have been tipped to make an offer in the coming days.

GOAL's Hall of Fame: Marco van Basten – Netherlands' swan with broken wings

One of the great forwards of European football history, the Dutchman's career was cut cruelly short by injury

During his many years of training at Ajax, Marco van Basten learned from his mentor Johan Cruyff to anticipate the game, take time away from defenders and get to the ball before everyone else with exceptional timing. Despite his imposing stature, Van Basten moved around the football pitch with the elegance of a swan and the lightness of a butterfly, running on his tiptoes like a ballet dancer. His feints, touches, roulettes, headers and precise passes, with which he set up his team-mates, were like something out of a movie. His goals, acrobatic, with pure technique or power, scored from both open play and free-kicks, still enchant fans today when they happen to pop up on our YouTube or TikTok timelines.

The most sophisticated centre-forward in modern football and one of the best ever, Van Basten's place in GOAL's Hall of Fame is without question. One of the most legendary footballers in history, Van Basten was a perfectionist and a winner, as illustrated by his 24 team titles and various personal accolades, including his three Ballons d'Or.

Van Basten was a spectacular footballer who was loved by fans around the world. But he was also dogged by bad luck and a failing body that eventually brought his career to a heartbreakingly premature end.

GettyUnforgettable moments

From his brilliant performance against the USSR in the final of the 1988 European Championship to his heart-breaking farewell at the Stadio Meazza on 18 August 1995, the career of the 'Swan of Utrecht' is full of unforgettable moments that will forever remain part of football history.

First and foremost were his goals; many beautiful strikes, scored in every conceivable way. A total of 314, including 277 for at club level, were all carefully noted in his notebooks, as Van Basten's father Joop had taught him.

The most beautiful, and perhaps the most beautiful goal ever scored, came in the most important match in Dutch history, the 1988 Euros final. By the 54th minute, the Oranje were already leading 1-0 thanks to a header from Ruud Gullit, who cleverly converted a cross from Van Basten. It was at this point that the latter wrote himself into football history.

Arnold Muhren's cross from the left to the far post flew over Gullit, who was standing in the middle of the penalty area, and reached Van Basten on the edge of the box. Everyone expected a cross back into the middle, but the centre-forward instead scored with a spectacular and powerful volley to secure the Netherlands' first (and so far only) international success.

In terms of technique and spectacle, at least two other Van Basten goals are worth highlighting in a bid to explain his genius. He scored the first as a young player in the Eredivisie while playing for Ajax in 1986. Described as "a picture of beauty," by the man himself, Van Basten guided the ball into the corner with a breath-taking overhead kick to cap a fine team move.

"I know what I'm going to do, but I don't know yet whether the result will be acceptable," Van Basten recalled in his autobiography, 'Fragile'. "It could also go wrong. It's a pulled-back cross, so there are few options. There's still the header, but my solution is probably better. The ball is floating in the air… I use my speed, turn around immediately and manage to stay backwards in the air. It's high-performance gymnastics. Normally, I take a run-up with my right leg to jump, but this time I use my left… It's a precarious balance where everything has to come together again. You can either score or break your neck. And then comes the turn… I shoot with my right… I land well, on one arm. I touch the ground again at the moment the ball hits the net."

When it comes to acrobatic feats, one must also mention Van Basten's brilliant performance for AC Milan in the Champions League against IFK Gothenburg in November 1992. Van Basten was simply stunning, like a whirlwind sweeping over the unfortunate Swedes and poor goalkeeper Thomas Ravelli, as he scored four times, with the third the best of the evening and probably the most spectacular ever scored in a Rossoneri shirt.

Milan were already leading 2-0 when Van Basten read the trajectory of a cross perfectly and fired the ball into the left corner with a scissor kick that was unstoppable for Ravelli. A masterpiece of timing, precision and coordination.

However, Van Basten's football iconography encompasses many other moments and a whirlwind of emotions. From his debut in Ajax's first team, when he replaced his idol Cruyff from the bench, to his inevitable jump to gather momentum before taking a penalty, to the grimaces of pain when his ankle wouldn't let him rest, to his tears both after defeat in the Euro '92 semi-finals on penalties and after losing the 1993 Champions League final.

On 18 August, 1995, however, it was Van Basten who moved all Milan fans to tears. In a heart-breaking lap around the pitch, dressed in a suede jacket, the man who had inspired so many children to play football said goodbye to the game forever at the age of just 30 having not played for almost two years.

"In front of 80,000 people, I am witnessing my own farewell. Marco van Basten, the footballer, no longer exists," he wrote in his autobiography. "You see someone who is no longer there. You applaud a ghost. I run and clap, but I am already gone… Sadness rises from deep within. It overwhelms me. The chorus and the applause penetrate my armour. I want to cry, but I can't burst into tears like a child here. I try to stay calm… I stop running and clapping, the round is over. Something has changed, something fundamental. Football is my life. I have lost my life. Today, I died as a footballer. I am here, a guest at my own funeral."

Marcel 'Marco' van Basten, was born on 31 October 1964 in Utrecht. His passion for football was instilled in him by his father Joop, a former player who won a Dutch championship title, and Marco spent his early years at various clubs in his home town. He mostly played against older boys who tried to stop him by any means necessary, fair or foul; they almost never succeeded.

In 1981, at the age of 16, Van Basten was accepted into the Ajax youth academy, and a year later he made his first-team debut against NEC, with it immediately clear that he was an exceptional talent as, having come on for Cruyff, Van Basten scored the first goal of his professional career.

Cruyff later became his coach while Van Basten went on to score 152 goals in 172 games for Ajax, winning three Dutch championships, three domestic cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1987.

PinterestBest player on the best team

Van Basten became a star at Ajax, but after joining Milan and moving to Serie A, which was considered the best league in the world at the time, Van Basten developed into a true legend. First under the revolutionary Arrigo Sacchi, with whom he developed a love-hate relationship, and then under Fabio Capello, Van Basten quickly became the ideal finisher in an almost perfect system.

Even with his constantly bandaged and often painful right ankle, he reinterpreted the role of centre-forward and proved that he could also be an excellent playmaker. Van Basten enchanted supporters one his way to and winning three Scudetti, two Italian Super Cups, two European Cups, two European Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.

At the end of the 1980s, Milan were the best and most exciting team in the world, playing the most modern football, and Van Basten was their star player. He was twice top scorer in Serie A and once top scorer in the European Cup on his way to being awarded the Ballon d'Or on three occasions, in 1988, 1989 and 1992.

In 1994, Van Basten won both the Serie A title and the Champions League again, but this time as a spectator. His constant injuries had condemned him, at just 28 years of age, to watching from the sidelines since the summer of 1993. Before that, he scored 125 goals and provided 49 assists in 201 games for the Rossoneri. To this day, he is one of only two players to have scored at least one goal against every opponent in Serie A.

Getty ImagesFive sad minutes

What stopped Van Basten and forced him to retire early was not an opponent, but physical problems, in his case his permanently injured right ankle, which doctors were unable to heal.

In December 1992, the day after receiving his third Ballon d'Or, he underwent surgery on his right ankle in St. Moritz. But instead of the procedure getting the striker back into top form, this was the beginning of a long and painful period of suffering.

Van Basten was out of action until the spring of 1993, but it was clear upon his return, as he played through gritted teeth that he was no longer the same player he had been before. During the Champions League final of 1993, in which Milan lost to Marseille, it became clear to everyone that Van Basten's body was no longer doing as his brain wished.

Thrown on by Capello in the 85th minute, Van Basten could not inspire a comeback, and instead those five minutes at Munich's Olympic Stadium – the same ground at which he'd scored the most famous goal of his career – proved to be his last as a professional. The wings of the 'Swan of Utrecht' were broken forever.

SETOR OFENSIVO FICA DEVENDO

Rangers to offer out-of-work 47 y/o the chance to replace Philippe Clement

Rangers are believed to be willing to offer a 47-year-old manager the opportunity to replace Philippe Clement until the end of the season, according to a new update.

Rangers searching for Clement successor

There was an inevitability about Clement’s time in charge at Ibrox coming to an end, following a consistently disappointing run of results this season, especially in the Scottish Premiership. While they are still in the Europa League, it was hard to see things turning around positively enough in the coming weeks and months.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to St Mirren was too much for Rangers’ board to ignore, in a result that means they are still trailing Celtic by 13 points, with the Hoops also losing away to Hibernian over the weekend.

The search is now on to find Clement’s replacement at Ibrox, with Fabrizio Romano providing an update on a potential reunion with Steven Gerrard, saying: “At the moment nothing has been decided, so let’s keep all options open. The club is assessing options to replace Clement but nothing direct yet with Gerrard or his camp.”

It looks as though an interim boss will be brought in for the time being, however, potentially until the summer, and an intriguing update has dropped regarding who could come in.

47 y/o handed chance to manage Rangers

According to The Daily Record, Rangers are keen on making former player Barry Ferguson their next manager until the end of this season. The report says that the 47-year-old “will be given the chance to lead the club” leading up until the summer, prior to a permanent long-term boss coming in. In fact, a “whirlwind deal could be completed within 24 hours”, with “talks ongoing” with the popular ex-Gers captain.

Ferguson being named interim boss could be a decision that goes down well at Rangers, considering what a well-liked figure he was during his playing days, winning six Scottish Premiership titles and being named Player of the Year on three separate occasions.

Granted, the Scot hasn’t exactly had a memorable managerial career to date, most recently being in charge of Alloa Athletic until February 2022, meaning he hasn’t had a leading manager’s job of note for three years. That said, Rangers need a feel-good factor to return between now and the end of the season, and Ferguson could provide that, with the supporters feeling that they have one of their own in the dugout.

He knows the club inside out, and would no doubt show a huge amount of passion for the job, and if he can work wonders in charge, such as going far in the Europa League, he could even put himself in contention for the permanent job once the summer arrives.

49ers will love him: Rangers must hire "fantastic" manager who knows Wilson

As pressure mounts on Philippe Clement, the new 49ers ownership group at Rangers should look to hire “fantastic” out of work manager as replacement.

ByBen Gray Feb 24, 2025

There may be some fans who want to see a more proven manager come in temporarily, but the positives of bringing in Ferguson are clear to see, taking the time to get the permanent successor right this summer.

“If we can get the right player, that’s what we’re actively looking at. They’ve [the players] all been there, we have very short numbers for many weeks, they recognise the situation. Sometimes I consult the players on signings, especially if they know them. It’s away from the computer and the data, they can sense it, they know about them.”

While talks are yet to advance over any of their targets as things stand, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has reassured supporters – saying it is “highly likely” that Arteta’s side to end up bringing in a new centre-forward before the January deadline.

Arsenal managerMikelArtetabefore the match

“It’s highly likely,” said Romano on Arsenal’s search for a striker to GiveMeSport.

“This is the expectation of Mikel Arteta, so I expect the club to back him and find a solution on the market even if big clubs are not available.”

Another heavily-linked striker comes in the form of Wolves star Matheus Cunha, who is yet to pen a fresh contract at Wolves despite apparently agreeing financial terms. The sticking point has reportedly been Cunha’s desire to include a relegation clause, with the Brazilian’s talks over a new deal stalling and handing a transfer opportunity to interested sides.

Reliable journalist Ben Jacobs writes that he won’t come cheap, though, and Vitor Pereira’s side could demand as much as £80 million.

Arsenal discover Matheus Cunha wants to join them in January

In better news regarding their pursuit of Cunha, as per GiveMeSport, Arteta has been handed a “significant boost” in the race for his services.

The outlet claims Arsenal have discovered that Cunha wants to join them this month, with the Gunners in pole position ahead of fellow suitors Chelsea, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, that being said, Wolves remain determined to land the former Atlético Madrid star who’s scored 10 goals and assisted four others in all competitions so far this term – and in five different positions across the attacking third.

It could take a big-money bid from Arsenal to prise the “phenomenal” Cunha away from Molineux, but that was always going to be the case with any world-class forward midway through the campaign.

CONCACAF sanctioned Canada manager Jesse Marsch for multiple incidents that occurred during the third-place game of the 2025 Nations League, the federation announced Thursday.

After a disciplinary case was opened, CONCACAF reviewed documentation and evidence and, based on competition regulations and their disciplinary code, levied a one-game suspension on Marsch for "unacceptable conduct towards the match officials and for delaying the restart of the match by refusing to leave the field of play."

The one-match suspension will be added to the single-game suspension he was already set to serve as a result of being sent off during the match after receiving a straight red card on the touchline.

“The Disciplinary Committee has also warned the Canadian Soccer Association and Mr. Marsch that more severe sanctions could be taken should incidents occur during future matches,” a CONCACAF said in a statement.

Marsch was sent off in what would eventually be a 2-1 win over the USMNT after he stepped onto the pitch to complain about what he believed was a missed penalty call by referee Katia Itzel. The Canada manager was eventually restrained by a member of the officiating team over the matter.

“If I had to do it again, I would,” Marsch told The Athletic the morning after his red card. The manager said his team was "p*ssed off" at calls against them.

“It’s not like I went into the game thinking, ‘OK, I’m going to get thrown out.’ But I was definitely looking for opportunities to make a point, right?” Marsch added.

After the match, striker Jonathan David said he slipped on the second contested penalty that Marsch had questioned.

“If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t have run on the pitch or over into the other box on (the second possible missed penalty call). I would have done it on the other one before,” Marsch said. “But actually, the fourth official said to me when I was starting to escalate, ‘No, we all reviewed your what happened to you against Mexico and we’re aware of it and we’re going to look at this carefully.’

"And so I was like, ‘OK, they’re going to at least go to VAR,’ and then they don’t go to VAR. And then honestly, I was cursing myself. I should have freaking run over there, I should have forced a reaction.”
