Zakir, Shanto keep hosts steady after India A take 353-run lead

Bangladesh A were on the path to recovery on the third day of the first four-day Test against India A in Cox’s Bazar courtesy Zakir Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto. Zakir was unbeaten on 81 while Shanto finished 56 not out, with the duo adding 101 runs for the unbroken second wicket. The home side ended the day on 172 for 1, still trailing India A by 181 runs. The third day started with the visitors on 404 for 5, and they batted for a further 15 overs to finish on 465 for 5 to take an overall lead of 353 runs. Upendra Yadav remained unbeaten 71 off 122 balls with five fours and two sixes, while Tilak Varma retired hurt on 33 off 100 balls. The Bangladesh A bowlers failed to pick up a single wicket in these 15 overs.Bangladesh, who were skittled out for 112 in their first stint gave a much better account of themselves the second time around. Their openers Zakir and Mahmudul Hasan Joy added 71 runs for the opening stand before the latter fell to left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar in India A’s only success on the day, having made 21.Zakir, however, remained firm at the other end, hitting eight fours and two sixes during his stay at the crease. Shanto, coming in at No. 3, gave him good support, scoring seven fours during his knock.By the stumps were drawn, Bangladesh A were still quite a distance behind India A’s score, so the fourth day will be an opportunity for these two left-handers to get a bigger score, followed by Mominul Haque, who is desperately looking for runs.

Pep must drop 4/10 Man City ace who just ruined his big chance to shine

Manchester City survived a scare in the FA Cup fourth round away to League One side Leyton Orient. Pep Guardiola’s side won 2-1 thanks to an admittedly lucky goal from new signing Abdukodir Khusanov before Kevin De Bruyne showed his class to win the game for the Citizens.

It was the home side who took the lead, with Orient close to scoring one of the all-time great FA Cup goals through Tottenham Hotspur loanee Jamie Donley. The attacker lobbed City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from 45 yards out, with his strike clipping the bar before bouncing in off the German goalkeeper’s back, going down as an own goal.

Just 11 minutes after the second half began, the Citizens equalised after Rico Lewis’ shot from range deflected in off Khusanov’s head. It was a slightly fortunate goal, which completely wrong-footed the goalkeeper and nestled into the back of the net.

With 11 minutes to go, the Citizens had their winner. It was a lovely move rounded off by some quality from De Bruyne. Jack Grealish played a lovely clipped ball over the Orient defence that the Belgian ran onto and finished expertly.

It was not pretty from the Citizens, but they are, ultimately, through to the fifth round. There were some standout players on the pitch for them.

City's best players against Orient

One of the standout players for City on Saturday lunchtime was Grealish. He was a creative force for 2023 winners, fashioning several chances which included his excellent ball over the top for De Bruyne which led to the winning goal.

Grealish’s stats from Sofascore show just how important he was today for Guardiola’s side. Playing on the left-hand side, the England international created five chances, including three big chances, and won four duels. It was an impressive performance.

Another player who was impressive against the League One outfit was Brazilian winger Savinho. The summer signing was constantly involved on the right, holding width well and running at the opposition defenders.

Charlie Parker-Turner, a journalist for The Express, agreed that Savinho performed well against Orient. He was given a 7/10 for his display, described as a “bright performance” and that “he was the pick of the City attackers”.

However, the same cannot be said for James McAtee, who struggled to impact the game at all.

McAtee's stats v Orient

It was a tough day at the office for City academy graduate McAtee. After a move in January to German champions Bayer Leverkusen did not materialise, he had to take his chance for City when it arose. Unfortunately, he struggled against Orient.

Operating as a No 10, the 22-year-old did not really have much of an impact on the game, struggling to create any chances of note. He did hit the post in the second half, but other than that, his contribution was disappointing.

McAtee’s stats from the game show just how frustrating of an afternoon it was for him. He completed just 78% of his passes and had only 37 touches in 72 minutes on the pitch. The City number 87 failed to create a chance and only won two duels from nine.

His tough afternoon was also noticed by Parker-Turner, who gave the Englishman a 4/10 for his performance. McAtee “never truly looked like leaving his mark on the game”, which is frustrating given how rare his opportunities can be.

After a hat-trick in the third round, McAtee would have loved to back that up with another good performance. He is clearly a talented player, but given he has only started five times this season, he needed to take his chance today.

The Englishman will be hoping the chance to start comes again soon, although he will have to wait as fielding him against Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off round next time out is a bridge too far.

Pakistan bowlers boss Netherlands to keep their hopes alive

Netherlands could only manage 91 before Rizwan guided Pakistan home in the small chase

Pakistan’s fast bowlers proved too hot for Netherlands on a bouncy surface in Perth, giving them a comfortable six-wicket win and their first points of the T20 World Cup. Overwhelmed by the Pakistan bowling attack, Netherlands could post only 91 for 9 after choosing to bat and eventually lost their third game in a row in the Super 12s.Netherlands’ batters were tested by short balls, with Bas de Leede copping a bouncer on the grille which forced him to retire hurt. Shaheen Shah Afridi took 1 for 19, Haris Rauf cranked his pace up to finish with 1 for 10, Naseem Shah conceded only 11 runs in four overs while Mohammad Wasim impressed with his back-to-back wicket-taking yorkers. Shadab Khan complemented the seamers, his wristspin accounting for three wickets. The sub-100 chase was expectedly comfortable for Pakistan, with two key cogs to their batting line-up getting among the runs. After Babar Azam fell cheaply, Mohammad Rizwan (49) and No. 3 Fakhar Zaman (20) – the latter returning to the XI after a knee injury kept him away for seven weeks – put together a 37-run stand. Pakistan closed out the chase with 37 balls to spare, which was also their very first T20I win on Australian soil. The win for Pakistan, their first after two last-ball losses to start the World Cup, keeps them in contention for semi-final spot, but fate is no longer in their hands. Not only do they need to win their last two games – against Bangladesh and South Africa – but also need results from other Group 2 games going their way.A new-ball test of fire
The Pakistan quicks stepped up with the new ball for the third game in a row, with Afridi earning his first new-ball wicket in the competition too. He went short to opener Stephan Myburgh, drawing a top-edged pull from the left-hand batter. The extra bounce induced that error, and the other pace bowlers caught on to that quickly. The seamers got the ball to rise awkwardly while operating at more than 140kph, and the No. 3 de Leede faced the brunt of it when a Rauf short ball left him with a bleeding cut under his right eye. De Leede was later replaced by concussion substitute Logan van Beek.Shadab owns the middle overs
Pakistan conceded only two boundaries in the powerplay, allowing Netherlands to score only 19 runs in the first six overs. Shadab was introduced by Babar as soon as the field restrictions were lifted.Shadab had finished his spell against Zimbabwe with two wickets off his last two balls and against Netherlands, he struck off his first ball, getting No. 4 Tom Cooper to pull a loose half-tracker to deep midwicketWhile that was a lucky break, the next dismissal wasn’t with Shadab’s googly turning in sharply and pinning opener Max O’Dowd in front of middle and leg stumps. That wicket had Netherlands reeling at 34 for 3 after ten overs. The captain Scott Edwards then looked to build a partnership with Colin Ackermann, but the boundaries were hard to come by, as they relied more on the singles and twos. However, the 35-run fourth-wicket partnership off 37 balls was ended by Shadab when Ackermann missed the reverse lap and was hit in front of off stump. He finished with 3 for 22.Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for Pakistan with 49 runs•Getty Images

The quicks wrap it up
With the final quarter of the innings left, Edwards tried to play some innovative shots, but his scoop off Naseem went to deep fine leg. Roelof van der Merwe was dismissed next, backing away to Rauf before having his stumps flattened. With Netherlands at 74 for 6 after 17 overs, chances of a big finish appeared slim. The seamers conceded only 17 in the last 18 balls, with Wasim causing most of the damage with his back-to-back yorkers that shattered the stumps of Tim Pringle and Fred Klaassen. Naseem bowled a tight 20th over to finish with an economy of 2.75 in four overs and set Pakistan a target of 92.Runs for Rizwan, Fakhar
After a short delay due to impending rain, the chase began with Babar and Rizwan looking to get back in form with a small target ahead of them. Rizwan raced off the blocks but Babar was run out via a van der Merwe direct hit for 4.Fakhar entered at No. 3, instead of Shan Masood, and played away from his body to find boundaries through the off side. When the Dutch seamers aimed at his pads, he used his wrists to clear the leg-side infield.Even though Fakhar had an injury scare after an awkward dive, he recovered to continue. However, he was dismissed for 20 when he got an outside edge to a ball angling across him, with the wicketkeeper taking a screamer diving to his left.Masood, who came in at No.4, then combined with Rizwan, who hit five fours during his 39-ball 49. However, both batters fell late in the chase, Rizwan one short of his 23rd T20I fifty and Masood one short of the target. That brought Shadab into the middle. He cracked a four to hit the winning runs, and soon after collected the Player-of-the-Match award while still wearing his pads.

Tom Prest's stunning 181 propels Hampshire to club-record List A total

19-year-old batter leads Hampshire to 396 at Beckenham as Kent slide to heavy defeat

Hampshire thrashed Kent Spitfires by 163 runs in the Royal London Cup at Beckenham, after a sensational 181 by Tom Prest. The 19-year-old creamed the Kent attack to every corner of the ground in an innings of 138 balls, which included seven sixes. Prest put on a stand of 207 with Nick Gubbins, who himself hit 117 from 107 balls, as the visitors posted 396 for 5 from their 50 overs, a club-record List A total.Hamid Qadri was the pick of Kent’s bowlers, but even his two wickets came at the cost of 71 balls and the Spitfires slumped from 45 without loss to 233 all out in a run chase that looked doomed as soon as wickets began to fall. Jack Campbell had Hampshire’s best figures with 4 for 44, while Alex Blake was Kent’s top scorer with 62.The word was that the wicket wasn’t a typical Beckenham road but Kent’s decision to field looked rash, as an attack that had to do without Grant Stewart, who was playing purely as a batter due to a heel injury, struggled to make any impression.Related

A healthy crowd of over around 1,800 saw Hampshire’s openers made 49 without loss before Nathan Gilchrist bowled Aneurin Donald for 21, but that was the hosts’ last success for over two hours, as Gubbins and Prest flayed the bowling.Gubbins cut Joey Evison for four to reach his 50, while Prest survived an early appeal for a catch after reverse-sweeping Qadri and reached his half-century by hitting George Linde for six over cow corner.Gubbins’ century arrived during a bruising over for allrounder Joey Evison that went for 17. Prest took five from the first two balls and Gubbins hit 12 from the remaining four.Prest glanced Gilchrist for two to reach three figures, but the stand was finally broken when Qadri took two wickets in the 38th over. Gubbins finally fell when he was caught by Gilchrist and the hosts’s hopes were fleetingly raised when Ben Brown was caught by sub fielder George Ealham for just 2.They quickly nosedived again as Toby Albert joined Prest and made a rapid 35 before he was lbw to Navdeep Saini.Prest drove Quinn for four to pass 150 and eventually perished in the 50th over when he holed out to Gilchrist and was caught on the boundary by Ealham. It said something about the way the innings had gone that the home fans were relieved Hampshire hadn’t reached 400 and Kent made a solid enough start to the chase, reaching 45 without loss before Ben Compton was caught by Fletcha Middleton off John Turner for 24.Campbell then quickly removed both Tawanda Muyeye and Ollie Robinson. The latter made 40 before he was caught behind and Robinson was caught by Scott Currie for 22.Felix Organ had Joey Evison caught for one by Ian Holland and when Prest then had George Linde caught by Holland for 3, Kent were 113 for 5 and fans were already starting to leave. They missed some fireworks from Blake, but he rapidly ran out of partners. Stewart offered some brief entertainment with 15 before he fell to a steepling catch by Donald off Organ.Blake smacked Prest for a six over long-off to reach 50 and stood his ground after a strong appeal for a catch off Organ, but then fell to a superb diving catch by Donald in the same over, the brilliance of which was nearly matched by Albert when sprinted to remove Qadri off Currie for seven.Campbell had Matt Quinn caught by Holland for eight and despite some late hitting by Gilchrist, who made his highest List A score of 33, the rout was completed when he swished Campbell to Gubbins.

Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje put South Africa in charge on curtailed day

England six down and struggling despite Ollie Pope’s unbeaten half-century

Alan Gardner17-Aug-2022South Africa took a grip on proceedings on a rain-affected first day at Lord’s, plucking out six England wickets before the weather closed in half an hour into the afternoon session. Kagiso Rabada struck twice in his opening spell and Anrich Nortje’s pace brought three more to keep the home side under the cosh.Dean Elgar cited the “overheads” for his decision to ask England to make the running with the bat for the first time this summer (all four of the Tests won under Ben Stokes’ captaincy have been based on a template of chasing a target in the fourth innings), and his seam attack responded with the perfect blend of skill and aggression in cloudy, humid conditions.England were grateful to Ollie Pope, whose proactive half-century made sure they were not completely sunk by the time forecast rain arrived, moments after Ben Foakes had been bowled off his inside edge, poking tentatively at Nortje in the post-lunch murk.Elgar had announced in his final press conference before the start of the series that he was “not going to entertain” any more talk of Bazball – as England’s new approach to Test cricket has been dubbed – and the focus of the morning quickly became how Stokes’ team might tailor their preferred batting style to setting up a game in the face of a probing examination from South Africa’s four quicks.England’s most-productive stand was 45 added for the fifth wicket between Pope and Stokes, the only two batters to get into double-figures. Both openers fell cheaply, and there was little of the buccaneering intent that brought four successive victories at the start of Stokes’ tenure as captain. Joe Root was lbw for 8, a marginal decision backed up by DRS in the impressive Marco Jansen’s second over, and Jonny Bairstow lost his middle stump to Nortje as England slumped to 55 for 4.South Africa, buoyed by winning the toss, could call on Rabada as their attack leader after he “pulled up 100%” following an ankle ligament injury, and he was on the mark from the outset. Alex Lees got away with one ambitious swipe that flew over the slip cordon but fell in the same over, wafting away from his body to be caught behind.Zak Crawley, retained as Lees’ opening partner despite averaging 17.75 from four previous Tests this summer, did his best to negotiate a thorough examination around off stump, largely packing away his aggressive strokes. But having squirted a thick outside edge through gully for a second boundary, he was undone by Rabada’s wobble-seam delivery, which produced just enough movement to find the edge and present a low catch to the cordon.South Africa lost a review when asking for a second look at Lungi Ngidi’s lbw appeal against Pope, but things continued to go their way when Jansen struck from the Pavilion End, where he regularly used the slope to bring the ball back in to England’s right-handers. Having declined another lbw shout that ball-tracking showed would have just clipped the top of Pope’s leg stump, Nitin Menon raised his finger in the affirmative to the politest of appeals against Root. The former Test captain reviewed, but in vain.Root has actually been usurped as England’s most in-form Test batter, with Bairstow coming into the series on the back of a stellar run against New Zealand and India. But following four hundreds in five innings, he notched the 16th duck – and the 38th dismissal bowled – of his Test career, as Nortje brought one back through the gate to make a mess of the wordwork.England had only scored four boundaries during the first hour, but Pope took Nortje for back-to-back fours and, although he survived some close moments against Jansen’s left-arm inswing, played punchily through the morning to bring up a 69-ball fifty.Stokes did produce a familiar charge at his sixth ball, swiping and missing at Jansen, and flirted with danger while also finding the boundary four times. Pope, too, was fortunate when an edge off Nortje evaded the diving Keegan Petersen at third slip in the final over before lunch. But Nortje finished a strong morning showing for South Africa by jagging one away to find Stokes’ outside edge and end a minor recovery.Nortje picked up his third shortly after the break but, with the floodlights on amid heavy cloud cover at Lord’s, England No. 8 Stuart Broad only had to face two balls before the umpires took the players off. Rain came steadily before turning torrential, an early tea followed by the abandonment of play at 4.30pm.

Man Utd submit offer to sign £58m ace who’s reportedly spoken to Amorim

Turning their attention towards the January transfer window in the middle of another tough spell of form, Manchester United are reportedly pressing to sign a defensive reinforcement who has already spoken to Ruben Amorim.

Man Utd transfer news

Shocked by Wolverhampton Wanderers and embarrassed by Bournemouth at Old Trafford, Manchester United desperately need the January transfer window to arrive, especially since they sit eight points clear of the dropzone in what should not even be a concern for a side of their stature heading into the second half of the season. With Newcastle United up next, however, things don’t get any easier.

Man Utd on red alert as January opportunity emerges to sign "fantastic" ace

The Red Devils could land a bargain deal…

1 ByTom Cunningham Dec 29, 2024

Even in the middle of such a run, it doesn’t look as though Marcus Rashford will be granted a return after being exiled by Amorim. Yet to be impressed by the Carrington graduate, the new manager looks set to show Rashford the door and leave some of Europe’s biggest clubs circling around his signature when 2025 arrives.

Instead, the focus looks set to be on finding players who suit his 3-4-2-1 system to finally turn things around at Old Trafford, which may well see a vital defensive reinforcement arrive.

According to RMC Sport, via Sport Witness, Manchester United have submitted an opening offer to sign Nuno Mendes from Paris Saint-Germain in the winter window. SW also relayed reports from Portugal that the left-back has already spoken to Amorim in what was reportedly a convincing conversation.

Having been not impressed at PSG’s new contract proposal, Mendes’ current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2026. Whether that hands United the chance to land a cut-price deal remains to be seen, but it could certainly accelerate any transfer.

"Explosive" Mendes could be instant upgrade

A player who thrived under Amorim at Sporting Club to earn a deserved move to PSG, Mendes, valued at £58m, seemingly has the chance to work under his former manager at Manchester United in what would be the biggest move of his career yet. The left-back could be an instant upgrade too, given how well he knows the new system and how much of an attacking threat he provides compared to Diogo Dalot.

Still just 22 years old, the best is yet to come for Mendes as Manchester United look to become the ultimate benefactor in continued rise to the top of European football.

Replacing Luke Shaw feels more and more important for those at Old Trafford, with patience slowly running thin over his ability to avoid consistent injury setbacks. Dubbed “explosive” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Mendes should be high up on the list of candidates to replace the England international as early as the January transfer window.

Joe Root kept waiting as Alastair Cook serves up another hundred

Essex 234 for 3 (Cook 107, Walter 89*) vs Yorkshire
And so it came to pass that England’s former captain duly racked up a chanceless century at Chelmsford, in front of a bustling spring crowd and with more than just the usual smattering of photographers and TV cameras in attendance. Not that the innings told us much about Joe Root’s readiness for his return to the Test ranks, however, for the ex-skipper in question was Root’s own predecessor Alastair Cook. With the sun on his back, and full faith in a surface from which he has now picked off 258 runs in five innings this season, Cook ground along in his inimitably bloodless fashion for 20 minutes shy of six hours, with Paul Walter unwavering alongside him, on 89 from 228 balls. It was all thoroughly serene for Essex as the shadows began to stretch over the County Ground – misleadingly serene, you might argue, given the off-field developments in the club’s slow-burn racism row. An open-faced nudge through third man – all angles and soft hands – took Cook to 99, then one ball later, a back-foot crack through point carried him through to first-class hundred No. 71.But then, with a daddy seemingly at his mercy, Cook fatefully lost concentration with just four overs of the day remaining, under-edging a back-foot drive as Steve Patterson came round the wicket and departing with a swish of frustration but to a familiar standing ovation. It had been a similar scenario for his opening-day century against Kent, in fact – 100 from 266 balls then, 107 from 268 now. In his pomp, he wouldn’t have allowed a nightwatchman to get the best of the day two conditions, that’s for sure.Root, in his first public outing since stepping down as England captain, will have to wait – although you sense he’s already seen enough to know that his own first-class hundred No. 37 is very much on the cards sometime this weekend – assuming his team-mates give him a look-in. As an aside, there has surely never been a non-international fixture boasting two men with a combined Test runs tally as high as 22,361 duking it out on opposing teams. For the time being, Root was limited to three tidy overs of offspin in the afternoon session, while in an apparent demonstration of the “selfless” credentials that his successor Ben Stokes has called for in his Test team, he made only fleeting appearances on the periphery of the slip cordon – the suggestion being that he does not wish to disrupt Yorkshire’s more regular line-up of close catchers.Mind you, Yorkshire’s position in this game might have been better had he done so. After Nick Browne’s departure to the third ball of the match, Harry Brook, at Root’s habitual position of first slip, dropped a sitter off Tom Westley that could have left Essex teetering at 10 for 2. He later repeated the error as Cook, in a solitary aberration, climbed into a loose drive one ball after his century with Jordan Thompson twice the luckless bowler. George Hill, Browne’s executor, also let a tough low chance fizz through his grasp at third slip – the second of two lives in as many overs for Walter who, to complete a catalogue of what-ifs, was dropped by Patterson in his followthrough on 12.But all these moments were mere footnotes to another totemic grind from Cook, whose only moment of alarm prior to his hundred arguably came on 64, when Walter’s long levers connected sweetly with a biff through the line off Dom Bess that damned near decapitated his team-mate as he ducked for cover at the non-striker’s end.Cook’s opening gambit set the tone for the day. Essex’s innings was already 35 balls old before – to ironic cheers – he nudged a single off his legs to tick up the team’s first run, and leave them on a becalmed 1 for 1 after six overs: a powerplay this was not. His next scoring shot was a picture-perfect drive through the covers off Thompson, and seeing as that stroke tended to be the last one out of his locker during his Test career, it told you all you needed to know about another demon-free surface that doubtless meets the ECB’s new requirements but potentially at the cost of a short-term contest between bat and ball.Yorkshire huffed and puffed to little avail. The green tinge on the pitch had persuaded Patterson to bowl first after winning the toss, but without the cutting edge of Haris Rauf, who pulled his side after a first-innings five-for against Kent – let alone Matt Fisher and his euphemistically worded stress reaction in his back – there was little traction to be had from any of the remaining quicks.Instead it was left to Bess to carry the first-day burden with 23 tidily delivered overs, including the second of the two wickets they managed in the lifespan of their first new ball. The timing of that breakthrough was serendipitous, as Tom Westley feathered an edge through to Harry Duke in Bess’s first over, although the ball itself was little more than a wide long-hop. Nevertheless, as Bess demonstrated with his five-wicket haul in Sri Lanka last year, before his form disintegrated on the India leg of that trip, he does have a happy knack for such breakthroughs.By the close, all eyes had turned to Walter, and his quietly determined quest to atone for his disappointment against Northamptonshire last week. On that occasion, his excellent match-saving rearguard had ended seven runs shy of a maiden first-class hundred; today he left the field 11 runs short of the mark, but crucially, he did so having leant on his bat handle at the non-striker’s end while watching Sam Cook do his nocturnal duties. Having come so close so recently, he’s determined to make amends at the earliest opportunity.

Contact made: Freedman now eyeing Crystal Palace move to sign £50m player

With results gradually beginning to pick up under Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace and Dougie Freedman have reportedly made their first contact over a possible deal to sign a winger worth a hefty £50m.

Crystal Palace transfer news

After an alarming start to the season, the Eagles have lost just once in their last five games in all competitions and even managed to pick up an impressive 2-2 draw against Aston Villa last time out. Still one point adrift of the dropzone, however, there’s no doubt that those in South London must return to the transfer market for reinforcements in the January transfer window.

On that front, rumours are already beginning to emerge, with players such as Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa recently linked to Selhurst Park in what would be an impressive coup for the Premier League strugglers. Now 29 years of age, the Argentine forward could rediscover his best form whilst handing Palace a much-needed boost.

Correa’s not the only attacking player reportedly on the Eagles’ radar ahead of 2025, however. According to Caught Offside, Crystal Palace have asked to be kept informed about Patrick Dorgu – making their first contact with Italian club Lecce – over a possible deal that would cost a hefty £50m.

Whether Palace have the means to spend such money remains to be seen, but even if they do, it is reportedly London rivals Chelsea who currently lead the race to sign the winger in 2025.

Glasner must unleash "fantastic" Crystal Palace star who can save his job

Glasner must unleash “fantastic” Palace star in order to save his job

ByConnor Holden Nov 29, 2024

With sporting director Freedman seemingly eyeing a move to sign the 20-year-old, there’s no doubt that Dorgu will be one to watch, especially if Palace want to finally fill the void left behind by Michael Olise when he swapped South London for Bayern Munich last summer. For £50m, Palace would certainly steal the headlines too.

"Unique" Dorgu could sharpen blunt Crystal Palace attack

Only basement side Southampton have managed to score less than Crystal Palace’s eight goals in the Premier League, as they continue to recover from losing Olise during the summer transfer window. What was an exciting attack spearheaded by an in-form Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was joined by Eberechi Eze and Olise is now a far cry from its best version. And Glasner’s side have suffered as a result.

Dorgu could help change that, however. The 20-year-old, who can play left-back and on both wings, has gradually made the transition from full-back into a dangerous winger, scoring three goals so far this season. As a versatile option, he could solve both Glasner’s attacking problems and hand him another defensive option in what would be vital depth.

Described as a “unique specimen” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Palace could be getting one of Europe’s most interesting young talents by signing Dorgu in 2025.
