Newcastle ace looked "like Alan Shearer", but then Benitez sold him

Newcastle United have got a pair of strikers in Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson who bring goals and influence to the St. James’ Park pitch – it wasn’t always that way.

The lucrative PIF takeover and appointment of Eddie Howe have turned Newcastle toward prominence, a place at the height of the Premier League that would place the club alongside the finest outfits in the business; they are working toward it.

Reliable goalscorers are fundamental parts of a high-performing team. Newcastle struggled for purchase in the final third for many years before particularly Isak signed his contract, and though there have been flashes of brilliance across the past few decades, it might stretch back to Alan Shearer’s time since such a standard of focal frontman plied their trade in black and white.

Alan Shearer's record at Newcastle

There are certain sportspeople who etch themselves into lore, carving themselves not into their sphere’s history books but onto the front cover. From time immemorial.

Over in Newcastle, Shearer did just that, though, of course, the striker-turned-pundit is a household name across all of Britain, with his haul of 260 goals in the Premier League a feat matched by only… no one.

Harry Kane, 31, looked to be sidling on up to him across a career of clinical shooting with Tottenham Hotspur, but the England record scorer’s transfer to Bayern Munich has preserved Shearer’s record. Much to Tyneside’s relief.

The 54-year-old is one of football’s finest-ever goalscorers, with most of his football coming for his boyhood club, where he notched 206 goals and 58 assists across 405 matches in all competitions, winning United’s Player of the Year four times.

The Newcastle legend famously made his £15m switch from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 1996, just over one year after winning the Premier League with the Blues and Whites, a trophy which would prove to be the sole major honour of his career.

Nonetheless, he graced St. James’ Park with his prowess over a decade, completing ten seasons in the English top flight for the Toon. Though they tried, Newcastle failed to replace their lionised forward across the duration of the gloomy Mike Ashley era.

Alan Shearer

Speaking of Isak, Shearer has said that “everything about his game is of the highest quality”, which certainly bodes well for the 25-year-old’s future success in the Premier League.

Newcastle might never have shelled out the club-record £63m fee for the Sweden international had a former striker, believed to be Shearer reincarnate, reached the envisaged heights.

But Aleksandar Mitrovic was sold before he hit his peak, having struggled to bring it all together for Newcastle.

Aleksandar Mitrovic was supposed to be Shearer 2.0

Just over nine years ago, Newcastle signed Mitrovic from Belgian club Anderlecht for £13m on a five-year deal, believing they had signed one of Europe’s most talented young forwards for a bargain price.

Speaking on the transfer, he said: “There will be pressure here, for sure, but I like pressure. I also know about the famous players who have played for Newcastle United, like Alan Shearer who is a hero of mine. I hope I can play like him for this club. It will be an honour.”

Though he enjoyed a rich career in London, with Fulham, Mitrovic found that he ebbed and flowed between divisions and as such was unable to showcase his skills to their full extent, at the very highest level.

For that reason, Newcastle were probably right in cashing in on the Serbia international for a fee of £22m back in 2018, having failed to sustain a vein of prolificness at the club before moving on loan to the Cottagers and doing well. It was a no-brainer, in some respects, but Rafa Benitez’s decision pulled a high-class goalscorer away from the club at a time of great need.

The hulking centre-forward’s first campaign with Newcastle saw him score nine goals and add four assists in the Premier League, but he lost his growing Midas touch after United fell into the second tier that summer and was duly loaned out the season after.

Oh what could have been. Especially when considering that the 30-year-old actually carried the perfect properties to forge a successful career for himself at Newcastle. Indeed, according to ex-England manager Roy Hodgson, the frontman was “a bit like Alan Shearer” in that he offers a fierce strike and holds the ball up really well, with nice link-up play to boot.

Mitrovic’s efforts in England since leaving Newcastle have showcased enough to suggest that he could have played a long-term role at the club, had he been afforded more time to grow into his skin, had United’s conditions been less turbulent.

He had actually bagged 14 times across just 22 Premier League matches last year before signing for Al Hilal over in the Saudi Pro League for a reported £50m figure, forcing his way toward the riches of the Gulf.

Though the Serbian has left a career in England laden with goals, he has bobbed between the Premier League and Championship and might have been better off sticking with Newcastle. Had he done so, he could have been the starring talisman to guide the club toward an exciting new PIF era.

Given that Mitrovic’s sale saw the Magpies turn a profit after producing creditable results on Tyneside, his time at the club can’t go down as that of a severe blunder, but since he was once likened to Shearer, it would be fair to say that he didn’t reach his potential.

Not just Toney: Newcastle made a big error selling "Vinicius quality" star

Newcastle United could be left to rue this decision for some time.

McElhenney and Reynolds have enjoyed success at Wrexham since taking over the Welsh club and launching their famous 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary that has been watched by fans all over the globe. The Hollywood duo have taken the club out of the National League and into League One and harbour dreams of one day playing in the Premier League.

More investment will be needed if Wrexham are to continue their meteoric rise and ultimately play their way into the English top flight. Yet football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson, a professor of economics at Sheffield Hallam University, has explained why the duo won't be able to negotiate another lucrative television deal with popular streaming service Netflix.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Wilson told Slingo: "TV rights are collectively bargained on behalf of the division and then distributed accordingly. So clubs aren't allowed to go out and sign their own individual rights deals currently. It will be interesting to see how that changes, particularly with streaming services, use of social media, digital platforms and so on. But it's not something I think the league organisers want to give away just now and that's right, in my opinion, that's right from a competitive integrity perspective."

Everton flop left on a free in 2022, now he’s outscoring Calvert-Lewin

Everton will need to improve, and swiftly, if they are to avoid yet another Premier League relegation scrap this season.

Sean Dyche has seen his side lose all three of their league matches so far. With a clash against Aston Villa this weekend, the Goodison Park side will need to be excellent to secure a positive result.

Players such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin will need to step up in order to fire the club to their first win of the campaign.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s statistics this season

The striker has failed to score more than seven league goals over the previous three full seasons. Last term, he found the back of the net on just eight occasions across 38 matches.

While the Toffees have lost all their league matches, Calvert-Lewin does have a goal and an assist to his name thus far.

He has also created a big chance, averaging a shot per game while winning seven total duels per game in the top flight. Some more of this in the coming weeks could perhaps see the club finally gain their first points.

Dyche doesn’t have too many options to call upon, that’s for sure. There is a player who left Everton in December 2022 currently starring for his club side, while even outscoring Calvert-Lewin in the process…

What Salomon Rondon has done after leaving Everton

The Venezuelan centre-forward signed for the club in the summer of 2021, going on to score just three goals that term as the club narrowly escaped relegation.

He left Goodison in December 2022 after terminating his contract, failing to make an impression during his spell at the club. Since then, however, the veteran striker has been in excellent form.

35 appearances for River Plate yielded ten goals, but it is for his current team where he really hit the ground running.

Rondon played 21 league matches for Pachuca during 2023/24, scoring ten goals, while impressing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, netting nine times in just seven matches.

In the latter competition, the 34-year-old averaged 3.9 shots per game, averaged 1.7 key passes and succeeded with 60% of his dribble attempts, proving it wasn’t just in front of goal where he was effective.

His 20 goals in all competitions last season dwarfed the eight that Calvert-Lewin scored in the same time period.

Rondon failed to hit his previous Premier League highs during his spell on Merseyside, but there is no doubt he has proved his quality since leaving.

He even netted three goals in the 2024 Copa América, leading Venezuela to the quarter-finals for just the fifth time in their history, scoring against the likes of Mexico, Jamacia and Canada in the United States.

Calvert-Lewin is already off the mark this season, but if he wishes to drag the club away from the drop zone, he will need to vastly improve in the coming weeks.

Everton must regret selling £59m star who's been outscoring Gordon

He’s gone from strength to strength since leaving.

Arsenal chiefs prepared to use Nketiah in swap bid for "great" £70m target

After missing out on the Premier League title for a second season running last time out, Arsenal are now willing to show Eddie Nketiah the door to secure the signature of a £70m summer target.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners have already stolen the headlines once this week by finally agreeing on a deal to sign Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, as per Fabrizio Romano. The defender looks set to join after an excellent Serie A season followed by an impressive Euro 2024 campaign in an otherwise disappointing Italy side. With William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and likely soon Calafiori to call on, it could be argued that Mikel Arteta has the strongest backline to call on in the Premier League.

Yet, even with those three options to call on, those in North London are still reportedly looking to add another defensive reinforcement before the transfer window slams shut at the end of next month.

According to The Sunday Star, relayed by The Express, Arsenal chiefs are now prepared to use Nketiah in a swap deal to sign Marc Guehi, who has been valued at a hefty £70m by Crystal Palace this summer. The England international was arguably the Three Lions' most consistent player at the Euros as they stumbled made the final, where they suffered heartbreak against winners Spain.

Into the final two years of his current contract at Selhurst Park, Guehi may soon have quite the decision to make. The Euros did nothing but increase the interest in his signature and Arsenal may have the ideal bargaining chip in Nketiah.

"Great" Guehi would complete Arsenal defence

If Arsenal fans cast their minds back to the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, it was Saliba's injury which derailed their side's title charge as Rob Holding failed to fill the void left behind by the Frenchman. Now, however, with Calafiori soon on his way and reported interest in Guehi, the Gunners could start next season with four solid options left competing for a place in Arteta's side. Suddenly, an injury to Saliba wouldn't cause nearly as much panic as two seasons ago.

England defender Marc Guehi

Guehi rightly earned plenty of praise at the Euros, including from centre-back partner John Stones, who said via The Metro: "So good, so good. For him to come in, not having felt the feelings around tournament football before or these kind of games, all kinds of different emotions that come with it that you’ve never experienced before. He’s handled [it] so well, his performances have been great."

Meanwhile, the flip side of the deal would also suit all parties. Nketiah is far from Arteta's first-choice in Arsenal's current frontline, even amid their striker troubles, and a move to Selhurst Park could quickly hand him the Premier League starting spot he needs next season.

Peshawar Zalmi's Daren Sammy, Wahab Riaz given quarantine concession despite protocol breach

The two had breached Covid-19 protocols and were required to serve a three-day quarantine and return two negative tests

Umar Farooq21-Feb-2021The PCB has allowed Wahab Riaz and Daren Sammy to reintegrate with the Peshawar Zalmi team without completing the three-day quarantine period, as the board had announced earlier. The pair had been placed in quarantine following a Covid-19 protocol breach – the violation took place when the two met franchise owner Javed Afridi outside the team’s bio-security bubble on Friday. Riaz led the team in their season-opener against Lahore Qalandars on Sunday in Karachi.Sammy, the coach of the PSL team, and Riaz, the team’s captain, were required to undergo the quarantine as well as return two negative tests, taken 48 hours apart, within that timeframe before being allowed to be with their team-mates, in accordance with the board’s protocols.A PCB official told ESPNcricinfo that, following the breach on Friday, Covid-19 tests were conducted the same night and then on Saturday, and both sets were negative. The test on Saturday is believed to have been arranged by the franchise itself, rather than the PCB as should have been the case according to tournament protocols. On the basis of those two negatives, as well as another set of negative tests in the week preceding the start of the season, Peshawar lodged an appeal with the league’s Event Technical Committee to allow the two to be reintegrated. The committee accepted the appeal on Sunday morning.”A player and an official of the side have been allowed to enter the bio-secure bubble after their side’s appeal was accepted by the Event Technical Committee on Sunday morning. This means the two individuals can now integrate with their side and participate in team activities.”The ETC had reached the decision after reviewing test results of the three individuals involved in Friday’s bio-secure bubble breach. These results included tests conducted last week as well as fresh tests conducted on Saturday.”The team has offered its regrets to the PCB on Friday’s breach and has thanked the PSL ETC for accepting their appeal. They have further assured protocols will be followed and respected as everyone wants the PSL to succeed.”The issue of their reintegration had caused a delay in both Peshawar and Lahore leaving for the National Stadium for the game on Sunday morning. As part of security protocols, both teams travel together in the bus to the ground but their departure on Sunday was held up after the Lahore squad had boarded the bus with no sign of Peshawar. The delay is said to be down to the wait for the ETC’s final decision and it was only after the decision came that Peshawar were ready to travel. The breach came three days after the PCB had briefed players, support staff and match officials to “religiously follow” all Covid-19 protocols. Each PSL franchise has its own Covid-19 compliance officer, who is responsible for testing, implementation of protocols, sanitisation, and players’ temperature checks. The whole process is bring regulated by the event doctor. On Saturday, the PCB had said, “The PCB is disappointed that two members of one of the sides showed carelessness and violated the bio-secure bubble protocols by coming into contact with a person who was not part of the bubble. As reiterated previously, the health and safety of all individuals associated with Pakistan Super League 6 is of paramount importance to the PCB and the event.”All players, player support personnel, match officials and family members are once again reminded to diligently follow the PCB Covid-19 Protocols as the PCB will not allow anyone to affect the integrity and credibility of the tournament.”

Edu agrees to pay release clause to sign £86 million forward for Arsenal

Arsenal, led by sporting director Edu Gaspar, have agreed to pay £86 million to sign a very in-form forward for manager Mikel Arteta, according to a report this week.

Edu and Arteta targeting four key signings for Arsenal

According to some reports, Arsenal are targeting four key signings before the summer window deadline on August 30 – coming in the form of a new goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward.

"Special" Arsenal player agrees to leave as West Ham chase quick deal

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 18, 2024

As talks remain ongoing over a deal for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, as widely reported, a large section of supporters are especially keen to see a talismanic new striker come through the door at London Colney.

A goalscoring out-and-out centre-forward has long been seen by many critics as the final missing piece of Arteta's jigsaw. Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Brentford star Ivan Toney to fill the role last summer, but murmurs of a move for the England international have since cooled.

While their fondness for Toney appears to have waned, the north Londoners are still believed to be in the market for a new striker if the right opportunity presents itself.

Arteta is rumoured to be a fan of Ajax striker Brian Brobbey as a possible alternative to Gabriel Jesus, while more marquee options like Napoli star Victor Osimhen have been mentioned in parts as well.

Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz bagged a brilliant 51 goals between them in all competitions last season, but Arteta apparently wants a striking partner for Havertz going forward next season.

Arsenal made a good proposal to RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko to fill the role earlier this window, but Edu and co were met with a swift rejection as the Slovenia international chose to stay in the Bundesliga and further his development at his current club.

There are other opportunities for Arsenal in the market, but they may have to invest heavily, with an interesting report now claiming they're willing to do just that.

Arsenal agree to pay £86 million to sign Viktor Gyokeres

As per Leonino, via Standard Sport [17/07/2024, 07:00], Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres remains on Arsenal's wanted list after being heavily linked earlier this year.

It is now claimed that Arsenal have agreed to pay Sporting £86 million to sign Gyokeres, which is believed to be the value of his release clause. The Swede, called "unplayable" by former Coventry City teammate Maxime Biamou, scored a phenomenal 43 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions last season.

Gyokeres bagged a further 15 assists as well, totalling 58 goal contributions over what was a truly exceptional debut season in Portugal. There is a growing clamor for his services as a result, and it will be interesting to see if this report comes to fruition as Edu looks to end the club's long search for a new vocal point up front.
