Celtic have started the year as they ended it – in inconsistent form.

This has been a diabolical campaign for the Hoops and supporters won’t need reminding of the colossal points deficit to their biggest rivals.

The Bhoys have at least won three of their last four matches but their only defeat in that time came against St Mirren.

Coincidentally, that’s the opposition that Neil Lennon’s side face on Wednesday night. After beating Motherwell and Kilmarnock they will have newfound confidence but you never know what Celtic side are going to turn up at the moment.

So, with that in mind, what kind of XI will the manager look to field this evening?

We’re tipping Lennon to make two changes from the team that defeated Motherwell with two attacking changes made to the side.

The first replacement comes up top where it’s Leigh Griffiths – rather than Albian Ajeti – that partners Odsonne Edouard.

Ajeti has played a fair amount of football recently but after being restricted to a number of substitute appearances prior to that, presumably has quite weary legs due to a lack of match fitness. Consequently, we think that Lennon should rest the Swiss striker.

We expect Scott Brown to continue his resurgence in the middle of the park. Ismaila Soro appears to be fit to play despite a car crash that meant he was late for training earlier this week. Because of that, however, he should start on the bench. FFC previously spoke of how, if fit, Soro should be among the starters this evening. However, with his fitness now a concern, we reckon Lennon will go with Brown in front of the defence instead.

The second and final change is on the right-wing. We’re pushing David Turnbull into a more central area at the expense of Tom Rogic. The £16k-per-week earner hasn’t scored or assisted a goal in his last 12 outings.

Ryan Christie, despite his shoddy form, comes back into the team after returning from injury. He was only on the bench when Celtic lost to St Mirren last time out but has been a favourite of Lennon this term so we think that he’ll return immediately.

Many Liverpool fans are reacting to the latest update on Georginio Wijnaldum and his contract, following a tweet from Fabrizio Romano.

The Dutch midfielder was involved in the 4-0 thrashing of Wolves on Sunday night, and also scored a sensational goal in the match.

As reported by the Italian journalist, the Netherlands superstar spoke after the win about his contract negotiations, and he said: “I already said it in my previous interviews, I don’t speak about my contract situation, I speak about the games. The club should speak about my contract.”

These comments have seen a lot of Liverpool fans begging for the Reds to give him a new deal. He is clearly highly-rated by the manager, who recently spoke about him and said: “Gini is one of the best people I have ever met and he is one of the best players I’ve ever trained and he is an outstanding person so there is no issue, no issue at all.”

Hopefully an extension for the 30 year-old can be sorted sooner rather than later. With his contract expiring in the summer, he is allowed to open discussions with other sides from the January transfer window. He has been a key part of Liverpool’s recent Champions and Premier League title wins, so it is easy to see why many want him to stay.

Wijnaldum’s durability and fitness levels have also been crucial for Klopp during the Reds’ ongoing injury crisis, so it is no surprise to see fans flocking to Romano’s tweet to beg for a new deal.

And even though they kept their first clean sheet of the campaign, Furlong was particularly wasteful.

He lost possession a whopping 30 times, considering he was up against the exciting Dwight McNeil, this could have ended poorly for the Baggies whilst Furlong also landed just one accurate cross from seven attempts, committed one foul and made only 64% of his passes, via SofaScore.

On a different day, or against a more lethal player like Sadio Mane or Raheem Sterling, he’d have certainly been punished for his mistakes.

This was backed up by BirminghamLive’s review – they graded him a 6/10 and said: “McNeil had a lot of space down the left in the first half and Albion’s centre halves had to cut out crosses that came from the flank, but going forwards Furlong gave as good as he got. Deliveries were often disappointing.”

Furlong was dropped for the Southampton defeat but his performance here fails to prove why he should be trusted over O’Shea going into Monday’s tie with Brighton & Hove Albion.

He’s way more suited to playing as a wing-back, which this four-at-the-back system does not account for.

Tottenham Hotspur continued their newfound momentum by beating Newcastle United 3-1 at St James’ Park. 

Harry Kane’s two strikes took his tally to 201 goals in 350 games, with the majority of those for Tottenham (BBC).

Spurs are now enjoying an unbeaten run stretching back to the 1-0 win at home to Everton. Nevertheless, Noel Whelan has blasted full-backs Serge Aurier and Ben Davies for their “wasteful” performances on the wings.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker ripped into the defensive duo, suggesting Spurs are “missing a goalscoring opportunity without having that quality.”

Aurier and Davies have established themselves as Jose Mourinho’s first choice full-backs as they have started every game since the Premier League restart, winning four out of a possible seven games so far.

Son Heung-min opened the scoring before Kane added the extras to mark the first time Mourinho had won a Premier League game at St James’ Park.

The Ivorian’s scuffed clearance allowed Matt Ritchie to bury an equaliser, but Kane combined with Steven Bergwijn to keep Newcastle quiet.

Whelan told assistant editor Russell Edge “when you get into areas out wide where you’ve got a striker like that who’s fantastic in the air and can score all kinds of goals in the box, I think me as a striker would be tearing my hair out.

“We see it at Leeds at times, all that hard work and great work at times getting into the final third but with a wasteful ball. You’re missing a goalscoring opportunity without having that quality.

“That is somewhere that Tottenham are lacking – Aurier to me is not their solution.”

With all due respect, it seems Whelan has gone too far this time. Aurier started just two days after his younger brother Christopher was shot dead in Toulouse.

Although the 27-year-old was at fault for the error that led to Newcastle’s equaliser, he still made 3 clearances, completed 4 tackles, and finished the game with a pass accuracy rating of 85% (via SofaScore).

The ex-Paris Saint-Germain ace has played 31 games in the Premier League this season, scoring one goal, supplying five assists, making 1.1 key passes per game, averaging 2.8 tackles, and registering 2.6 clearances on average (stats provided by WhoScored).

Mourinho had been considering Gedson Fernandes, Oliver Skipp and Moussa Sissoko as possible alternatives in the event that Aurier could not play, but with so much at stake, the Ivory Coast captain showed he is a team player who is committed to the cause.

It might not have been his best performance of the season, but he still managed to play the full 90 minutes.

As a result, Spurs are now seventh in the table, a point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, with only two games remaining.

With everything he has been through in the past week, the fact he even played against the Magpies shows real courage and determination.

Chelsea have made another move across the transfer market chessboard as Marina Granovskaia opens talks with another major target.

A strong Premier League season in West London has come to a close and the splashing of the cash has already commenced. The Blues look set to push another big money deal through as Granovskaia turns her attention to Jan Oblak, according to Nico Schira (via Daily Star).

Frank Lampard is looking to strengthen his defensive line ahead of what looks to be a thrilling 2020/21 season. A goalkeeper has been outlined as one of the club’s priorities and Oblak has appeared high up the target list.

Atletico Madrid aren’t willing to give up the Slovenian easily and are adamant any interested club must pay his mammoth £108million release clause. However, money doesn’t seem to be an issue for the Blues, who have already signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, with an additional deal for Kai Havertz all but completed.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has returned the worst save percentage out of any other goalkeeper to feature 20 times in the Premier League this season (via Sky Sports). He also kept just eight clean sheets, which is less than the likes of Jordan Pickford and Ben Foster (via Premier League).

Chelsea bought Kepa two years ago for a world record fee of £71million (via BBC Sport), an amount that has yet to be matched or beaten. However, he certainly hasn’t lived up to his huge price tag and it seems Lampard has no intentions of allowing him another season in the net.

The former England international has proved he enjoys a project and it’s not up for debate that Chelsea are undergoing a very exciting transition. Bagging Oblak would see all eyes on the Blues ahead of next campaign and Lampard wouldn’t allow his new signings to disappoint.

With Granovskaia working her magic on the shot-stopper’s agent, Chelsea could be inching closer to shaking on a deal for a new record signing.
