West Brom’s summer call on Slaven Bilic could well be justified vs Preston

West Bromwich Albion have plenty of work to do tonight after they saw their Championship lead slip over the weekend, but that was only because they weren’t in action.

Although, the Baggies face no easy test as they head to Lancashire to face playoff-hunting Preston North End, who are managed by a very familiar name.

Leeds United soared to a resounding 4-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday meaning they overtook Albion to snatch first place by just a point – a win here tonight would see them regain their throne.

Earlier this summer, sporting and technical director Luke Dowling made the decision to appoint Slaven Bilic as their next manager, and so far, it looks like a phenomenal decision with the west Midlanders only losing the one game this season, four fewer than this time last term.

Tonight, the Croatian goes to war with, what was to be believed, Dowling’s original target for the job – Alex Neil.

The Telegraph reported back in April that the 38-year-old was one of the front-runners to take charge at the Hawthorns with the club ‘poised’ to pay around £650k in compensation to clinch him.

Albion weren’t aggressive enough which allowed tonight’s opponents to offer him a new contract, and thus, they missed out on the 2015 Championship playoff-winning boss.

However, their decision to opt for the former West Ham manager could be fully vindicated tonight if the Baggies can keep their title push rolling with a victory at Deepdale.

The Lilywhites are currently sat in sixth position, some eight points behind West Brom and face several injury concerns going into tonight’s fixture.

Meanwhile, a draw will not be enough for Albion to rise back to the summit as Marcelo Bielsa’s side possess a superior goal difference.

Newcastle United fans praise Miguel Almiron for role in West Ham win

Lots of Newcastle United fans have been praising Miguel Almiron for his performance against West Ham on Saturday, as Steve Bruce’s men recorded a 3-2 win.

Supporters have been praising Almiron for his role in the victory, after the 25-year-old displayed an “absolutely phenomenal” work rate to track back and attack in east London.

The 25-year-old recorded 47 touches against the Hammers, as he attacked and defended up and down the right-hand channel, while drifting across the edge of the Irons’ area to offer support to his Toon teammates.

Almiron again failed to open his account for goals or assists, though, as he could not convert any of his three on-target efforts and did not register a key pass, per WhoScored data.

He did find a teammate with each of his 24 passes, though, with ten coming in the final third – no other Newcastle player completed all of their attempted passes.

Only Federico Fernandez and Isaac Hayden were successful with more of their tackles than Almiron of Bruce’s men, with the Paraguay international taking possession on two occasions, along with recording one clearance and two interceptions.

Almiron’s total of four shots at the London Stadium was the most he has attempted in a Premier League game so far this term, while also penning a joint-season low one unsuccessful touch.

Sunderland’s Phil Parkinson says his squad need to improve their mentality

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Phil Parkinson spoke of his relief to still be involved in the draw for the next round of the FA Cup, but also issued a stern message to his players.

What did he say?

Sunderland let their lead slip at home to Gillingham on Saturday in a result which left their manager a little despondent after the game.

He looked visibly frustrated at his team’s inability to kill off a game which they dominated in large parts, with more possession and more corners than their opponents.

It wasn’t the manner in which they conceded which annoyed Parkinson, but he did speak of the importance of reacting to that moment, and identified what his squad must start doing if they want to win matches and be successful.

Speaking to safc.com, he said: “We must be stronger as a group, you don’t always get it your own way.

“Things do go against you on a football pitch, and when they do you’ve got to make sure that there’s a toughness about us as a group to come out the other side of that.”

Too often this season the Black Cats have lacked that. They have scored two or more goals in only six out of 15 league games, and recent 1-0 defeats by Wycombe and Shrewsbury hint at a lack of fight.

Not a promotion team?

Since dropping into the third-tier Sunderland have lacked the clinical edge which can often prove the difference between finishing in the automatic promotion spots and not.

Their five draws this term adds to their 21 in 2018/19, which underlines their inability to get games across the line and win even if they’re not playing particularly well.

That is what is needed if they are to gain promotion, and interestingly Parkinson believes it is down to a mentality, rather than the abilities of his players.

It is an alternative take from the manager because his strikers Will Grigg, Marc McNulty and Charlie Wyke have scored just four league goals between them this season, and that would seemingly be a cause in their lack of attacking prowess, and an indication that they’re not good enough.

However, once Gillingham’s equaliser went in on Saturday they started to produce more chances, with Sunderland’s players seemingly losing a bit of confidence and morale, and that is something Parkinson has to put right.

If he can instil belief in the squad and an attitude of never giving up – which he did when he won promotion at Bolton – he may just begin to turn things around, despite the apparent need to strengthen the playing squad.

Newcastle fans react to link with Victor Osimhen

Newcastle United fans have been reacting as scouts are keeping track of Lille forward Victor Osimhen, according to a report in The Chronicle.

The Nigerian striker recently joined the French outfit from RSC Charleroi in Belgium and made himself part of the club’s infamous project.

With Joelinton currently yet to get up to speed at St James’ Park since his £40m from Hoffenheim, the Magpies are believed to be looking towards their winter recruitment is being taken into careful consideration to bolster the attacking line for Steve Bruce’s side.

The Chronicle revealed that scouts have been deployed to the Hauts-de-France outfit to track the progression and player development of the 20-year-old, who has seven goals in nine games this season in Ligue 1.

Osimhen recently scored against Chelsea during Lille’s Champions League Group Stage tie against the Blues but fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Supporters seem a little unsure about the links to the Nigerian star, with one fan saying he is “10 times the player Joelinton is”. However, others believe that it is pointless going for such a player with the current management and owners at the club.

Wolves fans react to Ryan Bennett’s 100th Premier League appearance

Wolves pulled off one of the shocks of the weekend as they defeated reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on their own patch to add further woe to their title hopes.

Pep Guardiola’s side now sit some eight points behind league leaders Liverpool while Wolves have enjoyed an upturn in form with three straight victories in all competitions.

Adama Traore netted a brace inside the final ten minutes to secure the victory at the Etihad Stadium.

There was an early scare in the first half when utility man Romain Saiss suffered a hamstring injury and had to be substituted in just the 13th minute.

Luckily, Nuno Santo was able to call on centre-back Ryan Bennett, who in recent games has been dropped.

But he reacted like a true professional to help his side record a clean sheet against a frontline containing Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, who have scored 14 goals between them already this season.

It was also a landmark game for the 29-year-old as he made his 100th appearance in the Premier League, which is a solid return from a player that Wolves managed to pick up on a free transfer in 2017.

Several fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the occasion with one supporter claiming it was ‘well deserved.’

Another member of the Molineux faithful believes Bennett has been one of the best signings the club have made in recent times while one more hailed him as a ‘top professional.’

Jan Vertonghen’s Tottenham future leads to debate among club’s fans

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is not convinced that centre-back Jan Vertonghen deserves a new contract.

Vertonghen has made close to 300 appearances for Spurs since arriving from Ajax in 2012, but the Belgium international has struggled to show his best form this season – managing just 1.3 tackles per game in the Premier League.

The defender was actually left out of Tottenham’s first three league games of the campaign, but he has played the full 90 minutes in their last three.

The 32-year-old will see his current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expire at the end of the season.

However, according to Football Insider, Pochettino is concerned by Vertonghen’s form this term and is unsure whether to sanction a fresh contract.

A number of Spurs fans have been on social media offering their views on the situation – and there are some mixed views.

West Brom loanee Oliver Burke shares a snap from his La Liga debut

Unfortunately, Burke’s debut in Spain didn’t go as planned.

Alaves were beaten 1-0 by Sevilla, and a quick look at the stats suggests that they were outplayed as well.

Sevilla had more shots, more possession and a higher pass success rate.

Burke himself didn’t seem to have much of an impact after coming on at half-time, as his WhoScored rating was just 6.22 on his debut.

You can’t look too much into it due to the fact that it was his first appearance in a new division, but it’s certainly not an encouraging start to his loan spell.

Championship Transfer Roundup: Clarke-Salter news, West Brom eye Holgate, Osborn could leave

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday’s Championship transfer roundup was made up of Leeds’ interest in a Premier League defender, West Brom’s pursuit of a rival full-back and QPR’s desire to bring in a Chelsea starlet. Today’s edition shares news on another Blues youngster, the Baggies’ chase of a 22-year-old and the potential departure of a Nottingham Forest midfielder to the Premier League.

Birmingham ahead of Leeds for Clarke-Salter

With Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, amongst others, ahead of him in the race for a starting spot at Stamford Bridge, Jake Clarke-Salter always looked set to move out on loan ahead of the new season. Leeds were reportedly interested in taking him to Elland Road, but themselves and Swansea have been beaten to his signature by another second-tier club. It has been confirmed that the 21-year-old has completed a season-long switch to Birmingham City. The England U21 international spent last season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem and played 29 games for them in the Eredivisie.

West Brom want to re-sign Holgate

Despite signing Darnell Furlong from QPR, Slaven Bilic and West Brom are still looking to bring in another defender. According to The Daily Mail, the Baggies have enquired about re-signing Everton’s Mason Holgate on loan for the upcoming campaign. During his time at the Hawthorns last season, the 22-year-old made 23 appearances for the Midlands outfit. Since signing from Barnsley in 2015, the full-back has played 48 games for the Toffees.

Sheffield United close to Osborn

Nottingham Forest have already seen nine players leave the club this summer, and it appears that a tenth may soon be walking out of the door. According to Football Insider, newly-promoted Premier League side Sheffield United are on the verge of signing midfielder Ben Osborn. The 24-year-old is reportedly already having a medical at Bramall Lane, with Forest giving the former England U20 international permission to hold talks with the Blades ahead of the expected switch. Osborn has made 230 appearances in six years at the City Ground and has scored 16 goals.
