Waqar not satisfied despite series win

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has expressed concern at the way his side stumbled during their chases in both Twenty20s against Zimbabwe in Lahore, even though they emerged with victories in both games

Umar Farooq25-May-2015Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has expressed concern at the way his side stumbled during their chases in both Twenty20s against Zimbabwe in Lahore, even though they emerged with victories in both games. The Pakistani bowlers conceded over 170 runs twice and despite a solid chase from the top order had to crawl hard to make it. In the first match on Friday their pursuit of 173 was threatened by the loss of five quick wickets and on Sunday Pakistan won by just two wickets with two balls spares.”We were fifth (in the rankings) and remained fifth,” Waqar said after the second win. “We were expecting that we would win this but never thought of such tight matches. We might have won but without the sense of jubilation. We are a better team than this. We actually have to improve a lot and the middle order and should have to take responsibility, so I can say that it didn’t delight me.”A win is a win and I am proud of my boys but definitely there are quite a few loopholes which we have to fix, but overall if you ask honestly I am not satisfied because we are better than this and should have performed well and won it more convincingly.”Mohammad Sami, who surprisingly returned to the national side from nowhere and was making yet another comeback, wavered with his line and length and collected 3 for 36 and 1 for 38 in two games. “In Twenty20 cricket it happens and you got to understand that the Lahore pitch was always flat and it’s not easy to bowl on it,” Waqar said. “But indeed we gave away a lot of runs in both matches, however the good thing was that we fielded well, but if you want to challenge other teams we have to do a lot and get better in many other departments.”Sami should be given more time and any bowler should be given ample time to get settled. I think he bowled relatively well from the previously match. One over might have gone badly but it happens in the slog overs, but overall he started well. Looking forward in Twenty20 cricket I think the role of both (Sami and Malik) important as in middle order I still feel it’s tough to over-rely on youngsters.”In the end, though, Pakistan swept the series, a win that marked the return of international cricket in Pakistan after six years of isolation. “These two matches obviously carried some weight as the way the crowd came in to support us it was just outstanding,” Waqar said. “It was a great response and nothing was hidden we all saw that, so has the entire world. It has cast a positive effect on the sovereignty of the country and gave out a positive message to the other countries. So I am proud of the nation, proud of the government and the crowd who came for us.”Zimbabwean allrounder Sean Williams said his team were short of runs but taking a lot of positives. “Obviously they were a much stronger side than us,” he said. “I won’t say I am satisfied from today’s game but there are a lot of positives taken from these last two games.”I feel we were short of runs in both innings but our fielding and discipline in the bowling haven’t been good. The first game was with no extras, the second we had extras, dropped catches and in the field things were going wrong. Obviously taking catches you win matches and what happened today was that we put down three catches … and smaller things makes a difference at the end.”

Derbyshire latest in limbo with Guptill call up

Derbyshire are the latest county to suffer at the hands of international selectors with Martin Guptill recalled to the New Zealand Test squad. Guptill was due to be Derbyshire’s overseas player for the first two months of the season.

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Apr-2015Derbyshire are the latest county to suffer at the hands of international selectors with Martin Guptill recalled to the New Zealand Test squad. Guptill was due to be Derbyshire’s overseas player for the first two months of the season.Middlesex and Lancashire were forced to rethink their own plans for overseas players earlier this week with Adam Voges and Peter Siddle picked for Australia Test duty and now Derbyshire have their own conundrum to solve.Guptill was due to be at Derbyshire until the one-day leg of New Zealand’s tour of England begins at the start of June. But, with the first red-ball tour match starting on May 8, Guptill is now only available for three Championship matches.”We have obviously prepared a number of additional options in anticipation of Martin’s early departure,” Graeme Welch, Derbyshire elite performance director, told . “We will now look to put the alternative plans into place as we aim for strong starts in both the LV= County Championship and NatWest T20 Blast competitions.”One additional option would be to get Tillakaratne Dilshan to Derby earlier than planned. He was scheduled to replace Guptill in June but may be available sooner. Sri Lanka have no cricket scheduled and Dilshan did not get bought in the IPL auction. But Dilshan was bought by Guyana Amazon Warriors for the Caribbean Premier League, which runs from July 11 to August 16. He will return to Derbyshire following the CPL but the initial task for Graeme Welch, Derbyshire elite performance director, was to find a stopgap for Dilshan’s CPL absence.”We will have to look at the budget, of course, but we do hope to find someone to come in for the middle part of the season,” Welch said. “New Zealand and Australia are on tour here next summer and if we could find someone who wants to stay on a bit longer and play some county cricket that would be ideal. We’ll see who’s available but we can afford to wait a little now with the signings we’ve made.”Derbyshire have potential to press for promotion from Division Two and begin their campaign at home to Lancashire on April 19.

Williams calls for Zimbabwe top order to tighten up

Sean Williams, Zimbabwe’s top run-scorer in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa, has pleaded with his top-order to take greater responsibility and put higher prices on their wickets. Zimbabwe’s top four have posted 120 runs among them across the two matches, just 14 more than Williams has scored himself in two innings, and the No. 5 batsman wants them to leave him less of a rebuilding job to do and more of a platform.”It’s the second game I’ve come in the 12th over. The guys are a little bit loose upfront,” Williams said. “It is a little bit upsetting because we played against Pakistan, who to me have got a really serious bowling attack, and we batted really well against them. Those guys are serious bowlers.”Williams is harking back to a year ago when Zimbabwe posted two totals of over 200 against an attack that has been hailed for its variety and managed one victory in a series they ultimately lost. Defeats aside, Zimbabwe had better returns from the likes of Brendan Taylor, Hamilton Masakadza and Vusi Sibanda, who recorded a fifty each. He was expecting similar from his team-mates this time, especially against what he stopped short of saying was a less challenging attack to face.”Now, against the South Africans, no disrespect to them but the Pakistan attack are really good and on a wicket like this, I feel chasing 250 against the South Africans is a game that we can say we clearly lost ourselves,” Williams said.Since that series, Zimbabwe have only played four ODIs against Afghanistan and an extended period without internationals in that format may be one reason the top order is floundering. Another could be the urgency to get off to quick starts, which Williams cautioned against, but he clarified that neither a lack of net sessions nor the conditions should be working against Zimbabwe.”It can’t be training or anything because the guys are training really hard at the moment. I don’t know whether its application or value of wickets. I’m not sure what’s going on. Maybe the guys just need to bat more for time rather than trying to score too many runs upfront,” he said. “Taking pace out of the wicket is more for our advantage to take it away from the South African batsman, because that’s what they want. They want the pace coming on. And we don’t want to be bombarded with bouncers and short, quick stuff.”South Africa know that and have worked to exploit it despite an absence of pace or bounce. “We picked up a few weak areas among their top order. In the Test matches they didn’t play the short ball that badly but I picked it up in the ODIs that it’s definitely an area where we can expose them a little bit,” AB de Villiers said.Williams was the one batsman who dealt with a barrage from Kyle Abbot and Ryan McLaren judiciously. He left most of the short balls sent his way but pounced on a few of them and combined aggression with good placement, even if it was only for a single. “I just felt that we weren’t scoring enough runs and we weren’t rotating the strike and I thought rather than just lying down and dying, I would try and keep the momentum going and try and score runs,” he said. “It didn’t work out.”At least not the way he would have wanted it too. Williams has played 64 ODIs since February 2005 and this is among his more consistent runs. He has scored three fifties in his last six matches and one 49 but a maiden century has evaded him. That’s what he is after in the next few weeks.”I feel like I am in form. A fifty is always nice to get but a hundred is even nicer to get. I am still pretty upset that I haven’t managed to press on. I got fifty the other day and then threw it away straightaway. I got quite a bad ball and hit it straight up in the air,” he said, referring to the short, wide Imran Tahir delivery he cut straight to point. Given the performances of the top order so far, Williams may yet get his opportunity to convert a start into a three-figure milestone.

– (Arão) Faz as duas funções.

Mumbai prevail in heated contest

A calculated charge from Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard amid indisciplined bowling from Royal Challengers Bangalore set up Mumbai Indians’ victory

The Report by Abhishek Purohit06-May-2014

Hattangadi: Pollard, Starc must be punished

A calculated charge from Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard amid indisciplined bowling from Royal Challengers Bangalore set up Mumbai Indians’ victory, their second on the trot at home. Rohit and Pollard came together at 84 for 4 in the tenth over and accelerated late to add 97 in the next ten. Combined with 25 extras, including 12 wides, it was well beyond Royal Challengers’ reach, though they had reached 94 for 1 in the tenth over. Harbhajan Singh then claimed Chris Gayle for 38, and Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers went soon after as the visitors’ challenge melted away. With one side of the ground smaller than the other, and a furiously quick outfield, both sides wanted to chase, and Royal Challengers did. Mumbai Indians’ top order of Ben Dunk, CM Gautam and Ambati Rayudu could not really get going on a pitch with pace and bounce, but the numerous extras served up by the Royal Challengers quick bowlers ensured the run-rate stayed reasonably high. The visitors hit back with quick wickets as the halfway mark of the innings approached, when Pollard joined Rohit.Rohit Sharma accelerated to hit an unbeaten 59 off 35•BCCIWith only Aditya Tare and the bowlers to come, the pair was forced to play cautiously for some time. The first five overs of the partnership produced only 29, despite some poor fielding. With about six overs left, Rohit and Pollard gradually opened up. Amid throwing his bat at Mitchell Starc in an ugly flare-up, Pollard contributed 43 off 31.Rohit cut loose in the penultimate over bowled by Varun Aaron. A couple of top-edges flew fine for six, there was a straight hit for four and a sliced six over deep cover as 24 came off the over. Rohit lofted Starc for four over extra cover off the last ball of the innings to surge to 59 off 35 as Mumbai Indians ended on 187 for 5.Gayle and Parthiv Patel responded with an opening stand of 53 in five overs. Parthiv did the early running before Gayle took Pawan Suyal for four successive boundaries in the third over. Rohit turned to Harbhajan, and after a quiet opening over, the offspinner had Parthiv bowled on the slog-sweep off the first ball of his second.Gayle wasn’t done yet. He swung Harbhajan for consecutive boundaries in the same over. Rohit persisted with Harbhajan, who sent down a tight third over. Harbhajan was given a fourth on the trot, the first four balls of which went for 12. Gayle attempted a slog-sweep off the fifth, missed and was bowled for 38 off 24.In walked de Villiers and calmly reverse-paddled Harbhajan first ball for four. When Mumbai Indians reprieved both batsmen in the space of four deliveries, it seemed the chances could cost them. Royal Challengers needed 72 off the last eight with Kohli and de Villiers looking good. However, de Villiers was bowled in the 13th over, missing after having backed too far across to Jasprit Bumrah. Kohli swatted Suyal straight to long-off in the next over. The asking-rate climbed rapidly now. Pollard ran out Yuvraj Singh, and though Rilee Rossouw tried, Royal Challengers had ceded too much ground with all those extras.

'Unanimous' SLC backs ICC revamp

Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee has made a unanimous decision to support the governance, finance and FTP changes in the ICC at its meeting on February 17

Sa'adi Thawfeeq18-Feb-2014Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee has made a unanimous decision to support the governance, finance and FTP changes in the ICC, which were proposed by the BCCI, ECB and CA, at its meeting on February 17. SLC had refrained from voting on the revised proposals at the ICC Board meeting in Singapore, saying it needed more time to discuss them.”The Executive Committee met today at SLC headquarters to converse regarding the revised resolutions forwarded by the ICC at the ICC Board meeting held on February 8 in Singapore,” the SLC said. “Subsequent to the committee members assessing the revised resolutions in detail, all members were satisfied with the amendments made in the areas of governance and competition models and thus unanimously decided to support the paper.”There had been fears that Sri Lanka might get isolated by India, England and Australia because they did not support the proposals straightaway in Singapore, but SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga allayed them.”Since we have been very clear and precise in our communications they are respecting us,” Ranatunga said. “They all respect our views and we have a better understanding among each other.”Ranatunga said that once the proposals were passed at the ICC’s annual meeting in June there will be no FTP and only bilateral agreements between countries. “So we need to understand the importance of having tours with India, England and Australia.”He said that for the next seven years Sri Lanka were due to get an income of $60 million from bilateral tours, and out of this figure, one Indian tour for one month would bring $28m, one England tour $12m and one Australian tour $7-8m.”When you calculate, a series with these three countries will bring us a revenue of $47-48m. If we are going to object to their proposals our cricket is going to suffer,” Ranatunga said. “People who talk about principles and all that will not give us the money. We have to make our money from these tours.”When any other country comes for a full tour we bear the same cost to host them but the returns are very small compared to the other three countries.”India is due to tour Sri Lanka in 2017 amd Ranatunga was hopeful that the FTP drawn up till 2018 will not be affected.”SLC is confident that they can go ahead with the tours they have planned so far. We are in the process of negotiating for more tours with other countries.”

O jogo

Nino Paraíba recebeu sozinho, olhou e soltou a bomba, 2 a 0.

Coles joins Hampshire on loan

Matt Coles, the England Lions allrounder, has joined Hampshire on loan until the end of the season from Kent, where he has refused to sign a new contract.Coles, a right-handed seam-bowler and left handed batsman, will be available for Hampshire’s County Championship match against Lancashire on Wednesday and will hope to impress and attract a contract. He becomes a free agent in October.23-year-old Coles has taken 133 first-class wickets at 30.67 and also has a first-class century to his name, made against Yorkshire at Headingly at the start of the 2012 season. The campaign proved fruitful for Coles, with 52 wickets at 22.03 in the County Championship earning him a call-up for England Lions’ tour of Australia in February 2013.But Coles’ form reflected the struggles of the whole squad. He took only two wickets in three matches as the Lions went winless in their seven completed matches. Worse for Coles, he was sent home before the end of the tour for a breach of discipline, along with Durham allrounder Ben Stokes. Both players have begun rebuilding their reputations but Coles felt he needed a move away from Canterbury, saying at the time: “I feel now is the right time for me to move on in pursuit of my medium and long term career ambitions.”On his move to the Ageas Bowl, Coles said: “I’m delighted to be joining Hampshire for the remainder of the 2013 season. I have played against and alongside many of the guys in the team and look forward to a very productive time at The Ageas Bowl.”Hampshire have work to do if they are to challenge for promotion in Division Two of the County Championship. They currently sit 51 points behind second-placed Northamptonshire with five games to play but they do have a game in hand and will play Northants in the third-last round of matches.

Ray Price retires from international cricket

Ray Price, the Zimbabwe left-arm spinner, has retired from international cricket

Liam Brickhill at the Harare Sports Club28-Jul-2013Ray Price, the Zimbabwe left-arm spinner, has retired from international cricket. Price, 37, was included in Zimbabwe’s squad for their ongoing one-day series against India but won’t be travelling with the team to Bulawayo, the venue for the last two games. It was widely suspected that this series would be Price’s last for Zimbabwe, but with national contracts expiring after India’s visit, he has decided to call time on his career mid-series. “I was going to wait until my contract expired to call it a day but, yes, I’ve decided to retire from international cricket,” Price told ESPNcricinfo. “I won’t be going with the guys to Bulawayo. I’m retired.”There had been some confusion over Price’s place in the squad before the series because he wasn’t named in the initial list, but coach Andy Waller insisted that he had always been part of the team. Price was ever present during Zimbabwe’s net sessions in the lead-up to the India series, and it had been thought that he would be given a chance to bid farewell with one final match. That was not to be, however, and he will finish with exactly 100 wickets in 102 ODIs, to go with his 80 dismissals in 22 Tests and 13 scalps in 16 Twenty20 internationals.”Pricey’s called it a day,” Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor said. “If he was going to play it was going to be here in Harare. We’re going to miss his experience, but in saying that it does give our young spinners who are coming through a great opportunity.”Price’s career straddled two distinct eras in Zimbabwean cricket. He debuted as a 23-year old in the third Test of the series against Sri Lanka at Harare Sports Club in 1999, but just as he established himself in the national side he threw in his lot with Heath Streak and the rebel cricketers and found himself ostracised. He left Zimbabwe for England and spent three and a half seasons with Worcestershire. His refusal of a new county contract in 2007 surprised many, and in November of that year he came out of exile and returned to Zimbabwe in the series against West Indies. Having left as something of a fringe player – particularly in one-day cricket – Price quickly re-established himself as a canny and economical bowler in ODIs.In 2009, he picked up 44 wickets at 20.61 and ascended to second in the ICC ODI rankings for bowlers. He remained Zimbabwe’s senior bowler for several years, and was their leading performer at the 2011 World Cup in India with nine wickets at 18.77. His last match for Zimbabwe was the Bridgetown Test against West Indies in March this year, in which he took just one wicket as the team suffered a heavy defeat. As important as his bowling was the spirit Price brought to a team struggling to find its way after all the upheavals in Zimbabwean cricket. A fierce adversary, Price bowled left-arm spin with the attitude of a fast bowler, refusing to back down no matter who the opposition and helping instill some backbone in the side.”He’s a hell of a competitor,” Taylor said. “He’s a guy that plays with his heart on his sleeve. He leaves nothing out on the field, he’ll give you everything and he’s a real team man. Unfortunately age is not on his side anymore, and he’s moving on with his family.”We’ll miss him, but I’m sure he’ll still be in the picture with our young spinners coming through and I’m sure he’ll always be contributing somewhere along the line.”Though he will no longer be part of the national side, Price will still be a regular at Harare Sports Club. He runs the sports equipment shop at the ground, and will divide his time between the shop, his family and one of his favourite pursuits: fishing.
