Layton Stewart: Roberto Firmino's favourite Liverpool academy star

The 20-year-old striker made his senior debut for Jurgen Klopp's side in November, and has been in prolific form for the Under-21s this season

The timing is perfect, almost enough to draw suspicions of a set-up. Just as Layton Stewart is explaining his knack of scoring goals, and how he has previously been compared to the likes of Michael Owen and Fernando Torres during his Liverpool academy career, along comes another Reds striking great.

Robbie Fowler, sadly, declines GOAL’s invitation to join the poacher’s chat – he has a podcast to record – but his parting words say plenty about how Stewart is perceived within Liverpool.

“He doesn’t need my advice,” Fowler grins. “He’s doing well enough on his own…”

It’s a fair point, too. With 18 goals from only 20 appearances this season, Stewart is the academy’s leading scorer, and in November the 20-year-old, who grew up just a couple of miles from the AXA Training Centre, fulfilled a lifelong dream by making his debut for the Reds’ first-team.

Whatever the personable Scouser goes on to achieve, few feelings will top that, walking out at Anfield in front of 52,000 and leading the line for Jurgen Klopp’s side in a Carabao Cup tie against Derby County.

“Hard to describe,” he smiles, although in fairness to him, as with most things he does, he ends up having a pretty good go.

    The early days

Stewart grew up in Stockbridge Village, a short drive from Liverpool’s new Kirkby training ground and even closer to their former base at Melwood.

He was, in his own words, “always a mad red” but like Fowler, who famously grew up an Evertonian, he too had a brief flirtation with the city’s other club. “I actually played for Everton first,” he says, “but when I was seven I chose Liverpool, and that was that.”

Stewart’s group at Kirkby was a good one, featuring a host of players who are still with the club to this day.

“There was Tyler Morton, Maxi Woltman, Dom Corness, Tom Hill, James Norris came a bit later too,” he says. “We all went to school together at Rainhill, and we’re all still close now of course.”

    The rise

A natural goalscorer and a fiery, outgoing character, by the time he was 16, Stewart was being talked about as a potential first-teamer at Liverpool.

“Do you want a name to look out for?” Alex Inglethorpe, the Reds’ academy director, once asked GOAL at the end of an interview.“Layton Stewart. He can be anything he wants to be.”

In December 2019, Stewart was on the bench as, with Klopp’s first-team squad in Qatar for the Club World Cup, Liverpool were forced to select a virtual youth team for their Carabao Cup quarter-final at Aston Villa. Hill and Norris both played that night, as Neil Critchley’s side acquitted themselves well, but lost 5-0 to a Villa side featuring the likes of Ezri Konsa, Douglas Luiz and current Celtic star Jota.

An ankle injury denied him the chance to feature when, for different reasons, Liverpool again fielded a youth side for their FA Cup fourth-round replay against Shrewsbury at Anfield in February 2020, but he signed his first professional contract soon after, and at the end of that season was rewarded for his progress with a new, long-term deal.

    The agony

Stewart remembers the day it all changed for him. It was March 2021, and he was playing for Barry Lewtas’ Under-23s team in a Premier League 2 match against West Ham at Kirkby.

In the second half, he went to chase a ball over the top, collided with a Hammers defender and “felt something go” in his knee.

“I heard a horrible noise, so I knew I’d done something bad,” he says now, more than two years on. “I didn’t know at first where the pain was coming from. But then I realised it was my knee and I was like ‘oh no, what have I done?’

“My knee actually locked into a bent position. The physios were asking me to straighten it and I just couldn’t.”

The initial diagnosis was that Stewart had torn the meniscus in his right knee, a bad enough injury in itself. A second scan, however, would bring even worse news.

“It turned out I’d done everything I could have done in my knee,” Stewart says, ruefully. “I’d done the meniscus, the medial collateral ligament and the anterior cruciate ligament too.”

    The comeback

Still only 18, and with his progress firmly checked, Stewart set about getting his head around the recovery process.

“My mindset initially was ‘I’m going to smash it and be back ASAP’,” he says. “But the reality is much more difficult than you could imagine.

“I was in a bit of a mad place, because I’d been doing so well and then this had happened. It set me right back.

“And while I was doing my rehab, I was seeing a lot of lads getting their debuts. I was buzzing for them, don’t get me wrong, but of course there’s a part of you that thinks ‘that could have been me’ and that gets you down.”

Stewart credits Liverpool’s physios, Tony Jones, Paul Kelly and Scott McAuley, as well as Lewtas, with keeping him focused and away from the darker thoughts which can engulf an injured player, and admits that Hill, who suffered a similarly serious knee injury in August 2020, “must have been sick to death of the calls and texts” he received from his pal.

There was also, Stewart says, some welcome support from some of the Reds’ senior professionals.

“Ox [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain] was a big help,” he says. “He had the same injury, and when he found out what I’d done he came over and was always talking to me, making sure I was alright and making sure I was doing my work. Joe Gomez was the same, really good. I’ll never forget that, because it meant a lot to a young player.”

Mourinho records club's worst Premier League start

Manchester United have picked up 26 points after their first 17 league games this season under Jose Mourinho; their worst points haul in the top-flight at this stage since 1990-91 (also 26 points).

United also only won 176 Premier League points under the Portuguese; fewer than Manchester City (222), Tottenham Hotspur (202), Chelsea (200) and Liverpool (196) since August 2016.

    Humiliated by old rivals Liverpool

Opta only began recording shot data for the 2003-04 season, but in those 15 years, United have never faced as many shots (36) as they did against Liverpool in the 3-1 drubbing at Anfield in December.

The win for their long-term rivals put Liverpool 19 points clear of United, a record advantage for the Reds after the first 17 games of an English top-flight season.

  • Worst non-clean sheet run in over 45 years

David de Gea has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League in recent seasons, but his surprisingly poor form, as well as inconsistent defending in front of him, saw United go 13 consecutive games without a clean sheet in all competitions, their worst run since August 1971.

Furthermore, during this period from February to April 2019, they were kept scoreless on five occasions.

  • Five consecutive away defeats

United's away form in spring 2019 was their worst since March 1981, when Dave Sexton's Red Devils also lost five away games in a row in all competitions.

Solskjaer's away run included a 2-0 loss to Arsenal, two 2-1 defeats to Wolves in both league and FA Cup, as well as a 3-0 loss to Barcelona and then a 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Everton.

Experienced India should ride the flow – Kohli

India came to Mohali in November under threat of having a dud home season, having lost the T20I series and ODI series to South Africa. In Mohali, they found home comforts that took them to the No. 1 Test ranking, and gave this team in transition the reassurance that they are good enough. They come back to Mohali unsure again. This has been a World T20 where India have been cagey perhaps because of – or despite – their favoured conditions. They have stayed alive, which is definitely credit to them, against some really good bowling in two of their three matches, but they haven’t been able to play with the freedom they are known for. This is not too dissimilar to what happened in the World Cup in 2011, where they started as the favourites, slipped up against South Africa, got away with a tie against England, but turned it on when it really mattered. They did just enough, but they won the World Cup. They have been doing just enough here too, and they can still win this World T20. In 2011, just like now, India’s match against Australia started a string of three must-win matchesVirat Kohli recognises that India have been made to work hard, and cherishes the fight shown by his team to stay alive. “It is very difficult to be very consistent as a team in this format,” he said. “I think you need to come to terms with that. Sometimes you need character from a few people to get you over the line and that’s exactly what happened in the last game. Spinners bowled beautifully, then Hardik [Pandya] holding his nerve in the end was brilliant for us. All the things we needed to do in the end, we did, pulling the game back. That’s a big positive for us.”India also recognise a global tournament would tax them more than the Asia Cup and the earlier T20 matches since the start of 2016. “The World Cup is a very big tournament,” Kohli said. “Every team that plays, its skill levels are different from the other teams. In the Asia Cup, you need to focus only on three or four teams. In the World Cup, there are so many teams against whom you can play at any time, against whom you haven’t played the entire year. I think that is a challenge, how you adapt on the spot. Adaptability is very important.”What we did in the first game, our adaptability was not to the standards we have set, but in the last two games we have adapted very well. We could have been bowled out for 125 against Bangladesh, but we fought and put up a fighting total,” Kohli added. “Obviously teams will test you, this is international cricket. It is not the kind of cricket where, because you have the reputation and the players, you are guaranteed of success. Anyone can upset anyone else and we have respected that in the last two games, and that’s why we were able to pull those games back.”If we had relied only on our reputation and our confidence, we may not have been able to win those two games. We have looked at it as a humbling experience and the endeavour is to do the same things that we have been doing throughout the season, but you can’t execute [your plans] all the time. At that stage, you have to use your experience and accept the game as it is flowing and adjust accordingly, which as a team we try to do each single time.”There will be home comforts, though. The pitch might not be a raging turner, but it would be slow considering the square in Mohali has been used quite a bit over the last two weeks. Additionally, Sunday is the only the second double-header at the same venue during the Super 10s. The men will play on the same surface the Indian and West Indian women will get for their evening game in Mohali.Australia are not the most comfortable on used and slow pitches. They are also the team whom India whitewashed in a three-match T20I series not long ago. “If you look at how we have played this season, that [series] sort of was the catalyst for our consistent performances in this Twenty20 season so far,” Kohli said. “So obviously we can focus on the positive things that we did there against Australia, but we cannot take anything for granted. It’s a virtual quarter-final for us. We all know that, and it’s very important to stay in the moment, stay focussed on what we have to do. Why we were able to beat them in Australia is very important to remember. It’s not so much, ‘We have beaten them, so we can go out and do it again.’ It’s how we did it that we need to focus on.”Memories have been refreshed, questions about sledging and respect have been answered, final mistakes have been made. As they did in 2011, India need to find ways to win three matches; and they have maintained they don’t always need to win pretty. “If you hit a six 60 metres or 90 metres, you still get a six,” Kohli said.

Nepal beat Namibia; both on cusp of I-Cup & WCLC

Another half-century from captain Paras Khadka propelled Nepal to a three-wicket win over Namibia in Windhoek on Wednesday. The result puts both teams in a tie at the top of the WCL Division Two table at 3-1 with Namibia marginally ahead on net run rate. Khadka teamed with vice-captain Gyandendra Malla for a 58-run third-wicket partnership to put Nepal in control chasing a modest target of 143. Khadka fell for 64 off 56 with Nepal 17 runs off the target and a flurry of wickets fell late but Basant Regmi hit the winning boundary with 12.1 overs to spare. The relatively easy chase was set up by another solid bowling effort, vindicating Khadka’s decision after winning the toss to send Namibia in first. KC Karan and Sompal Kami reduced Namibia to 15 for 3 by the end of the sixth over. Raymond van Schoor provided the most resistance for Namibia with 28 off 80 balls but received little support. Fast bowler Karan backed up his five-wicket haul a day earlier against Canada with solid returns of 3 for 12.Nitish Kumar notched the tournament’s first century in a 111-run win for Canada over Uganda. The first List A century for the 20-year-old came off 106 balls with 10 fours and a six and eclipsed his previous List A best of 67. Kumar was part of two half-century stands with Rizwan Cheema (36) and Ruvindu Gunasekera (30) to give Canada a strong platform after winning the toss and batting. Captain Jimmy Hansra provided a late flourish with 63 not out off 54 balls to boost Canada up to an easily defendable 293 for 6.Seamer Cecil Pervez ripped through the Uganda top order with three wickets in the first nine overs before Phillimon Selowa countered back with a half-century. Offspinner Nikhil Dutta finally ended Selowa’s stay for 70 and burrowed through the rest of the Uganda middle order to finish with 4 for 52. Pervez came back late for one more wicket to finish with 4 for 23 and left-arm spinner Parth Desai finished off the tail as Uganda subsided for 182 in 42 overs.Netherlands bounced back strongly from a lopsided defeat on Tuesday to Namibia to post a five-wicket win over Kenya. The Dutch kept Kenya to 212 for 9 after winning the toss and opting to field first. Kenya got off to a solid start behind 43 from wicketkeeper Irfan Karim and 48 from Narendra Patel but the innings floundered after Karim’s dismissal in the 35th over at 130 for 4. Ahsan Malik helped keep the tail in check and finished with 3 for 27.Stephan Myburgh aided his side’s desperate bid to reduce their overall net run rate deficit with Nepal and Namibia by crashing 95 off 64 balls to open the chase. Captain Peter Borren picked up where Myburgh left off and produced a rapid burst to end unbeaten on 28 off 11 balls as Netherlands reached the target with 19.1 overs to spare to keep their chances of finishing in the top two alive. All teams have an off day on Thursday before the final day of the group stage on Friday in Windhoek. Nepal and Namibia both control their own destiny for promotion while Kenya and Uganda currently sit in the relegation zone and no longer have any chance at moving up.A win for Nepal over Kenya and the same for Namibia against Canada would clinch a berth for both teams into the 2015-2017 ICC Intercontinental Cup and World Cricket League Championship. Nepal can still clinch a spot in the top two even with a loss to Kenya if Namibia beats Canada and Uganda beats Netherlands. To move into the top two, Canada would not only need to beat Namibia but also would have to erase a 1.196 net run rate deficit with their opponent. Canada also trail Nepal by 0.857 on net run rate so a win coupled with a Nepal loss to Kenya and a more manageable overhaul of their deficit with Nepal could see Canada finish in the top two.Netherlands has a bigger net run rate deficit than Canada to make up on both Nepal and Namibia at 1.250 and 0.911 respectively. However, they face the weakest opponent in the tournament for their last match, Uganda, and have an outside chance of erasing that deficit but would need one of Nepal or Namibia to lose and then leapfrog that losing team plus Canada on net run rate to finish in the top two.
