Adaptable New Zealand bank on successful template

After reaching their second successive semi-final in a global event, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson stressed on the importance of ‘smart cricket’ to get them past a tricky opposition

We’ve shown an ability to adapt to conditions – Munro

They all say that you have to play the big matches as if it were just another game. New Zealand might have that covered through their captain Kane Williamson. At the best of the times he is understated and levelled, but when you see that a buzzing phone bothers him more than a question about the perceived lack of ruthlessness in the World Cup final, you know this team is taking it as just another game. When asked about “the time of their lives” in the World Cup last year, having come up short against “ruthless” Australians, and what lessons they took from there, Williamson said: “Australia are a very good cricket side. They beat us. That’s fine. That can happen in cricket.”From our perspective we want to keep improving as a unit. We are not looking too far down the track, of changing personalities or looking to make drastic changes. We just want to keep taking small steps forward as a team. Hope that brings a consistent improvement. Respect the game, you can win, you can lose. T20 is more fickle than any format. Go into the game, play fearless cricket, and play smart cricket as well.”Apart from fearless cricket, New Zealand have played a lot of canny cricket. Their selections, and success thereof in all four matches, have come as a surprise for others, but it is business as usual for Williamson and coach Mike Hesson. “I think in terms of my perspective and our coach they are not surprises to us,” Williamson said. “We are simply trying to pick horses for courses, our best side for the given conditions against the given opposition at that point of time. That certainly won’t change.”The success of New Zealand has been the readiness of replacements whenever they are called upon. Mitchell McClenaghan was called in at the last minute in Dharamsala against Australia, and he ended up as the Man of the Match. Tim Southee and Trent Boult, who have not played any game in this World T20, will be a chance here: David Willey has swung the ball in matches in Delhi. Williamson said he didn’t need to bother about that.”They’re very much ready to go,” Williamson said. “Like I said, we still haven’t decided on our side. We will be looking closely at the conditions and the history I suppose of what the wicket has produced and try and pick up a side.”It doesn’t rule out the importance of the two main spinners, though. “Our spinners have been brilliant on surfaces that have suited spin bowling,” Williamson said. “And perhaps the best track we played on in Mohali, they still played a big part. We’re not quite sure what to expect. A few games have been played on it [the Delhi pitch] recently.”A phone kept buzzing, Williamson kept looking at the media manager, and then he provided the most fun answer when asked about the amount of travel New Zealand have had to undertake in playing all their four league matches at different venues. In Dharamsala they got their first look of the pitch on the day of the match. By comparison England have played only in two venues, both of which are hosting semi-finals.”That’s great,” Williamson said. “We’ve been able to see more of India than most opposition sides. It’s one of those things. Surely it just happened by co-incidence? They guys embraced it, embraced the flights and enjoyed the variety of hotels.”

'Torcida do Fluminense ficará no lado direito do Maraca', diz Rubens Lopes

Five things New Zealand must do to win

1. Ignore all of the statsFor example:a. Australia have won 13 ODIs in a row at home, and 24 of their last 26. They have won their last six at the MCG, 10 of the last 12, and 28 out of 37 this millennium.b. Mitchell Starc could potentially end with the best set of tournament statistics by any bowler in a World Cup, thanks in large part to his 6 for 28 against New Zealand.c. Steven Smith has four hundreds and six fifties in 17 ODI innings this season.d. Australia have won three of the last four World Cup finals.e. In their five matches since losing to New Zealand in Auckland, Australia have scored 1470 runs, at an average of 50 runs per wicket and a scoring rate of 7.4 per over. In the whole tournament, only one team has scored more than 233 against them (Sri Lanka’s 312), and they have taken 69 wickets, at an average of 20 runs per wicket and striking once every 23 balls.f. 0% of this match will be physically played in Auckland. And many more. All not worth thinking about. And all worth not thinking about.Stats are like goldfish – you should not allow them to affect you once you walk on to a cricket field; and if they do, you are probably doing something wrong.2. Remember some of the statsFor example:a. New Zealand have had their opponents two wickets down within 10 overs in six of their eight matches; one of the exceptions was their win over Australia, in which they had to wait until the 14th over to strike for the second time, but then took seven more wickets inside nine overs. If they repeat this form, they will expose an out-of-form Michael Clarke, batting on an occasion that will be one of his defining moments.b. Of the 17 knockout stage rematches in World Cup history between teams who had met earlier in the tournament, the winner of the first game has won the second encounter on 14 occasions.c. According to the most recently published player rankings of 15 March, for whatever they are worth, New Zealand’s top seven batsmen have a higher collective score than Australia’s; and the five main New Zealand bowlers also score collectively higher than their opponents. Not by much in either case, but by a little. That might mean almost nothing, but it does mean slightly something.d. Since 1979, there have been three first-time finalists: India in 1983, Pakistan in 1992 and Sri Lanka in 1996. All have won their first final. Australia have played six finals. They have won the four they have played against teams which have previously appeared in a World Cup final (1987 v England, 1999 v Pakistan, 2003 v India, 2007 v Sri Lanka), and lost against the two first-time finalists they have faced (West Indies in 1975, Sri Lanka in 1996).e. Only two of this Australian team have beaten New Zealand at the MCG (Clarke and Mitchell Johnson, in 2007; even in victory, Clarke scored 9 off 20 balls, Johnson took 0 for 48 in 7 overs). Six of the New Zealand side have beaten Australia at this stadium, in 2009: Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Grant Elliott were all batting in the places they currently occupy (McCullum and Taylor made useful 40s, Elliott saw the chase home with 61 not out); Tim Southee opened the bowling, Daniel Vettori bowled ten tight overs.f. Slightly more than 0% of this match might have been psychologically played in Auckland.Other stats are also worth remembering. Some more relevant than others. These kind of stats should be lodged away in your mind before you walk on to the field, to be summoned as a source of reassurance in times of tension.New Zealand won the group-stage match in Auckland. 3. Imagine the looks on the Australian crowd’s faces should the home team loseWin or lose, New Zealand have made themselves national sporting heroes. Obviously, they will be even greater heroes if they win, but, nevertheless, they have achieved success that will not be forgotten. If Australia lose, they will have failed, and there will be some stroppy-looking supporters wearing “you guys have failed” faces. For New Zealand, it is as close to a no-lose situation as a World Cup final can be (which is, admittedly, not very close at all).Judging by the number of India fans around Melbourne in the last couple of days, there will be a substantial neutral contingent in the crowd, likely to back the Kiwis. And a fair number of Kiwis, certain to back the Kiwis. They will have support, representing their own country, and the large proportion of neutrals who have been entranced by their thrillingly attacking cricket, passionate support, and six-blasting nerve under pressure. In the unlikely event that the New Zealand players feel intimidated by the Australian crowd, they should imagine the entire population of their country, crammed into 50 MCGs, or 90 Eden Parks, all going, in Benaud’s words, “noisily berserk”. That might help.4. Do not panic if things go wrongUnless they go very wrong, for a prolonged period of the match, in which case panicking might be a sound strategic option. However, even if, say, McCullum, Guptill and Williamson fall early, or Boult and Southee fail to dislodge the potent but vulnerable Australian openers, they should take confidence from the fact that New Zealand’s campaign has been characterised by significant contributions from throughout the team. They began by scoring 331 against Sri Lanka, with a top score of 75 but six of the top seven reaching 29 (only the third time that had been done in a World Cup innings). They reached the final courtesy of five of the top six scoring 30 in the semi-final (the first instance of that happening in a World Cup knockout match since 1987). Four of their bowlers have taken at least 14 wickets (only two Australians have taken 10 or more, Starc (20) and Johnson (12)).New Zealand have a range of match-turners and match-winners with bat and ball.5. Sacrifice 100 head of oxen to ZeusNew Zealand need no divine intervention. They are good enough to win this final. They have formidable depth and firepower in batting, an in-form and well-balanced bowling attack, athleticism and brilliance in the field, and an excellent captain unafraid to attack.Their only obstacle is that their opponents are also good enough to win this final, and also possess those same qualities. So whatever marginal, mystical ‘one-per-centers’ that the Kiwis can apply could prove crucial. I have no idea whether Zeus was as receptive to mass animal sacrifices as the Ancient Greeks thought he was, nor is anyone entirely sure what the former Mount Olympus supremo is up to these days, but a cheeky pre-match ritual slaying of agricultural beasts could not possibly do any harm in the circumstances, and the noise, confusion and media attention might even distract the Australians from the cricketing task in hand.ZALTZMAN MICROPREDICTION: Australia by 53 runs, and/or 5 wickets with 3.3 overs to spare.

New Zealand’s six domestic teams have finalised their 15-man squads for next summer, with no player movements of note following the first round of contracts last month. Auckland added two players to their contract list and the other teams added one, and every case featured a promotion of a player from within their own system rather than recruiting from another side.Wicketkeeper-batsman Michael Guptill-Bunce was added to Auckland’s list having last played for them in February 2013, and he will be joined by fast bowler Warren Barnes. Opening batsman Dean Robinson earned a reprieve from Central Districts, having his contract renewed after being left off the initial list announced in July.Offspinner Cole McConchie was handed a contract with Canterbury after playing two one-day games for them late last season, while pace bowler Tony Goodin has rounded out the Northern Districts list, two years after playing his only game for them.Wellington gave a contract to Matt Taylor, who appeared in five Ford Trophy matches for them last summer, and Otago’s final contract went to pace bowler Sam Blakely, who has played two one-day games for Otago over the past two seasons.Auckland Warren Barnes, Dean Bartlett, Michael Bates, Brad Cachopa, Carl Cachopa, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Donovan Grobbelaar, Michael Guptill-Bunce, Anaru Kitchen, Tarun Nethula, Rob Nicol, Robert O’Donnell, Matt Quinn, Jeet Raval.Canterbury Todd Astle, Hamish Bennett, Neil Broom, Brendon Diamanti, Andrew Ellis, Cam Fletcher, Peter Fulton, Roneel Hira, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Johnston, Cole McConchie, Ryan McCone, Henry Nicholls, Ed Nuttall, Logan van Beek.Central Districts Doug Bracewell, Greg Hay, Jamie How, Marty Kain, Andrew Mathieson, Kieran Noema-Barnett, Ajaz Patel, Seth Rance, Dean Robinson, Bevan Small, Ben Smith, Kruger van Wyk, Ben Wheeler, George Worker, Will Young.Northern Districts Graeme Aldridge, James Baker, Jono Boult, Dean Brownlie, Joseph Carter, Anton Devcich, Daniel Flynn, Tony Goodin, Jono Hickey, Scott Kuggeleijn, Daryl Mitchell, Bharat Popli, Mitchell Santner, Anurag Verma, Brad Wilson.Otago Nick Beard, Sam Blakely, Michael Bracewell, Derek de Boorder, Jacob Duffy, Ryan Duffy, Tipene Friday, James McMillan, Aaron Redmond, Iain Robertson, Brad Rodden, Hamish Rutherford Jesse Ryder, Bradley Scott, Sam Wells.Wellington Brent Arnel, Tom Blundell, Grant Elliott, James Franklin, Mark Gillespie, Dane Hutchinson, Andy McKay, Stephen Murdoch, Michael Papps, Jeetan Patel, Michael Pollard, Matt Taylor, Ili Tugaga, Henry Walsh, Luke Woodcock.

Proposed women's T20 league 'awesome' – Bates

The prospect of a T20 league for the women’s game, modelled on the IPL, would be “awesome” according to New Zealand captain Suzie Bates

ESPNcricinfo staff19-May-2014The prospect of a T20 league for the women’s game, modelled on the IPL, would be “awesome”, according to New Zealand captain Suzie Bates.Although still in the planning stages, there is an increased movement towards making the league, known as the Women’s International Cricket League (WICL), a reality. The proposals for the league, which is likely to be based in Singapore, are being spearheaded by the former Australia allrounder Lisa Sthalekar.”I haven’t heard too many of the details, but about 18 months ago we received the first email letting us know there was this idea in the background for a women’s version of the IPL. As soon as I heard that I thought, how exciting,” Bates told ESPNcricinfo, as part of the Tea Break series with Alison Mitchell.”I think they have got more and more momentum with support from the ICC and other boards around the world. If they could get the WICL off the ground I think, globally, would be awesome for the game and it would lift the standards overall. I just hope it does happen and if it’s this year, then even better. I hope people get behind it.”Suzie Bates: “We are falling behind England and Australia, but it is hard because the resources are not the same”•ICC

Some countries, notably Australia and England [the latter recently announced 18 professional contracts], now provide far greater rewards to their women but others have struggled to keep pace. Bates conceded that New Zealand find it difficult to compete, with NZC just offering a small number of limited deals.”We are falling behind England and Australia, but it is hard because the resources are not the same. We try to do as well as we can,” Bates said. “Last year I was involved in contracts for the first time – they were called development contracts – where four players were signed up for 12 months to work part-time in cricket and also provide some financial stability.”The downside of that was that we were given a contract but expected to work for the money in cricket, which is positive for the development of the game but them being advertised as professional contracts wasn’t quite the truth, and [it was] more about working in cricket to sustain your career.”From my point of view I felt I was involved in coaching and a lot of cricket, which made you a bit stale by the end of the season. I’d like to look at other career options to sustain my cricket, which is why these leagues are exciting.”Bates was speaking ahead of the historic MCC versus Rest of the World match at Lord’s, where she will play for the RoW team, as part of the MCC’s bicentenary celebrations. The team also includes Australia’s Ellyse Perry and Meg Lanning, West Indies’ powerful duo of Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor and India’s Mithali Raj.The MCC team, consisting of England players, will be captained by Charlotte Edwards.

Hearing into BPL corruption begins in Dhaka

The full hearing on the alleged match-fixing and spot-fixing in the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) began in Dhaka on Sunday

Mohammad Isam19-Jan-2014The full hearing into the alleged match-fixing and spot-fixing in the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) began in Dhaka on Sunday. Only one of the ten accused was present, though it is not entirely clear whether he faced the tribunal members, while another didn’t attend or send a legal representative. The other eight accused were represented by lawyers, including Yasin Patel who is the legal representative of Mohammad Ashraful and Darren Stevens, who was seen walking out of the tribunal building at the end of the day.Later, the individual legal representatives of Mahbubul Alam and Mosharraf Hossain, the Dhaka Gladiators franchise and its CEO, Gaurav Rawat, spoke to the media. Barrister Nawroz MR Chowdhury, representing Dhaka Gladiators, said that he had raised the question about ICC’s role in this tribunal.”Today’s preliminary hearing was about whether the ICC has the jurisdiction to bring allegations against us and whether the BCB has given the ICC the authority to do so,” Chowdhury said. “We put forward all the irregularities. The judges have asked for a day to consider whether they can work through these irregularities. The ICC also spoke. If the tribunal feels it is right, they will start the hearing from Tuesday.”Their specific claim regarding the ICC is whether the governing body, in regulating the BPL corruption matter, is acting as an employee of the BCB. “We have questioned the ICC’s contract with the BCB, which we consider faulty,” Chowdhury said. “Even if we consider the contract to be correct, will we see the ICC as the BCB’s employees? We want to know if a superior authority can work as the inferior of an inferior authority.”A press release from the BCB’s anti-corruption tribunal confirmed that the hearing will continue on the morning of January 21.
