Bye-bye Sissoko: Spurs eye big upgrade

Nuno Santo could receive a massive upgrade to Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield this month as the transfer deadline rapidly approaches…

What’s the latest?

According to Sport Bild’s head of football Christian Falk, Spurs are one of several teams in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach powerhouse Denis Zakaria.

Earlier this week, he claimed that the Lilywhites were “in talks” with the Bundesliga outfit over a potential move this window but they are facing fierce competition from arch-rivals Arsenal, as well as Everton, AS Roma and SSC Napoli.

Further reports in Germany, via The Sun, suggest that the Swiss international could be available for a cut-price £17m, with his current deal set to expire in 2022.

On the Chalkboard

A swoop for Zakaria would certainly make life even more difficult for Moussa Sissoko, who appears to be one of several names on the chopping block in North London.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick believes that the veteran French midfielder is available for transfer and could be offered as makeweights along with other players to land their final summer transfer targets.

If Spurs’ sporting director Fabio Paratici can land Zakaria and at the same time offload Sissoko, then he’d be handing Nuno an instant upgrade to his engine room.

Somehow, the 31-year-old Frenchman earned a spot in Didier Deschamps’ Euro 2020 squad, but over the past 18 months he has seen a huge regression.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-team-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

He averaged 1.4 dribbles per game during the 2019/20 campaign but that halved to 0.7 in 2020/21. Similarly, Sissoko’s key passes per game dropped by 0.4 and he also managed far fewer tackles, via WhoScored.

Once a box-to-box animal who cost £30m, Sissoko appears to have lost what made him such a great option.

At 24, the Gladbach star would be a more viable option for the long-term and one who could make an immediate impact.

The 6 foot 3 powerhouse is known for his phenomenal work-rate and ability to cover a lot of ground on the pitch, whilst he has been likened to several top midfielders throughout his career, ranging from World Cup winner Toni Kroos to Manchester United sensation Paul Pogba.

Throughout his career to date, Zakaria has averaged 2.4 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 0.6 key passes every 90 minutes, via WhoScored, which is a stark improvement on the numbers that Sissoko put up in the top-flight last season.

Described as a “complete package” and a “rare talent” by GIFN editor Kaustubh Pandey, the £27m-rated machine would be the perfect replacement for the former Newcastle ace, should he depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before August 31st.

Paratici and co must look to sanction a move for Zakaria in the coming days.

Spurs: Paratici could rectify Levy mistake

Tottenham Hotspur sporting director Fabio Paratici could be about to rectify one of Daniel Levy’s more recent transfer blunders…

What’s the word?

According to the Evening Standard, the Premier League side are to turn their attentions to signing a creative player after agreeing a deal for Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero.

And there’s an interesting name on their shortlist, former Hotspur Way academy player Noni Madueke.

It’s claimed that Spurs are monitoring the 19-year-old attacker ahead of a potential move to bring him back to the club, although they face competition from across Europe.

The likes of Bayern Munich and Leeds United have been mooted by the report.

Bring him home!

It certainly seems like Levy made a premature decision to let the England U21 international leave in June 2018, especially for nothing, as he’s only gone on to thrive ever since.

As per the Evening Standard, Madueke’s value is ever-increasing with his impressive performances, whilst the departure of Donyell Malen to Borussia Dortmund is another factor driving up his price.

Transfermarkt value the teenager at just £14.4m but just last month, The Sun revealed PSV had a £20m asking price and were desperate to keep hold of the English starlet.

Madueke enjoyed quite the breakthrough last season. In 32 appearances (11 starts), he provided nine goals and eight assists, averaging a direct goal contribution once every 75 minutes, via Transfermarkt.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-team-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-copy” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

To put that into more of a perspective, Harry Kane’s 33 goals and 17 assists during 2020/21 were achieved at a rate of one every 79.6 minutes.

That form already looks to have continued into the new campaign as he’s bagged two goals and provided one assist across PSV’s three Champions League qualifiers so far.

Ex-Dutch midfielder Tommie van der Leegte describes the 19-year-old as “explosive”, which would back up comments from former England U21 head coach Aidy Boothroyd, who believes he’s a “powerhouse of a player.”

“Technically very good, left-footed and likes to come in off the side of the pitch, off the right and go and link. He’s got a goal in him, he’s very creative. He’s got a massive smile, a lovely kid. The lads have taken to him, as they would because he’s a good player, he has that respect for what he’s done at PSV.”

Indeed, if Spurs are looking for that creative ace, then Boothroyd’s endorsement shows exactly why they may be looking to the Eredivisie for the solution.

The English winger averaged 1.6 key passes per 90 minutes in the Dutch top-flight last term, which was more than Kane (1.4), Giovani Lo Celso (1.4), Lucas Moura (one) and even Tanguy Ndombele (0.8), as per WhoScored.

Paratici must look to seal a move for the £20m-rated gem this summer. In doing so, he’d be righting one of Levy’s big mistakes.

Captain KP sparkles

Plays of the day from the second day of the final Test between England and South Africa at The Oval

Innings of the day”The captaincy will cramp his style,” was the cry that went up when Kevin Pietersen was unveiled as England’s new leader. And to a certain extent it did. There was not a switch-hit in sight as KP set about building on the advantage that his bowlers had given him on the first afternoon – instead he produced 137 balls-worth of solid, confident, and unyielding strokeplay, in an innings that was the very epitome of responsible. Perhaps his only moment of hesitancy came when Paul Harris entered the attack with Pietersen a single blow away from his hundred. At Edgbaston, he went for it and memorably failed. This time, he came half-forward and was saved by his thigh as Harris tweaked one past his bat. One over later, however, and a forceful clip off the toes whistled through midwicket to cue the trademark leap and punch, and the latest bout of adulation of Pietersen’s Oval love-in.Dismissal of the dayFortunately for his match-fee, Pietersen restrained himself when the temptation was there to smack all three of his stumps out of the ground. His tentative edge to slip, only two deliveries after an enduring ovation for his hundred, was the pivotal moment of the day’s play. Suddenly, from the comfort of 219 for 3, England slumped to 248 for 7, and the door was ajar for an intriguing final session. All the same, in the space of his first day-and-a-half as England captain, Pietersen had answered all questions about his aptitude for the role. That momentary lapse aside, he had batted with his habitual confidence, and led in the field with enthusiasm and empathy for his team-mates.Quirky statistic of the dayOnly four England captains have made hundreds in their first Test at the helm – Pietersen, Andrew Strauss at Lord’s in 2006, Allan Lamb in Bridgetown in 1989-90 and AC MacLaren in Sydney in 1897-98. Three of those four players were born in South Africa, as was the next man on the list, Tony Greig, who made 96 against Australia at Lord’s in 1975.Tail-end hero of the dayIf there was any lingering doubt that Steve Harmison is enjoying his cricket again, he dispelled the remaining queries with a slap-happy 49 not out from 59 balls – a performance that not only delighted the crowd but his team-mates as well, as England stretched their first-innings advantage from a dicey 54 to a potentially decisive 122. Harmison has done this before against South Africa’s bowlers – his previous highest score of 42 was made in the death-throes of England’s defeat in Cape Town three years ago, when he also happened to be the top-scorer in a pretty sorry performance. Then as now, he unfurled his full repertoire of fielder-persecuting swats, swipes and edges, to take his average in Test cricket at The Oval to a faintly ridiculous 119 from five Tests.Anticlimax of the dayThe loudest roar from an exuberant second-day crowd came when Harmison hustled through for a single to complete what, at first glance, looked like his maiden Test half-century. Moments later, however, umpire Steve Davis signalled a leg-bye that triggered a wave of disappointed but good-natured booing – and Pietersen was among the most vocal. Before he could get back on strike, his unwavering partner, James Anderson had gone – nailed plumb in front of middle after losing his bearings playing two reverse-sweeps in three balls. That left Harmison with only Monty Panesar for company, and after his comedy dismissal in the first innings at Edgbaston, the whole crowd knew what was coming. Harmison clipped a single to midwicket, Panesar reacted like Rip van Winkle awaking from his doze, and Harris pinged down the stumps with the bat still two feet short of the crease.Let-off of the dayOn the eve of the Test, Mickey Arthur was asked to explain why Paul Harris was not being considered as South Africa’s first-choice spinner for the forthcoming one-day series. Without meaning to leave his words quite so un-minced, Arthur responded that Harris was a “liability” in the field, and so would be making way for Johan Botha. Sure enough, Harris lived up to his coach’s lack of faith today, when Pietersen miscued a short ball from Morne Morkel, and sent a monstrous top-edge flying down towards deep backward square. Harris was the man whose name should have been on the catch, but he all too happy to defer to Makhaya Ntini, who had to hurtle round from fine leg, and never got close with a despairing dive. Moments later, Harris was evicted from his position by an unimpressed Graeme Smith.Drop of the dayHaving already copped the abuse of a packed and raucous crowd for that first sprawling dive, Ntini found history repeating itself three overs later, when Andre Nel banged in a bouncer, and Pietersen’s ambitious pull through midwicket looped up and over mid-on. Ntini turned, sprinted and dived with every ounce of determination he could muster, but the chance refused to stick in his mitts, as The Oval exploded once again with Schadenfreudian glee.Bowler of the dayNtini did at least enjoy himself with the ball, returning his 18th five-wicket haul, and his best figures in a Test innings since South Africa lost to Pakistan in Port Elizabeth back in January 2007. Yesterday, it was Steve Harmison who proved the value of having overs under your belt, and today Ntini backed up that assertion. In consecutive innings since the start of the Lord’s Test, he has returned figures of 0 for 130, 1 for 45, 2 for 69, 2 for 70, 2 for 58, and now 5 for 94, which is an improvement in all but one of his outings this summer. With every match, he has got stronger and more confident, attacking the England batsmen from wide on the crease and tempting them into an array of indiscretions. The end seemed to be nigh when he arrived in the country, but he’ll have a role when South Africa travel to Australia at the end of the year.KP captaincy hunch of the dayAfter his endeavours in the first innings, and the buzz of his batting performance, Harmison might have expected to take the first over when South Africa came out to bat late in the day. But Pietersen’s new England is nothing if not a meritocracy, and so that honour went to the statistical star of the first innings, Anderson. It soon proved to be a decision well merited. After kicking past Smith’s outside edge with a vicious outswinger, Anderson flipped the shiny side, fizzed down an inducker, and nailed South Africa’s captain plumb in front of middle for a duck.

WICB, Digicel head to arbitration

With talks failing to bring resolution to their dispute over the sponsorship rights for the November 1 Stanford 20/20 All-Star match, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and chief sponsors Digicel will head to arbitration

Kern De Freitas24-Jul-2008With talks failing to resolve to their dispute over the sponsorship rights for the November 1 Stanford 20/20 All-Star match, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and chief sponsors Digicel will head to arbitration.Three weeks of negotiations between the WICB and Digicel have not brought about a mutually favourable solution. Now, legal teams from both parties are working towards a neutral intervention, WICB CEO Donald Peters confirmed yesterday.”Digicel have asked to go to arbitration, so we are prepared to do that,” Peters told the Express. “Our attorneys are working on that, but (we’re) not sure what time it is yet. There are guidelines to the arbitration process, so we will stick with that.”The issue Digicel raised with the Stanford five-year, US$100 million series – which consists of one All-Star match per year against an England Select team – is that the deal with the WICB and Stanford encroaches on the Irish telecommunication giants’ exclusive sponsorship rights. Allen Stanford, however, disagrees.”Digicel has to deal with the WICB, the WICB has the West Indies team,” Stanford said on Monday during the ring presentation ceremony to the Trinidad and Tobago team, the 2008 Stanford 20/20 regional winners. “We have the Stanford Superstar team which was selected by the Legends here, not by the WICB selectors, totally different, totally apart.”A 32-man training squad, including eight T&T players, has been selected for the lucrative, winner-take-all match. Stanford has exclusive television and other rights to the game according to their deal with the WICB, but Digicel has threatened legal proceedings if the issue is not settled soon.

Australia set for fourth Ashes win despite Vaughan hundred

It could be said that England are getting better

Ralph Dellor29-Dec-2002It could be said that England are getting better. Not getting the better of Australia, for they are still facing defeat, but they have at least managed to take this fourth Test into the fifth day. Having been bowled out for 387 in their second innings, largely thanks to an innings of 145 from Michael Vaughan, they set Australia 107 to win. By stumps, eight runs had been knocked off that target without mishap. With Vaughan on his way to his second hundred of the series and passing Sachin Tendulkar’s aggregate number of Test runs in 2002 (the Yorkshireman now has 1481), England enjoyed a good morning. Nasser Hussain was in obdurate mood. Raising English hopes of an epic rearguard action to force a draw, he displayed impressive resolve while his partner scored more freely.Vaughan was the dominant partner during an 80-run partnership for the third wicket. He opened his account for the fourth morning by driving leg-spinner Stuart MacGill for a straight four – one of nine he stroked in the session as he reached his sixth hundred of the year from 153 balls. MacGill’s bowling appeared to be entirely to Vaughan’s liking as he helped England add 63 runs in the first hour of something that has been all too lacking in this series – a genuine contest of Test match cricket.Hussain’s defiant innings of an hour and a half came to an end when he was out-thought by Glenn MacGrath. Failing to spot the slower ball, he pushed it straight back to the bowler to be caught and bowled for 23.Vaughan found a new ally in Robert Key who again showed that he has the temperament for Test cricket. This pair kept the momentum going by adding 67 before Vaughan’s splendid innings came to an end. AfterFinding little difficulty with MacGill in his four and a half hour stay at the crease, he tried to late cut and steered the ball straight to Martin Love at slip to be out for 145.Key reached his first fifty in Test cricket, but having done so fell to the seventh delivery with the new ball as he edged Jason Gillespie to Ricky Ponting at slip.John Crawley and Craig White continued to offer resistance, adding 55 for the sixth wicket before a resolute innings from Crawley ended when he played on to Brett Lee for 33. That was the signal for the Australian attack to pour through the breach as England suffered their customary collapse by losing their last five wickets for the addition of 45 runs in 16 overs. In the next over, White was caught behind cutting MacGill. James Foster went in similar fashion, except that he was superbly caught by Martin Love at slip. MacGill claimed his fifth wicket when Andrew Caddick drove him straight to Steve Waugh in the covers before Steve Harmison was bowled by Gillespie to bring the innings to a close on 387, their highest total of the series, leaving Richard Dawson not out on a valuable 15.The target of 107 is no more than nominal for such a strong batting line-up. Had England managed to have taken a couple of wickets in the two overs before the close, a few feathers might have been ruffled but they did not and now only a day’s rain or the most unimaginable turn of events can prevent Australia taking a four-nil lead into the final Test.

The Telegraph drop major Jack Grealish update

The Telegraph have dropped a very encouraging Aston Villa update on Jack Grealish’s future and it could be very, very good news for fans of the club.

What’s the story?

Amid speculation off the pitch linking him with a move to Manchester City, Grealish has made his presence felt on the field of play at EURO 2020, with his latest substitute appearance seeing him have a huge hand in England’s 2-0 win over Germany on Tuesday night, with the Villa star assisting Harry Kane’s goal that put the tie to bed and secured England a place in the quarter-finals.

However, as Grealish now prepares to play Ukraine in Rome at the weekend, updates are emerging about Villa’s stance on his club future.

Now, The Telegraph have claimed that Dean Smith’s Villa side are “very hopeful” of the Three Lions star putting pen to paper on a new contract to stay at the club, and thereby draw a “line in the sand” over a possible summer move away.

Villa fans will be buzzing

In a recent article for The Birmingham Mail, Ashley Preece declared: “BirminghamLive has been told that despite such reports, Aston Villa remain unaware of transfer interest surrounding captain Grealish. There’s been no contact from City, no bids while Villa have never put a valuation on their star asset.

“Villa have no intention of selling England star Grealish. The plan now is to kick on once again in 2021/22 and to catch those who finished above them last season. Villa, as CEO Christian Purslow put it, “remain deeply ambitious” and they’ll do all they can to match Grealish’s aims of becoming a European performer.”

The England international scored seven goals and provided another 12 assists across all competitions last season, and will no doubt have been hoping that his club side would be doing everything they can to try and match his ambitions.

And, with the signings of Emi Buendia and Ashley Young, Villa have already got their transfer window off to a superb start.

If Villa’s talisman needed any signs that his club were intent on surrounding him with more quality around him, then they have certainly given him just that.

Villa fans will surely be absolutely buzzing at The Telegraph’s latest update.

Meanwhile, Villa could sign their new John Carew in this man…
