The Telegraph drop major Jack Grealish update

The Telegraph have dropped a very encouraging Aston Villa update on Jack Grealish’s future and it could be very, very good news for fans of the club.

What’s the story?

Amid speculation off the pitch linking him with a move to Manchester City, Grealish has made his presence felt on the field of play at EURO 2020, with his latest substitute appearance seeing him have a huge hand in England’s 2-0 win over Germany on Tuesday night, with the Villa star assisting Harry Kane’s goal that put the tie to bed and secured England a place in the quarter-finals.

However, as Grealish now prepares to play Ukraine in Rome at the weekend, updates are emerging about Villa’s stance on his club future.

Now, The Telegraph have claimed that Dean Smith’s Villa side are “very hopeful” of the Three Lions star putting pen to paper on a new contract to stay at the club, and thereby draw a “line in the sand” over a possible summer move away.

Villa fans will be buzzing

In a recent article for The Birmingham Mail, Ashley Preece declared: “BirminghamLive has been told that despite such reports, Aston Villa remain unaware of transfer interest surrounding captain Grealish. There’s been no contact from City, no bids while Villa have never put a valuation on their star asset.

“Villa have no intention of selling England star Grealish. The plan now is to kick on once again in 2021/22 and to catch those who finished above them last season. Villa, as CEO Christian Purslow put it, “remain deeply ambitious” and they’ll do all they can to match Grealish’s aims of becoming a European performer.”

The England international scored seven goals and provided another 12 assists across all competitions last season, and will no doubt have been hoping that his club side would be doing everything they can to try and match his ambitions.

And, with the signings of Emi Buendia and Ashley Young, Villa have already got their transfer window off to a superb start.

If Villa’s talisman needed any signs that his club were intent on surrounding him with more quality around him, then they have certainly given him just that.

Villa fans will surely be absolutely buzzing at The Telegraph’s latest update.

Meanwhile, Villa could sign their new John Carew in this man…

Essex and Lancashire go through to C & G fourth round

Mark Chilton and Glen Chapple took carried Lancashire to an emphatic 10-wicket victory over Derbyshire in their third round tie in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy at Old Trafford.Coming together when David Byas was forced to retire hurt on five, the two carried Lancashire to victory with more than 20 overs to spare. Chapple’s 81 runs came off just 69 balls, with 11 fours, and Chilton’s 76 was off 82 balls with 10 fours.Earlier Dominic Hewson engineered a partial Derbyshire recovery after their top order was blown away by Lancashire’s seam attack, with Peter Martin the star. But Hewson, a close-season signing from limited-overs specialists Gloucestershire, made 63 as the visitors recovered from 39 to six to reach their eventual total of 167.Martin ended with figures of two for 21 from nine overs, and there were also two wickets apiece for Kyle Hogg, Andrew Flintoff and Chris Schofield.Nasser Hussain’s excellent run of form continued as the England captain made 96 (99 balls, one six, 12 fours) to put Essex on course for a five-wicket win over Middlesex at Chelmsford. Set a stiff target of 292 to win, Essex were indebted to their captain Ronnie Irani for completing the job after Hussain had laid the foundations.Irani made an unbeaten 86 (five sixes, three fours) off just 73 balls to delight the home crowd and pilot his side to victory with 11 balls to spare.Earlier Sven Koenig (116) and Paul Weekes (76*) both scored at a run a ball to set up Middlesex’s total. And a swashbuckling, unbeaten 39 from Simon Cook (off just 15 balls) provided extra impetus at the end of the innings.

CPFC: Fans react to Bridge’s post on Favre

A number of Crystal Palace fans have been reacting to more details on Lucien Favre’s proposed move to Selhurst Park provided by Michael Bridge.

It emerged on Wednesday evening that Favre has agreed to take over at Palace and become Roy Hodgson’s long-term successor.

Favre is now waiting to be awarded a work permit to manage in England, a complicated process that is already underway.

Sky Sports reporter Bridge reiterated on Twitter that talks between Favre and the Eagles went ‘very well’, adding that discussions regarding the players from the academy have also gone well.

The likes of Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and David Omilabu were two standout players from the club’s academy to sign professional deals last season, and it seems as if Favre likes what he sees in the club’s youth ranks.

Palace fans react

Bridge’s social media post received plenty of interaction from Palace supporters, with the majority excited about the pending appointment and mention of academy talks.

Ex-Leeds United star pleased with expected Jack Harrison deal

Leeds United signing Jack Harrison permanently from Manchester City is a “no-brainer”, former Whites midfielder David Norris has told Football FanCast.

The 24-year-old has spent the last three seasons on loan at Elland Road, initially joining Marcelo Bielsa’s side back in 2018.

He now looks set to join them on a permanent basis, though, with the Daily Mail reporting that Leeds will pay Manchester City £13m to sign Harrison outright this summer.

For Norris, Bielsa and director of football Victor Orta getting this deal done is a no-brainer.

“His attitude, his determination, his endeavour, he does both sides of the game, which is obviously a must with Bielsa, and a good pro,” the ex-Leeds star said.

“Only [heard] good, positive things about him. It’s a no-brainer if they can get that one done.”

For £13m, signing Harrison really does look like a no-brainer. The English attacker has undoubtedly proven himself in the Premier League.

He carried a real threat in attack during the 2020/21 campaign, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists.

Harrison was the most dispossessed Leeds player on average (via WhoScored), so there is room for improvement there. But, overall, you would have to say he would be a quality signing for the Whites based on what he has already produced.

Robinson thrilled by Son contract claim

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit and Sky Sports regular Paul Robinson has been left thrilled by an alleged Son Heung-min contract development at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Son on the verge of Spurs deal…

Tottenham have been trying to tie down superstar attacker Son with a new deal since the start of 2020/2021.

Indeed, reports as far back as October last year claimed that the Lilywhites offered a mammoth new deal worth around £60 million in total (Football Insider).

Spurs were said to be nearing his extended stay but reliable news then emerged over Tottenham stalling his contract talks – mainly due to the financial toll of coronavirus.

The Latest: Spurs ‘confident’ of new contract

Now, Robinson has reacted to a claim by journalist Fabrizio Romano, who believes that Spurs board are now ‘confident’ an agreement can be completed soon.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The reporter says Spurs are still in talks with the South Korea star but those within the club believe a deal will be agreed once the manager situation is resolved.

Robinson now believes this development comes as ‘massive for Tottenham’.

“We talk about the managerial appointment being appointment well Son staying is almost as important,” he explained to FI.

“If Harry Kane leaves, you start to wonder what other players might want to leave. If the likes of Son and Lloris started making noises about wanting to leave on the back of Harry Kane moving to say Manchester City then it would be a huge problem for Spurs.

“To hear Son is near to signing a new deal is massive for Tottenham. It is the best news that has come out of the club in the last six months.”

The Verdict: Robinson bang on the money…

Amid the noise surrounding star striker Harry Kane and his future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs fans will indeed be relieved to hear the club are confident of tying down Son.

The 28-year-old has just come off a brilliant campaign in which he scored a brilliant 17 goals and added 10 assists in 36 Premier League starts (WhoScored).

Indeed, only Kane had a better season than Son by the numbers, and if the Englishman does leave north London then Spurs will need all the strength in depth they can muster, starting with their South Korean superstar.

Celtic: MacAnthony confirms Dembele talks

Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed conversations over a new deal for Celtic target Siriki Dembele have begun.

The Lowdown: Celtic’s interest

Celtic have been credited with an interest (Give Me Sport) in the 24-year-old in recent months.

Reports have suggested that a move for Dembele, who is the older brother of Celtic’s young talent Karamoko Dembele, could be part of a plan from the Hoops to keep the 18-year-old at Parkhead.

The Posh striker scored 11 times and registered 12 assists in 42 League One appearances this season, helping Peterborough win promotion to the Championship.

He’s out of contract this summer, however, MacAnthony is now looking to tie him down at London Road.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-3/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: MacAnthony’s Twitter post

MacAnthony was answering various questions on Twitter on Tuesday, and one involved Dembele.

He was quizzed if the club are close to agreeing on contracts with Dembele, Nathan Thompson and Dan Butler, to which he replied:

“Conversations now beginning with them all yes.”

The Verdict: A shrewd addition?

In our opinion, Celtic should be exploring a possible cut-price deal for Dembele. Not just because that may help keep his younger brother, who has been linked with a move away, at the club (although that may help), but because of his qualities.

The Peterborough man played in three positions during the current campaign, impressing in all of them.

He made 15 appearances as a centre-forward, 13 as a left-winger and 13 as an attacking midfielder, registering goals and assists in all areas.

That could come in handy under the new Hoops boss next season, especially with striker Patryk Klimala recently sealing an exit and winger Mohamed Elyounoussi set to return to Southampton following his loan spell.

Ficamos tristes.

Gers’ Morelos wants Ibrox stay

According to The 4th Official, Alfredo Morelos wants to stay at Glasgow Rangers next season.

Morelos wants Gers stay

Morelos had previously appeared to be looking for a move away from Ibrox this summer – he told Radio Caracol that he has the dream of playing in the Premier League.

Now, this latest report has revealed the Colombia international actually wants to stay at the club for the next campaign as the Gers embark on their Champions League journey. The 4th Official said (via Twitter):

“I have been told reliably by a couple of sources that Alfredo Morelos wants to stay on at Rangers for next season.”

Change of heart

Morelos has never tried to hide his desire to play at a higher level, previously stating that he wishes to play in a more prestigious league. Given his performances with the Gers – he has 93 goals in 178 games (Transfermarkt) – he has regularly put himself in the shop window, and there are likely to be a number of suitors for his services if he were to depart.

However, next season could well be a special one for the 55-time Scottish champions. Their Premiership title means they will now play in the Champions League third qualifying round, and they would therefore be just two rounds away from the group stages. Participation in Europe’s premier club competition would be a big carrot for the Gers to dangle in front of the 24-year-old.

In other news, David Provan has slammed this Rangers star.
