Samuels disputes Bravo version of events

Marlon Samuels has strongly disagreed with the statement from West Indies ODI captain Dwayne Bravo, who said that the Jamaican had given consent to standing by “any decision taken by the team” including abandoning the tour of India

Nagraj Gollapudi27-Oct-2014West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has strongly disagreed with the statement from West Indies ODI captain Dwayne Bravo, who said that the Jamaican had given consent to standing by “any decision taken by the team” including abandoning the tour of India. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Samuels pointed out that all three parties – players, WICB and West Indies Players Association – had handled the situation inappropriately but directed scathing criticism at Wavell Hinds, saying that the WIPA president was the “real reason” the situation became “messed up”.”No, I did not say that I am going to stand by any decision,” Samuels said in a telephone interview on Monday from Jamaica. “Because nobody asked me questions like that. It is up to the individual to say okay I am with you. You had people in the room that didn’t even open their mouth or say anything. At the end of the day, I went there and asked my questions and I wasn’t satisfied [by the response]. If I was satisfied then I will be the first person to come out because I am an outspoken person. Then I will be the first person to come out and defend everything with [Bravo].”This is the second time in less than a week Samuels has expressed a difference of opinion in the public domain against Bravo. In an interview with a radio station last week, Samuels said he spent time “ordering room service” while the rest of the players were attending meetings as he wanted “to finish the tour.” Bravo said he was “shocked” at Samuels considering he had participated in the meeting “vigorously” asking questions. However, Samuels clarified that he had asked certain questions of Bravo in the two team meetings he had attended in India and having failed to get a convincing response, he decided to stay away. According to Samuels, he had asked Bravo to come out and explain to the Caribbean public the exact situation because failing to be transparent with them was not right.”One of the questions I asked was the public don’t really know what is happening,” Samuels said. “The public are being misled. They need to know the truth behind this [pullout]. They need to go out there and explain what is really happening. He wasn’t willing to go and do that. That is why I say that if you are not up to doing what I want to go there and do, which is the right thing, then you are not going to get my full support. You cannot expect [me] to go and fight a war if you are not willing to go out and speak.”Samuels’ reactions are a setback for Bravo who had said in a media statement released last Friday that the decision to leave India after the fourth ODI in Dharamsala was taken with the “full concert” of all the players. Samuels said that he was not surprised at all by Bravo releasing a statement but he agreed, and suggested, that calling him directly to sort things out would have been the best step.”What he should have done, if you are a true leader, is to go out and call the player and ask him did you say things like this,” Samuels said. He also stressed he was not siding with either WICB or WIPA in the current situation but criticized administrators for failing to be proactive to come up with a solution. “I am not basically swinging with nobody in this matter. If you cannot go out and talk it as it is then I am not up to it.””All situation is handled badly. Wavell is wrong. The [WICB] president [Dave Cameron] should have taken a flight down to India and come and have a talk. To sit in the Caribbean and not come and speak to the players cannot be the right way to deal with things. So right across the board it is wrong.”Incidentally representatives of all three warring factions met in Jamaica on Monday for “cordial and fruitful” discussions as described in a joint statement issued at the conclusion of the meeting. Cameron and Hinds were present at the meeting which also was attended by players representatives Andre Russell and Jason Holder, along with legal counsel. Though Samuels said the blame for the tour abandonment should be spread among all the parties involved, he feels Hinds is most at fault.”If you look at the situation, the real, real person here to be blamed is WIPA. Wavell Hinds, the president, that basically messed up everything. If you look at the situation you can’t really blame [the WICB] for accepting what Wavell has done. Wavell is the main problem here. The players are upset with what Wavell has done. But remember I am not part of WIPA.”Asked why he was not accredited to the players’ body, Samuels revealed the only reason was the way WIPA left him out “in the cold” when he was serving at two-year ban for having links with an Indian bookmaker. “Since I got the two-year ban I was left in the cold, on my own. I have to get my own lawyer. I have to do everything on my own. WIPA wasn’t there for me. So I come back into cricket and choose not to be a part of WIPA because WIPA did not help me. So I do not feel like I should do anything for WIPA.”

Keeping to Murali prepared me for Ajmal – Sangakkara

Years of keeping wicket to Muttiah Muralitharan and plain good vibes have been behind Kumar Sangakkara’s ability to mute Saeed Ajmal and succeed against the Pakistan attack, the batsman said after hitting his 10th double-hundred

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Galle09-Aug-2014Years of keeping wicket to Muttiah Muralitharan and plain good vibes have been behind Kumar Sangakkara’s ability to mute Saeed Ajmal and succeed against the Pakistan attack, the batsman said after hitting his 10th double-hundred. Ajmal has been the most penetrative spin bowler in the world for some years, counting the doosra made famous by Murali among his chief weapons. But Sangakkara has played him better than most, falling to Ajmal only three times in 13 matches. He averages 167 against Ajmal.”I think it’s mainly because I’ve kept a lot to Murali, so I’ve had to learn to read deliveries from the hand,” Sangakkara said of his good record against Ajmal. “I don’t say that I read Ajmal all the time, but most of the time I do read his doosra, so that makes it slightly easier to play. Because I’m a leftie I don’t have to worry about being hit on the pads when he beats my bat. If he does beat my bat, it’s usually straight to the wicketkeeper. As a right-hander, he can beat you on both sides of the bat, so that makes it a bit hard. It’s a combination of both factors.”Sangakkara has made more runs than any batsman against Pakistan, with 2707, and three of his double-hundreds and 10 of his 37 tons coming against them. He averages 84.59 against them in 38 innings, but he could only guess at why he has been so prolific against a team that fields a consistently testing attack.”My first double-hundred was against them in Lahore. Since then I’ve just had a knack of scoring against them. They’ve got a very good attack, but it’s maybe because I’m a left-hander. Maybe their spinners find it a bit difficult to bowl to me – I don’t know. I think I’ve had a bit of good fortune as well along the way. They sometimes drop a few catches along the way, which helps me. Sometimes as a batsman you feel in sync and in rhythm with a certain attack, and I think the Pakistanis have been like that for me.”No one else in the Sri Lanka side made triple figures, though Sangakkara did strike up century stands with Kaushal Silva, Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews during his 221. Sri Lanka had been precariously placed after Pakistan made 451 in their first innings, and although a win seems far off, Sangakkara had ensured Sri Lanka were unlikely to lose the match.”There was quite a bit of hard work, and quite a bit of luck. The thing with the Pakistan bowlers was it was a bit difficult to score singles, especially with a spinner like Ajmal, because he’s got variation. Being a leftie, I rarely come out of the crease to him. Other than that, if you spend enough time out there, there’s runs on offer. It would have been brilliant if Mahela and Angelo got hundreds, because they both looked well set and looked comfortable. It was a bit disappointing that they couldn’t make it over the line, because they really deserved that.”Ajmal completed a five-wicket haul on day four, but had had to wait for 46.3 overs before he made his first breakthrough – he has never bowled so many before taking his first wicket. His plight was not helped by a Galle surface taking far less turn than it has in the past, but Sangakkara said Sri Lanka could have been in a better position to force a result had they been clinical with the ball in the first innings.”Maybe there is a bit less turn in this pitch. It maybe broke up a bit less and there was more grass cover on the wicket. I think it was a fantastic effort by the curator to give us a wicket of such quality after the rain that they had and the preparation being stalled. I think it was a case where again we let the Pakistan tail get away with a few too many runs, especially with Rehman getting a fifty. Other than that if we can get a few early wickets in the morning, we’ll try and see if we can put pressure on them.”

Saracens into next SL Premier League Tournament

A first-innings lead in the drawn relegation match sent Saracens Sports Club to next year’s first-class tournament, while Panadura Sports Club finished a dispiriting season by moving down into the Emerging Trophy. Panadura won only one match from 11 in the season and lost nine matches outright.Having chosen to bat, Saracens had been in strife at 103 for 6, but a lower-order resurgence headed by Mohomad Aslam’s 55 prolonged to innings to reach 240. Left-arm spinner Amila Perera was the major threat, taking 5 for 47.Saracens captain Chanaka Ruwansiri then put his team on the brink of promotion, as his legspin claimed 5 for 32 in Panadura’s reply, which brought only 157 runs. No Panadura batsman crossed 40, though an opening partnership of 64 had promised much.Having gained the upper-hand, another lower-order rally for Saracens put the result out of reach. Panadura offspinner Rajeeva Weerasinghe had laid waste to Saracens’ top order, eventually taking 6 for 96, but recovery from a scoreline reading 115 for 7 was possible with Amila Mendis slamming a 111-ball 108 to effectively ensure his side moved into the Premier League. His 125-run eighth-wicket stand with Tharushan Iddamalgoda formed the core of Saracens’ 299 in the second innings.Panadura, who only faced two overs in their own second innings, are now resigned to the second division.

Senanayake relishes batting responsibility

Sri Lanka are aware of Sachithra Senanayake’s value as a spinner and a lower-order batsman, and have persisted with him despite other options

Mohammad Isam19-Feb-2014Sachithra Senanayake’s two wickets in the first ODI against Bangladesh broke a run of five wicketless matches for him, all played against Pakistan in the UAE two months ago. But Sri Lanka are aware of his value as a spinner and a lower-order batsman, and have persisted with him despite other options.Senanayake was picked as the specialist spinner ahead of Ajantha Mendis, and proved his worth with the wickets of Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah in the same over as Bangladesh slipped from 133 for 4 to 133 for 6 in the 29th over. He was also effective earlier in the game with the bat, helping Thisara Perera add 82 runs for the ninth wicket after Sri Lanka had slumped to 67 for 8.”We have to handle the pressure,” Senanayake said. “Pitches here are really nice so we can bat through. If I get a chance, my mission is to bat till the last over. I feel I am lucky to be there in the end. We do basic things with Marvan Atapattu. He wants the bowlers to bat every day. I think because of that the bowlers are batting really well.”Senanayake had recently batted Sri Lanka to a win against Pakistan. With four runs required off five balls, he took a couple off Shahid Afridi before crashing the ball to the point boundary. There may have been a dearth of wickets, but Senanayake has concentrated on the basics. He attributed it to his mental strength. “I think I am a cool guy. I don’t take pressure,” he said.”There isn’t any competition. If captain and coaches want to go with me, I am satisfied. It is not a big issue for me. If Ajantha [Mendis] is doing well, he should play.”

Kotak to retire from first-class cricket

Shitanshu Kotak, the veteran Saurashtra batsman, will end his two-decade long first-class career after his side’s Ranji Trophy opener against Rajasthan on his home ground in Rajkot later this month

Abhishek Purohit18-Oct-2013Shitanshu Kotak, the veteran Saurashtra batsman, will end his two-decade long first-class career after his side’s Ranji Trophy opener against Rajasthan on his home ground in Rajkot later this month. Kotak, who turns 41 on Saturday, will call time on a career that began against Bombay in December 1992. He has played 129 matches so far and is four short of 8000 first-class runs with an average of 41.64 and 15 centuries.Kotak told ESPNcricinfo he had thought of retirement after Saurashtra’s run to the Ranji final last season but postponed it in the emotion of the moment. “I felt the team had done so well to reach the final,” he said. “It was a superb achievement and I did not want to take away from it with talk of my retirement.”But now I feel the time has come to make way for someone young. It is a good time to go. There are so many youngsters around to take the team ahead. I would like to thank the Saurashtra Cricket Association and Mr Niranjan Shah for all the support throughout my career. To have played for so long and not be dropped, I could not have asked for more. I would like to remain associated with the game in whatever manner possible after retirement. I will have a chat with Mr Shah and my association and plan the way forward. I would also like to thank my employers, Bharat Petroleum, for allowing me so much flexibility to play domestic cricket, even when it clashed with corporate matches.”Many veteran first-class cricketers move on from their home states to play for other sides as professionals, but Kotak said he could somehow never bring himself to take that path. “I would not say I didn’t think about it. In fact, there were some offers as well. I have nothing against those who play as professionals. It means a lot of money and respect. But I have played for Saurashtra for so long that I could not imagine myself playing for some other team. I have played for the same company and the same club as well for close to 20 years. “Saurashtra’s entry into the Ranji final last season is one of Kotak’s most cherished memories. “There are so many things to remember. Last year’s final is of course one of them. Also, Saurashtra winning the domestic one-day championship (in 2007-08) and qualifying for the Elite League from the Plate League.”When asked if there was any temptation to play one more season after seeing Saurashtra fall at the last hurdle previous season, Kotak said that would always be the case. “That feeling will be there,” he said. “But some day I had to take the call. Some day, it had to come to an end. I will still play for Bharat Petroleum in the Times Shield and league cricket in England. But this is it as far as first-class cricket goes.”Not being able to play for India wasn’t a regret, Kotak said, although he would have loved to have won the Ranji Trophy. “Every player wants to play for his country. That could not happen for me, but that is not a regret. Maybe I was not destined to. We played the Ranji final last year against a better team (Mumbai). Had we played in Rajkot, it could have been a different game. But even then, I would say the better team won on the day.”Known for his ability to bat for long periods and stonewall bowling attacks, Kotak was part of Saurashtra’s transformation from a weak side to a unit that is now a force in domestic cricket. He said he had seen the team change completely in the previous two decades. “To think that we now have as many as three people playing for India (Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and Jaydev Unadkat). It is a tremendous achievement. We have come a long way.”Kotak said first-class cricket in India had changed for the better, chiefly in terms of money and exposure. “It is possible now for a domestic cricketer to settle himself somewhat financially over a career of say, ten years. More than money, I think there has been a drastic improvement in the exposure domestic cricketers get. Earlier, even if you did well, people would talk about it for two-three days, and then forget about you, especially if you played for a smaller team. Now, it is not possible for people to ignore you if you do well. Performances get noticed.”While Kotak will miss the Saurashtra dressing room, he will get more time to play with his son. Kotak giving throwdowns to the 12-year old was a common sight after the end of a day’s play in Rajkot. “That is definitely a positive outcome. Otherwise, he would have complained I was never able to give him enough time.”

Yousuf five-for demolishes Ireland's chase

Left-arm spinner Sadia Yousuf’s five-wicket haul demolished Ireland Women’s chase to help Pakistan Women complete a 89-run win to take the series 2-0.

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jul-2013
ScorecardLeft-arm spinner Sadia Yousuf’s five-wicket haul demolished Ireland Women’s chase and helped Pakistan Women complete a 89-run win to take the one-day series 2-0.Chasing 249, Ireland suffered an early loss but an 84-run partnership between opener Clare Shillington and Cecelia Joyce kept the innings going. Yousuf got the big breakthrough for Pakistan when she had Shillington caught behind for a steady 39 in the 19th over, bringing an end to the only substantial partnership in the Irish innings. Yousuf struck again to dismiss Joyce for 49 in the 21st over and Ireland’s chase seemed to lose steam thereon, as they kept losing wickets regularly. Having dismissed three of Ireland’s top-order batsmen, the left-arm spinner came back to clean up the tail and the Irish innings folded for 159, 89 runs short of the target.Pakistan, who chose to bat, followed a similar trajectory in their innings. The openers began steadily, adding 49 runs, before a 94-run partnership between Javeria Khan and Nain Abidi built a solid platform for Pakistan to attack in the last 10 overs. Abidi fell for a 69-ball 50, while Javeria scored 81 off 105 balls with eight fours. In-form batsman Bismah Maroof hit a few attacking shots and looked good to take Pakistan to a big score. However, the side managed to lose their last five wickets in the last three overs, and three of those wickets fell to run-outs. From the relative strength of 237 for 5, the Pakistan innings ended on 248, with Bismah the last batsman out.The win caps off a successful series for Pakistan ahead of their Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers against Thailand, Zimbabwe and Netherlands, which will be played on on July 23, 25 and 27.
