Adama Traore let Wolves down va Brentford

Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to win yet again as they drew 1-1 at Brentford in today’s Premier League clash.

It was a gritty performance from Wolves, who were looking to claw their way out from the relegation zone, although it took a Ruben Neves equaliser in the second half to secure what might yet be an important away point.

Diego Costa, who looked lively during the match, was sent off in stoppage time for violent conduct, and that summed up Wolves’ campaign so far.

Rising star Hugo Bueno didn’t give his best performance either, winning just four of his ten duels during the game and losing the ball ten times, but Adama Traore was perhaps the Old Gold’s biggest liability.

Adama Traore put in another poor performance

Benefitting from an extended run in the team due to Pedro Neto’s injury, the Spain winger hasn’t exactly set the world on fire recently.

Against Leicester City last weekend, the 26-year-old completed just 20 passes as Wolves were thrashed 4-0, and today’s lethargic display won’t do him too many favours either.

A SofaScore rating of just 6/10 was the worst on the pitch today and he failed to threaten Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, registering no shots during the match.

The winger also failed to record a single successful dribble from three attempts while managing to lose possession a staggering 18 times as he struggled to assert his influence on the game.

With just 14 successful passes played, it’s clear that Traore was starved of any meaningful service on the wing, but this shouldn’t have hindered him from dropping deeper and trying to create opportunities.

The Spaniard has heaps of ability, but in tight matches such as today, the 26-year-old needs to be at his best in order to provide plenty of chances for his team-mates. With six failed crosses out of six, it was another bad day at the office.

Wolves face a home clash against Brighton and Hove Albion next week, and it is already looking like a must-win encounter if they are to go into the World Cup break outside of the Premier League relegation zone.

Wolves set to miss out on Pedro Martins

Wolves’ shortlist for Bruno Lage replacements at Molineux looks set to get a little shorter, with reports suggesting that Championship side Hull City are set to appoint Pedro Martins.

What’s the word?

Previous claims had suggested that the former Olympiacos boss was one man who could take over at Wolves after Lage was handed his marching orders following the 2-0 defeat against West Ham last weekend.

But now, The Athletic claim that the 52-year-old is set to join Hull City in the second tier, with the Tigers also managerless after they sacked Shota Arveladze.

Wolves avoiding a howler

In truth, Wolves should be setting their sights higher than Martins, who has been without a club since leaving Olympiacos in January.

During his time with the Greek giants, he would take charge of 221 matches, of which he won 143 with an impressive points per game average of 2.13, winning the league on three occasions.

He has also worked with the likes of Jose Sa and Daniel Podence during their time in Greece, but other than in a league which Olympiacos are expected to win, Martins’ managerial career has been very ordinary.

The 52-year-old started out at Maritimo in Portugal before spending time with Rio Ave and Vitoria Guimaraes in the same division, never averaging more than 1.55 points per game.

He has no experience of working in England and while he might be Portuguese so could communicate well with Wolves’ large lusitanic contingent, there is little to suggest that he would be an improvement on Lage, who had worked at a higher level than Martins in Portugal with Benfica.

The fact he is willing to take a job at Hull, who are currently 20th in the second tier, suggests that the Premier League may have been a step too far for Martins, and Fosun may well be dodging a bullet by not having him as an option.

The Old Gold will have to turn their attention towards other targets, such as Ruben Amorim and Bo Svensson, now that a move for Martins is seemingly off the table.

Pearce makes new Liverpool injury claim

Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho didn’t train with his teammates before the Champions League clash with Napoli, reports James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Jones missing out again

Jurgen Klopp’s side head to Naples for a tough assignment on Wednesday evening, as they get their European campaign underway for another season.

There are still injury problems for Liverpool to contend with, despite Thiago’s return being a huge boost, with Curtis Jones one of those who looks set to be unavailable for the game.

It was hoped that the 21 year-old local lad would be nearing full fitness this week after returning to training before the trip to Goodison Park, but he suffered another slight setback, and it appears he’s not the only young talent struggling…

The Latest: Pearce drops news update

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Pearce confirmed that Carvalho wasn’t part of training, meaning he almost certainly won’t feature at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona:

“No sign of Carvalho or Jones in open training at Kirkby.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

The Verdict: Shame for the youngster

This is a real blow for Carvalho, who will have been on cloud nine this time last week after scoring a dramatic last-gasp winner at home to Newcastle United.

[freshpress-poll id=“399042″]

His progress has been halted at a cruel time and it adds to Liverpool’s current midfield injury woes, with the youngster joining Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the sidelines.

The hope is that Carvalho is available for the weekend Premier League clash with Wolves at Anfield, however, potentially playing another key role from the substitutes’ bench.

Leeds eyeing move for 75-goal forward

Leeds United are in the hunt to sign Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan, according to Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: Hwang profiled

Hwang is 26 years of age and has only just made his move to Molineux permanent this summer following a loan spell last year.

The South Korea international has scored five times in 35 appearances for Wolves, taking his career tally for club and country to 76.

Labelled as a player who has “got everything” by pundit Ian Wright, Hwang can play anywhere across the front three and previously worked with Jesse Marsch at RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig.

The Latest: Leeds links

MOT Leeds News relayed an update from reliable reporter Nixon on Wednesday regarding the Whites and Hwang.

He claimed that Leeds are showing an interest in the player due to his versatility and could have a great chance if Dan James completes a move to Tottenham.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-50/” title=”Latest Leeds United news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Why not…

Leeds could do with a new forward even if James remains at Elland Road, with Patrick Bamford unable to remain fully fit.

Marsch is the manager who has got the best out of Hwang during his career, with the player contributing to an impressive 40 goals in 43 games under the American for both RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig.

The Leeds boss seemed unhappy with Hwang on the opening weekend after he threw himself to the ground right in front of the dugout at Elland Road under minimal contact. However, this could well be a link to keep an eye on and a transfer that seems to make sense in Yorkshire.

AVFC ‘interested’ in ‘first-class’ attacker

Aston Villa are ‘still interested’ in signing Chelsea’s Ross Barkley this summer, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Lowdown: Surplus to requirements

Barkley, who Frank Lampard described as ‘first-class’ back in 2020, is into the final 12 months of his Stamford Bridge contract.

The attacking midfielder is reportedly free to find a new club which would bring an end to his four-and-a-half-year stay with the Blues.

Villa took the 28-year-old on loan for the 2020/21 campaign, and it appears as if Johan Lange is keen on bringing the player back to the Midlands.

The Latest: Phillips’ post

Phillips took to Twitter on Saturday afternoon to provide an update on Barkley’s situation.

The journalist, who linked Villa with a move last weekend, confirmed that Steven Gerrard’s side are ‘still interested’ in a transfer but face competition from the likes of Brighton, Newcastle, West Ham and Everton, while Celtic have now made a ‘permanent’ offer.

The Verdict: Avoid?

Barkley has scored 52 senior goals for club and country during his career, three of which came when playing for Villa. However, Gerrard seems fairly well-stocked when it comes to attacking midfielders with Philippe Coutinho and Emi Buendia, so a move for Barkley doesn’t appear to be crucial.

The club could be better off looking to bolster their central midfield or centre-forward ranks instead, with Gerrard using a 4-3-1-2 system in the win over Everton.

Should he continue with that system, you could argue that Barkley would be third choice behind Coutinho and Buendia, so may not get much game time.

Spurs boss Conte eyes next priority

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has his sights set on another addition this summer transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, the Italian head coach would like further defensive reinforcements before deadline day on September 1st.

He told Football FanCast: “It does seem that Antonio Conte would like to bring in an extra centre-back, just to provide cover and competition.

“Pau Torres would be a great signing because I think he proved in the Champions League last season that he’s probably one of the top defenders in Europe.”

The Spain international is just one of several names that the north Londoners have been linked to in recent weeks. Despite the arrival of Clement Lenglet on loan from FC Barcelona, the Villarreal ace remains a key target, as per The Mirror.

Paratici must strike

If it’s another centre-back that Conte wants, then sporting director Fabio Paratici must deliver another masterclass as he has done with the signing of Cristian Romero, who has become an instant hit in N17.

Spurs will be competing in multiple competitions, both domestically and on the European stage, and given that the Italian head coach likes to deploy a three-at-the-back system, then it makes sense to have strength in depth.

Lenglet provides competition for Ben Davies as his only left-footed defensive options, but behind the likes of Romero and Eric Dier, there is little quality.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Torres is certainly one name who could improve that situation tenfold.

Once lauded as an “extraordinary talent” by his former youth coach Javi Calleja, the 25-year-old excels as a ball-playing defender. When compared to his positional peers across Europe, he ranks within the top 1% for dribbles completed (0.80), and the top 10% for both progressive passes (4.39) and progressive carries (4.71) per 90 (via FBref).

Tottenham have also been linked with a move for RB Leipzig gem Josko Gvardiol, who has been touted as a future star.

“Since he was a child, he’s been built like a tank. He can go forward, he can jump, he can tackle – he can do everything you want,” once claimed Germania Sport assistant editor Izak Ante Sucic.

Either of the two would add substantial quality to Spurs’ squad, particularly with Torres as he has proven experience in both the Champions League and the Europa League, having won the latter competition in 2020/21.

It’s now on Paratici to deliver the goods for a seventh time this summer.

Newcastle: Jones makes Onana claim

Transfer insider Dean Jones has dropped a bombshell claim regarding interest from Newcastle United in LOSC Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.

The lowdown: Rapid rise to prominence

Signed from Hamburg last summer, Onana has continued on an upwards career trajectory at the Ligue 1 outfit and has already established himself as an integral member of the first team.

Born in Senegal, the 20-year-old is a one-cap senior Belgium international has also amassed 67 professional domestic outings, having also represented Hoffenheim with distinction at various youth levels during a three-year stint at the Bundesliga club.

Now, despite only being a recent arrival at Lille and still being under contract until 2026 (Transfermarkt), West Ham have already shown their interest by making a €23m (£19.3m) bid, and Newcastle could be about to follow suit…

The latest: ‘Keeping an eye on him’

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones has claimed that the Magpies have Onana on the radar at St James’ Park, as Eddie Howe looks to bolster the ranks once again.

He said: “I know that with Onana, Newcastle have been keeping an eye on him too.

“So, if they were to look for somebody who’s not especially high-profile, but somebody of a specific style and a defensive midfielder, then they might come in for him too.”

The verdict: Make it happen

Standing just shy of 6 foot 4, Onana certainly boasts an imposing physical presence at the base of the midfield and as such, won 3.4 duels and made 1.5 tackles on average per game whilst earning a respectable 6.85 SofaScore rating in Ligue 1 last term.

Overall, the towering enforcer- who was likened to Liverpool star Fabinho by reputable football talent scout Jacek Kulig – scored three times and provided one assist across 40 appearances across all competitions – featuring in all eight UEFA Champions League matches for Lille in the process.

Unsurprisingly possessing imperious aerial ability as well as strong tackling and passing qualities (WhoScored), Onana would be a sensational signing for Newcastle this summer with the defensive midfield department somewhat threadbare away from Bruno Guimaraes.

Holding a perceived market value at a wholly affordable £9m, even with the lengthy-time remaining on a contract in France, Dan Ashworth and PIF should be confident and moreover, pushing, to make this statement signing happen for Howe.

Tottenham ‘offer’ made as report emerges from Spain

Tottenham Hotspur and by extension transfer chief Fabio Paratici have made an offer for one of Antonio Conte’s transfer targets as news emerges from Spain in the last 48 hours.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites push for more deals…

The signing of Yves Bissouma, preceded by Bosman deals for Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster, are seemingly not the only pieces of business possible at Spurs before the 2022/23 Premier League season.

It is reliably believed that sporting director Fabio Paratici has his eyes on strengthening at least three more positions as Conte seeks a new right wing-back, a star striker and an assured central defensive upgrade for his back three.

The Latest: Mundo Deportivo share Spurs ‘offer’…

To that effect, Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan has been linked throughout this transfer window so far, but reports have now emerged involving another centre-back wanted by Conte.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet has received an ‘offer’ from the north Londoners as they eye a possible two-year loan deal.

The Frenchman, who is set to evaluate this approach alongside another one from Marseille, has now scheduled a crunch meeting with his agent ‘by the end of this week’.

The Verdict: Good option?

Despite his lofty £170,000-per-week salary, this move could be viewed as the most economical option overall for Spurs if Barca agree to a two-year loan deal.

Paying no lofty transfer fee, like they would have to for the likes of Bastoni, could save Paratici and Spurs a great deal of finance, but we believe that investing in more quality targets is far more advantageous in the long run.

Lenglet has struggled for a regular starting place at Barca over the last year despite once showing real promise, and he should perhaps come as a fallback option at best.

Sky journalist drops Derby takeover update

A Sky Sports journalist has shared a ‘positive’ update for Derby County fans regarding the takeover of the club.

The Lowdown: Kirchner withdraws offer

The newly-relegated League One side are currently on the hunt for a new owner after it was revealed earlier this week that initial preferred bidder, American businessman Chris Kirchner, had officially withdrawn his offer to buy the Rams after failing to meet a deadline set by administrators Quantuma.

There was fears that this would mean a case of going back to square one and into the unknown for the Rams, but following a new update, there is yet again optimism that a deal will be able to be completed thanks to a potential new suitor.

The Latest: Sky share ‘positive’ development

Sharing a fresh ‘development’, Sky presenter and journalist Julian Warren gave Derby supporters some ‘positive’ news after the ordeal with Kirchner when speaking live on Sky Sports News.

Warren confirmed that former Wolves owner Steve Morgan has renewed his interest in buying the club and is currently in negotiations over a possible takeover. The bid has been described to Sky as ‘credible’.

The Verdict: Long-term stability

With less than two months until the start of the new season, Wayne Rooney will need as much clarity and financial backing as possible as he prepares his players for life in the third tier.

Morgan would be the ideal candidate to rescue the Rams after giving Wolves plenty of long-term stability when he took charge at Molineux, having bought the club for £10m before overseeing the Wanderers’ promotion to the Premier League.

Hopefully, the 69-year-old will be able to bring that same kind of safety net to Pride Park if a deal finally manages to get done, giving all associated with Derby a bit more hope for a brighter future.
