Crystal Palace linked with Claudio Gomes

Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Claudio Gomes as Patrick Vieira begins to make his mark in south London.

What’s the story?

According to 90min.com, the 20-year-old has attracted the attention of the Eagles, who could be tempted to pursue a loan move for the Frenchman over the coming months.

The report claimed that Palace may decide to fill up their Premier League loan quota with a handful of Arsenal or City players this summer, and Gomes is a prime candidate.

Parish must sanction Palace swoop for Gomes

It’s set to be an intriguing summer at Selhurst Park as Vieira oversees a major overhaul of the first team squad.

Several key figures have departed the capital club following the expiration of their contracts last month, leaving Palace threadbare in multiple positions.

The former Nice manager will have to bolster his ranks on a shoestring budget due to the financial impact of the ongoing pandemic, which means that astute loan signings could be vitally important.

Therefore, chairman Steve Parish must sanction a swoop for Gomes over the coming months in order to provide Vieira with the tools he requires to succeed at Selhurst Park.

Although he lack experience in senior football, the youngster comes with an enviable pedigree and was lauded by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola back in 2018.

When asked about Gomes’ contribution in training, the Spaniard said: “He has been so good, so good,”

When questioned on whether the youngster would be a part of City’s first team squad the following season, Guardiola added: “My opinion is that at that age you have to play. You need minutes, if not with us, then with the second team.

“But it could be like what happened with Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz – he could stay with us because from what we have seen in these days, the impression is good, so good.”

Gomes has found opportunities hard to come by in the Manchester City first team, making just three appearances in the domestic cups, two of those coming in the 2018/19 campaign.

However, he could be a valuable addition to Palace’s ranks, replacing the likes of James McCarthy while allowing Vieira to focus his resources on other positions.

Kiko Casilla set for Leeds exit

Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is reportedly on the verge of joining La Liga side Elche on a season-long loan deal this summer.

The Lowdown: Casilla plays second fiddle

The Whites had a number of standout performers last season, with Illan Meslier outstanding between the sticks throughout the campaign. The young Frenchman’s form saw Casilla deemed almost surplus to requirements, however, with the 34-year-old limited to just three Premier League appearances.

A move away from Leeds this summer appears to make sense and it looks as though that will happen imminently, despite director of football Victor Orta once claiming that he was ‘very proud’ of the Spaniard.

The Latest: Spaniard set for loan move

According to Football Insider, Casilla is on the verge of returning to his homeland and joining Elche on a season-long loan.

A move is expected to be completed ‘in the coming days’, with Marcelo Bielsa then looking for a replacement backup to Meslier ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-8/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Right decision for all parties

It makes perfect sense for Casilla to part ways with Leeds, considering his lack of playing time at Elland Road recently. At 34, the once-capped Spain international is still at an age where he can be a regular elsewhere, so it benefits everybody for the Spaniard to enjoy a fresh challenge this summer.

Bielsa now just needs to make sure he has an able deputy for Meslier brought in, should Leeds’ first-choice ‘keeper pick up an injury next season or suffer a slump in form.

Noel Whelan urges Tottenham to sign Pjanic

Noel Whelan has offered his verdict on Tottenham’s reported pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic…

What’s the talk?

The one-time Premier League forward has suggested that the Lilywhites could land an upgrade on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg by bringing the 31-year-old to the club this summer.

Spurs are reportedly interested in a potential deal to bring the Bosnia international to north London ahead of next season, with Fabio Paratici exploring the possibility of signing him on a season-long loan from Barcelona, and Whelan believes it would be a good piece of business.

He told Football Insider: “I don’t think the Tottenham fans are that overwhelmed by Hojbjerg right now.

“He needs a lot of work as well in pre-season. He’s done okay in the European Championships but Pjanic is a different level to me. That’s why he’s been at Barcelona.

“I think the biggest factor is experience. You need players you can trust. The experienced players that know how to control the game, dictate a game.

“Someone who’s going to be a presence on the training ground and in the changing room, to bring that calmness and that experience to a team.”

Once silenced Poch

Tottenham fans may well remember Pjanic from his performance against the club in the Champions League for Juventus in 2018. The Italian giants knocked Spurs out of the competition with a 2-1 win at Wembley to win 4-3 on aggregate.

The Bosnian played the full 90 minutes in the heart of Juventus’ midfield that night as he won one aerial battle and two tackles and completed 85% of his passes, helping to silence Mauricio Pochettino’s side by stopping their attacks through the middle and dictating the play for his own team.

Therefore, Spurs fans will already know that he has the quality to perform on the biggest stage and could adapt well to playing in the Premier League. As Whelan referenced, the 31-year-old is vastly experienced at the top level and has played more than 400 times across Serie A, Ligue 1 and La Liga for Lyon, Roma, Juventus and Barcelona throughout his career.

His technical quality is not in doubt, with former Roma coach Rudi Garcia once hailing the genius of Pjanic over a dead-ball after the Bosnian scored a free-kick in the Serie A, highlighting his ability on the ball.

Garcia said: “I am very happy for Adem Ljajic, and I knew at the break we’d probably struggle on set plays. Other than those, we weren’t really allowing any chances.

“How did we resolve the situation? Gave Pjanic the ball and watched him score a genius free kick.”

The £18m-rated magician has an excellent career average WhoScored rating of 7.13, a score no Tottenham midfielder was able to get near in the Premier League last season. Attacking trio Heung-Min Son, Harry Kane and Gareth Bale were the only players who achieved a higher rating throughout the entire squad.

This suggests that Pjanic could be a brilliant addition to Tottenham’s squad and that is why Paratici must sanction a loan swoop for the Barcelona man.

Celtic: Bristol City open talks with Hoops target Douglas

Bristol City appear to have moved ahead of Celtic in the race to sign Leeds United left-back Barry Douglas after opening talks with the player, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Hoops links

The Hoops were name-checked with an interest in the 31-year-old earlier this month by the Lancashire Telegraph.

Rivals Rangers were also credited with an interest in the full-back, whose Elland Road deal expires in a matter of weeks.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa called Douglas an ‘impeccable professional’ when he moved to Ewood Park on loan last season, with the Scot going on to make 31 appearances under Tony Mowbray.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-5/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Source shares update

Football Insider ran a story on Douglas on Tuesday morning after being informed by a recruitment source.

They claimed that Bristol City have opened talks with Douglas, who also has interest from Turkey and the United States.

The player’s wish is to remain in England, so it seems as if a potential move to Celtic Park has taken a hit.

The Verdict: Postecoglou could do with a left-back

Diego Laxalt returned to AC Milan following his loan spell at Parkhead last month, so new boss Ange Postecoglou could do with a left-back addition this summer.

It appears as if that may not be Douglas following the latest update, with Greg Taylor the only left-back on the books at Celtic Park at this moment in time.

If Postecoglou is after a left-back who is soon to be available for nothing, he could look at fellow Leeds man Ezgjan Alioski, Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand or even Liverpool youngster Yasser Larouci, with the trio just three left-backs at English sides who could be free agents soon.

NUL tables take shape after fresh round of games

The Norwich Union League tables are beginning to take shape after another round of exciting games has reached a conclusion

The Norwich Union League tables are beginning to take shape after another round of exciting games has reached a conclusion. With wins for high-flying Warwickshire Bears and Worcestershire Royals the Division One trophy may well be heading for the Midlands. But Kent Spitfires kept up the pressure with victory over Notts Outlaws, while Glamorgan Dragons are quietly confident that they can take the trophy West.Somerset Sabres cantered to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Leicestershire Foxes at Bath thanks to an intelligent all-round performance from Keith Parsons.Parsons followed up his three wickets with a robust half-century as his side clinched their first Norwich Union League victory of the season. He was well supported by stand-in captain Mike Burns after Leicestershire Foxes had been dismissed for just 147, despite a fluent 62 from Trevor Ward.Elsewhere Warwickshire Bears struggled with the bat against Yorkshire Phoenix, but still completed the victory that keeps them top of the table in a rain-affected contest. Only Dougie Brown could pass 20 for the visitors, as the hosts England-quartet of bowlers, Silverwood, White, Dawson and Sidebottom struck with two wickets apiece. But with Shaun Pollock in your side most totals are defendable. The South Africa captain won the NUL Player of the Month award for May, and made a bid for the June award with the wickets of Phoenix’s top three to place the pressure firmly back on the shoulders of the chasing team.Phoenix stumbled to 111-8, and it took a stand of 50 for the ninth wicket between Simon Katich – who was left stranded on 39 not out – and Tim Bresnan to take them close to the target, before they eventually fell 14 runs short.Worcestershire Royals kept up their pressure at the top of the table with a 166-run victory over Durham Dynamos. Royals were indebted to a fine 83 from Ben Smith as they ran up a formidable total of 265, but their unlikely hero was part-time bowler David Leatherdale. Leatherdale produced career-best figures of 5-9 as the Dynamos fell away to 99-8 in a rain-affected game.Rob Key must be close to an England call-up. The Kent Spitfires opener was in the runs again, with 114 from just 98 balls as he helped his team to a daunting total of 317 against Nottinghamshire Outlaws. Captain Matthew Fleming fell just short of a half century, but ensured a quick start for the visitors before Key took control in an innings studded with seven fours and four sixes. The Outlaws began their reply well, with Johnson in belligerent mood, but the run-rate proved too testing and their reply fell away despite a late assault from Paul Franks, and the Spitfires secured victory by 132 runs.In Division Two Gloucestershire Gladiators sustained their promotion hopes with a five-wicket win over Middlesex Crusaders at Bristol. Only Andy Strauss prospered for the Crusaders, hitting 65, as his side succumbed to Mark Alleyne’s medium pace (3-30) and Martyn Ball’s off-spin (3-13).Gladiators lost Barnett first ball in reply, but a 41-ball 60 (with 12 boundaries) from Ian Harvey made light of the target, with Alleyne seeing his side home with an unbeaten 32. The loss sees the Crusaders remain rock bottom of the second division.Kevin Dean produced another incisive performance for Derbyshire Scorpions against Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Derby. The left-arm swing bowler took 3-29, including the key scalp of Hussey, to reduce the visitors to 44-5. He was well supported by his skipper, Dominic Cork (2-20), but the other bowlers failed to keep the pressure on and allowed the Steelbacks – led by Penberthy with a patient 55 – back into the game and to a respectable total of 180.It almost proved enough for the Steelbacks as the Scorpions slipped to 88-7. But the Scorpions’ tail contains quite a sting, and the ex-Somerset pair of Jason Kerr and Luke Sutton added an unbroken 94 for the eighth wicket to produce a thrilling finish and an eventual three-wicket win for the hosts.Elsewhere there was a happy return for Adam Hollioake. The Surrey Lions’ captain took three wickets on his first appearance of the summer following the tragedy of his brother’s death, and witnessed his side secure a narrow victory over Hampshire Hawks. The Lions benefited from probing spells from Giddins (2-34) and, in particular, Martin Bicknell, who took 2-15 in nine overs as the hosts struggled to 178-8. Ian Ward provided the anchor for the Lions’ reply with 51, but when he was fifth man out with 58 still needed, it took sensible batting from Bicknell and a cameo from Ian Salisbury to see their side home in the final over.Half centuries from Darren Robinson, Andy Flower and – inevitably it seems – Ronnie Irani, saw Essex Eagles to victory over Lancashire Lightning at Ilford.Mark Chilton batted well for the visitors, with a fine 84, but he received scant support from his team-mates as they set a moderate target of 204. But that target seemed pretty remote when Peter Martin struck twice in his opening overs, before the Eagles batsmen knuckled down and got home with six overs to spare.

Dorival esboça provável time titular do Santos para estreia do Paulista

West Ham in Armstrong battle

According to a report by the Sun, West Ham United are in a three-way battle with Southampton and Norwich to sign Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong.

The Lowdown: Armstrong and the Hammers…

Links to Armstrong have been fairly consistent over the last few months, with ExWHUemployee saying back in March that he is on the shortlist of striker targets for GSB and co this summer (Patreon).

A recent report by the Lancashire Telegraph even explained how a Hammers enquiry has already been lodged for the player this summer.

The striking position is said to be a main priority for the club to strengthen this transfer window alongside the acquisition of a star centre-back and Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal (Claret & Hugh).

The Latest: West Ham in three-way tussle…

Bringing an update, the Sun now say that West Ham are still in contention for Armstrong but face a three-way battle to sign him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Norwich City and Southampton are the other interested parties tussling it out for the £25 million-rated Championship star.

Meanwhile, Armstrong’s current club are already weighing up a replacement in case he does leave Ewood Park.

Indeed, Rovers have apparently set their sights on Blackpool star Jerry Yates as his possible heir.

The Verdict: Perfect target?

Armstrong has earned many admirers from within the Championship and beyond.

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Warburton showered the 24-year-old with praise back in February, calling him an ‘outstanding’ and Premier League-level centre forward (West London Sport).

Meanwhile, pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor even told Football Insider that he would be a ‘perfect signing’ for West Ham specifically.

However, if Blackburn demand £25m for his signature, you could say that it would be a gamble despite his tremendous 29-goal haul in all competitions over 2020/2021 (Transfermarkt).

Armstrong has little experience in the English top flight and West Ham arguably need a forward who is proven at the very highest level and can score consistently against toughest opposition.

Therefore, despite his accolades and plaudits, we believe his price tag could still make him a risky purchase.

MCFC fans slam transfer report

Manchester City fans are far from happy after it was revealed Benjamin Mendy, Gabriel Jesus, Aymeric Laporte, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva could all be sold this summer.

The 2020/21 season is now officially over, and the Citizens can look back on a campaign which included extreme highs and of course one devastating low.

They came away with two trophies, winning the Premier League and the League Cup, but the one thing they want the most, the Champions League, slipped from their grasp as they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the final in Porto last Saturday.

Plans will already be underway to prepare for the new campaign, and there could be a number of players leaving the club. According to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, as many as six first-team regulars could be moved on this summer.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform the share their thoughts.
