Everton: Joe Thomas stunned by Davies return

Journalist Joe Thomas was left amazed after Tom Davies made a ‘surprise’ return to the Everton matchday squad against Chelsea on Sunday.

The lowdown

The 23-year-old hasn’t featured for the Toffees since the goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur almost six months ago. He sustained a knee injury in that game and then damaged his thigh the following month during his rehabilitation (via The Athletic).

Everton announced that it was a ‘high-grade’ injury which required surgery, and Davies himself said that he wouldn’t return until next season.

The Toffees left him out of their revised Premier League squad in January, only restoring him when Jean-Philippe Gbamin sealed a loan move to CSKA Moscow.

However, Davies was back on the nine-match Everton bench on Sunday, watching on from the sidelines as his team boosted their top-flight survival hopes with a 1-0 win over Chelsea.

The latest

Thomas, Everton correspondent for the Liverpool Echo, was left amazed by the presence of Davies in the matchday squad at the weekend, given the 23-year-old’s woes in recent months.

The journalist tweeted: “Incredible effort from Tom Davies to get back into Everton matchday squad ahead of expectations. A surprise spot on the bench for him today – his injury was deemed so severe he was not even registered in Premier League squad in January, only returning after Gbamin left on loan.”

The verdict

Davies’ return is a significant and unexpected boost for Frank Lampard and Everton.

He is an important squad player at Goodison Park, having featured in five of the Toffees’ seven Premier League matches prior to his injury in November.

To make his return all the more welcome, Everton were short of bodies in central midfield after Donny van de Beek (on loan from Manchester United) picked up a groin injury and Andre Gomes was also sidelined.

While most teams have played 34, or even 35, league matches, Everton still have five remaining, so there is still plenty of time for Davies to make a positive impact in the Toffees’ battle against relegation.

Newcastle keen on Rangers youngster Lowry

Newcastle United have entered pole position to sign Rangers youngster Alex Lowry this summer, according to a fresh transfer claim.

The Lowdown: Lowry one to watch

The 18-year-old is one of the most gifted young players at Ibrox currently, enjoying something of a breakthrough season for the reigning Scottish Premiership champions.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Lowry has four first-team appearances to his name in 2021/22 to date, bagging one goal and assist apiece in the Scottish Cup, not to mention being hailed as a ‘remarkable’ player by Graeme Murty.

The young midfielder’s ability clearly isn’t going unnoticed elsewhere, however, with a new claim suggesting he could possibly move away from Rangers in the near future.

The Latest: Newcastle keen on move

According to Football Insider, Newcastle have held talks with Lowry over a summer move to the Premier League club, following their big-money takeover last year.

A ‘recruitment source’ has claimed that the Magpies are ‘at the front of the queue’ to snap up the teenager as they enter pole position – with the player himself currently ‘weighing up his options’ as Rangers attempt to stop him leaving.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383632”]

It is also claimed that a meeting was held with Lowry’s own agent and Newcastle head of recruitment Steve Nickson in a hotel earlier this month.

The Verdict: Potential big loss

The lure of moving to the Premier League is great for many players around the world but Lowry choosing to leave Rangers this soon could end up being an error.

Newcastle’s newfound wealth means they could bring in various big-name signings this summer, meaning the Gers’ prodigy could struggle hugely for minutes.

Instead, staying at Rangers for at least another year would be healthier for Lowry’s development, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst potentially using him more next season.

It may be that he eventually moves on in the future, but for now, the wisest decision would be to turn down Newcastle’s advances and focus on life at Ibrox.

In other news, one Rangers player’s performance against Celtic has been hailed. Read more here.

Rangers had a howler with Aaron Hickey

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has experienced the highs and lows of the transfer market since arriving at Ibrox in 2019.

He has been able to seal impressive deals for the likes of Ianis Hagi and Joe Aribo, but he has also been culpable of a clanger or two – Cedric Itten being one example of a failed move.

However, the Gers chief has also dropped the ball at times with transfers that he has wanted to complete but has been unable to get over the line.

One player that he reportedly wanted to bring to Ibrox was left-back Aaron Hickey. The ex-Southampton chief was keen on a swoop for the youngster in 2019 and Hearts reportedly wanted £1.5m for him in 2020, but they were unable to strike an agreement as Italian side Bologna swooped in for that price.

It is now being reported by Fabrizio Romano that Newcastle United are eyeing up a deal worth up to £20m to sign the full-back this summer. This means that the Gers had a howler as they have missed out on a whopping £20m payday – and an £18.5m profit – because of Wilson’s inability to bring Hickey in during the 2020 transfer window.

Kamara 2.0

It was also a shocker from Rangers, as Hickey could have been Glen Kamara 2.0 at Ibrox.

Kamara 2.0? You may be asking yourself how that makes sense given their positions at left-back and defensive midfield respectively, but the Scot has been tipped to transition into playing centrally in the future.

Scottish coach Austin MacPhee previously claimed that the defender may develop into being like one Spain and Barcelona’s greats, saying: “He’s so young he could play a lot of positions. He could end up being like (Sergio) Busquets. Right now he reminds me of Jonny Evans, who I’ve seen in training with Northern Ireland. It’s the way he defends, moves and always wants the ball as a defender.”

Daniel Stendl labelled the 19-year-old an “extraordinary talent” and added further weight to a potential positional change, claiming: “Aaron as a player is like Philipp Lahm. For me at Hearts, he played as a full-back. He not only runs up and down the line, but looks for attacking moves like Lahm once did. And Aaron can also play in the central midfield.”

Hickey has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.89 in Serie A for Bologna this term, producing four goals and one assist from left-back. The 19-year-old has won five duels per game, at a success rate of 60%, and is showing that he can perform to a high standard on a regular basis despite his age – suggesting that he has the potential to improve further and develop into a midfield general, like Kamara, in the future.

MUFC already lining up Pogba replacement

Manchester United have an interesting summer ahead with a new manager set to be announced soon and the possibility of new signings after not making any in the January transfer window, and with Paul Pogba set to leave the club on a free this summer, the board at Old Trafford could already be putting the wheels in motion to replace him.

What’s the word?

According to TuttomercatoWeb, Manchester United will face a big battle with Paris Saint Germain to sign Sergej Milinković-Savić this summer, as the midfielder continues to be linked with moves away from Lazio at the end of the season.

The report suggests that Juventus are also interested in signing the 27-year-old, but his future is reportedly more likely to be elsewhere rather than staying in Italy.

Pogba replacement

As the clock runs down in the remaining weeks of Pogba’s contract, it’s clear the World Cup winner is interested in pursuing other options rather than securing a future at Old Trafford moving forward, and losing the player will be a shame for the club. However, if they are going to move forward it would be wise to bring in a replacement, and Milinkovic-Savic could definitely offer something new.

When you compare Milinkovic-Savic to the Man United midfielder this season it’s clear the Serbian can offer similar high quality and could even be a better attacking threat under a new manager and in a new system at Old Trafford. The Lazio midfielder has scored seven more goals (8), assisted equally nine times, has had 20% more shots and is ranked the sixth top-performing central midfielder in European football according to Soccerment.

Even the £63m-rated Lazio midfielder’s agent, Mateja Kezman, has spoken out on Pogba comparisons, hailing him in an interview with Mozzart Sport.

“When Sergej came to Italy, he was compared with Pogba, because at that moment it was probably the easiest comparison to make in terms of characteristics,” Kezman said.

“I do really respect Pogba, let’s be clear, and other linkers who can run and work for the team, but I think now Sergej has different and better quality than Pogba.”

Manchester United have a lot of work to do ahead of the summer and will need to appoint a new manager before they make any solid decision on summer signings, but with Milinkovic-Savic already reported to be in high demand the club will need to work fast to secure his signature and get him to Old Trafford.

Our team should be united – Afridi

Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain, has asked his team-mates to be united on the field and off it as they left Karachi to take part in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. The tournament, involving Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be the first assignment for Afridi’s team ahead of a busy summer in England, where they will play Australia and England.”What has happened cannot be changed,” said Afridi, referring to the turbulent last few months. “What we can do is ensure that past mistakes are not repeated. We cannot afford to be a bickering lot and the only way we can give our best is by staying united. What I want is that our team should be united on the field and off it.”I know the importance of having frequent team meetings. It’s also important for all the players to dine together as much as possible and discuss issues openly because these are the things that help boost team spirit.”The recent problems in the Pakistan team surfaced after their winless tour to Australia in 2009-10, following which, the PCB conducted an inquiry and punished several players. Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan were banned indefinitely, Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan for a year, while Afridi, Kamran and Umar Akmal were fined. No reasons for the penalties were forthcoming from the PCB at the time, but a leaked video later revealed the extent of discord within the team. However, all the players apart from Yousuf, who retired from international cricket, appealed against their punishments. The bans on Malik and Younis were overturned by an arbitrator; Afridi’s fine was removed while those of the Akmals were reduced. The selectors then included Malik, who had been slated for his attitude during the inquiry, in the squad for the Asia Cup, and recalled injury-prone fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar.Afridi said Pakistan’s squad for the competition in Sri Lanka was balanced. “We have a very solid bowling attack and the batting is also looking good. There is a lot of potential. What we need is to translate that potential into positive results and that’s only possible if each and every player gives his best for the team.”We have a long and challenging tour of England coming up but right now we are completely focusing on the Asia Cup, which is also an important assignment. A good showing in the Asia Cup would be a great start to our World Cup plans.”Pakistan’s first game of the Asia Cup is against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on June 15.

Lancashire on top despite Trott hundred

Scorecard
Jonathan Trott made a timely return to form with an unbeaten century which frustrated Lancashire’s push for victory in their County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.Trott’s 102 was his first since he made a century in his Test debut in last August’s Ashes decider at the Oval and came a day before the selectors meet to name their squad for next week’s first Test against Bangladesh at Lord’s.There has been speculation that Trott’s Test place might be under threat after his indifferent form during the winter and an inconsistent start to the domestic season which had seen him make three half centuries but five single figure Championship scores before today. But Trott came good with a determined and unflustered innings, his 21st first-class century, on a pitch of variable bounce and against a strong Lancashire attack which included his England team-mate James Anderson. Thanks to Trott and Rikki Clarke (42), Warwickshire took the game into a fourth day but Lancashire are still well-placed to complete a swift double over them. Warwickshire were set 441, which would be the highest fourth innings total in their history, for victory and they closed on 263 for 6, still 178 short of victory, having slipped to 119 for 4 at one stage.Once again it was Glen Chapple who caused them most problems with Lancashire’s captain following up his five wickets in the first innings with four more including an opening burst of 3 for 12. Chapple had Darren Maddy leg before wicket and then had England batsman Ian Bell caught behind as he tried to leave alone a ball that bounced and followed him.Warwickshire slipped to 30 for 3 when Ian Westwood nibbled another one from Chapple that bounced but Trott began the repair work with Jim Troughton in a fourth wicket stand of 89 in 24 overs. Chapple had to recall himself to break the stand which he did in his second over back when Troughton edged to first slip playing defensively.Anderson bowled two short and economical spells but was more expensive when he was brought back for a third as Trott and Clarke counter-attacked either side of tea. Trott struck seven fours in a 78-ball half century and added eight more in completing a responsible 184-ball century.Clarke, who added 86 in 26 overs for the fifth wicket with Trott, went lbw playing back to slow left-armer Simon Kerrigan and Lancashire scented a three-day win when Tim Ambrose gave a return catch to Tom Smith. But Trott, helped by Neil Carter, continued to blunt Lancashire’s attack and denied them the chance to claim the extra half-hour.

Auckland open account with stunning win

Auckland registered their first victory of the competition, and a stunning one at that, after proceedings in the first innings seemed to indicate the match was on its way to a draw. Wellington, who are at the fifth place on the points table, were asked to bat and they responded well, posting 477 courtesy a century from Stewart Rhodes (124). He was helped by half-centuries from Michael Pollard (60), Luke Woodcock (97) and Jeetan Patel (71). However, Auckland were far more dominating in their reply, with centuries from Tim McIntosh (171) and Richard Jones (107) taking them to 480 for the loss of just three wickets.Auckland declared once they went past Wellington with the intention of forcing a win, and that’s what they managed to achieve thanks to a combined bowling effort in the second innings. Led by legspinner Tarun Nethula, who took 4 for 17, Auckland kept gnawing away at the Wellington batsmen. Each of the five bowlers managed to grab at least a wicket, including two from the top order by seamer Gareth Shaw. Wellington folded for 122 in under 50 overs, and the Auckland openers, requiring 120 to win, knocked the runs off quickly on the fourth day to seal a morale-boosting win.Runs flowed in Rangiora as Northern Districts and Canterbury batted out a high-scoring draw. But, importantly, Northern Districts managed to secure a first-innings lead to clinch two points and retain their place at the top of the points table. The match featured five centuries, three in the first innings as Canterbury, after opting to bat, declared on 558 for 4. The opener Rob Nicol made 134 followed by Shanan Stewart (161*) and Dean Brownlie (112*), who added an unbeaten 236 for the fifth wicket to take their team to a mammoth score.Canterbury’s hopes of securing a first-innings lead were thwarted by a collective batting display from ND. Five batsmen out of the top six managed a score of at least 65, and each of the 11 who batted reached double-digits. The Marshall brothers, Hamish and James, struck centuries and added 122 for the fifth wicket. James Marshall then received excellent support from the lower order, as the total stretched to 726, a lead of 168; the last three wickets yielded 180 runs. Openers BJ Watling and Michael Parlane began the tough reply with a stand of 126, and Kane Williamson contributed 93 to set the platform for the Marshalls and the lower order to build on. Canterbury, as a result of the draw, were left at second place at the end of the round.Rain played spoilsport on the fourth and final day in Invercargill as the contest between Central Districts and Otago, which promised much, ended in a draw. Both teams were left tied on 18 points at the end of the game – CD won two points due to a first-innings lead – but Otago are ranked third due to a better quotient (0.972 as opposed to 0.958).CD were asked to bat, and Matthew Sinclair, backed by a solid top and middle-order performance, helped himself to 122. However, Otago hit back as their seamers Neil Wagner and Warren McSkimming grabbed seven wickets between them to restrict CD to 355 after they had threatened to get much more; the last six wickets fell for 26 runs.Aaron Redmond replied strongly in Otago’s innings, scoring 136, and while Sam Wells reached a half-century, CD held the upper hand at the end of their innings after Ewen Thompson picked up 5 for 64. Michael Mason supported him with three wickets to help bowl out Otago for 330 and secure a 25-run lead. But in a see-saw fixture, CD slipped to 95 for 5 in their second innings before rain erased any hopes of a thrilling finish on the fourth day.

ExWHUemployee drops contract update

West Ham United have opened negotiations with Angelo Ogbonna, Ben Johnson and Lukasz Fabianski in order to extend their stays at the London Stadium.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent The West Ham Way podcast that David Moyes’ side have opened contract talks with all three players, each of whom are currently on deals that expire at the end of the current campaign. An announcement regarding their respective extensions is expected to be made by the club in the near future.

In his post, the West Ham insider said: “Contract news should come soon. Negotiations have been ongoing for Fabianski, Ogbonna and Johnson.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Fabianski, Ogbonna and Johnson have been for West Ham so far this season, the news that the club are working towards extending all three of their contracts beyond the end of the season is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over Johnson’s 11 Premier League appearances this term, the £2.7m-rated full-back has helped his side to keep two clean sheets and scored one goal, as well as making 1.3 interceptions, 2.2 tackles and 2.6 clearances per game and winning 54% of his duels.

These returns have seen the 21-year-old defender average an impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.00, ranking him as the Hammers’ fifth-best performer in the league.

Meanwhile, over Fabianski’s 20 league outings in the current campaign, the £900k-rated goalkeeper has kept four clean sheets and made 3.3 saves per match, with these metrics seeing the 36-year-old shot-stopper average a SofaScore match rating of 6.88.

Finally, over Ogbonna’s 11 Premier League outings prior to suffering a cruciate ligament injury back in November, the £1.8m-rated centre-back had helped the Irons to keep three clean sheets and scored one goal. These returns saw the 33-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.71.

As such, considering just how important they are to the West Ham cause, the news that all three players look set to extend their respective stays in east London beyond the end of the current campaign is undoubtedly fantastic for everyone involved with the club.
