'RCB is a place I can express myself' – Yuvraj

Yuvraj Singh, who became the most expensive player purchased at the IPL auction breaking the $2m mark, ahead of Dinesh Karthik, said, “I’m very happy to go to RCB and am looking forward to playing alongside the likes of Chris Gayle and AB and all the other great guys in the team,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “But the World T20 is up first and that’s what I’m focussed at the moment. I am trying to play as much domestic cricket as I can to prepare myself for that, and I hope for the best.”Yuvraj believed his top billing meant he would have to tackle greater expectation but added that the environment he is going into would help him work better. “I just feel that I am going to a place where I can express myself,” he said. “Everyone’s talking about my being the highest-paid player and being bought for so much at an auction, that also means that there is a lot of focus on you and on how you have to win matches, it adds responsibility. In RCB, we’ve got a lot of guys who are match winners on their own – Gayle, AB, Virat, Albie [Morkel], Rampaul can just take games away single-handed. It’s a brilliant bunch, it is great that in that kind of environment, I can go and express myself.”The World T20 and the IPL will bring an end to a season in which had Yuvraj found his place in and out of the Indian ODI team, playing series against Australia, West Indies and South Africa scoring one fifty in 11 ODIs and one in a T20I against Australia. He was also not used as a slow-bowling option in eight of those 12 matches. The end of the season he says is not to be treated as one final stand. “I’m not looking at making any big statement. At the end of the season, it’s not like I have to prove anything to anyone else [about] what I can do. I have to prove to myself that I have it in me.”He said his performances for India in international events like the 2007 World T20 and the ICC World Cup in 2011 were, “proven contributions to the team” and added, “You are not going to be thinking about what others are thinking and what you must prove to them – you have to prove things to yourself – and that is what I am looking to do with all the opportunities I get.”

Simmons signs two-year extension as Ireland coach

Phil Simmons has signed a two-year contract to extend his tenure as Ireland coach until the end of the 2015 domestic season.Simmons, a former West Indies allrounder who took over as Ireland coach following the 2007 World Cup, guided them during a period of unprecedented success. Under Simmons, Ireland qualified for six consecutive global events, and won nine trophies including three ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers, two Intercontinental Cups, the 2008 European Championships, 2009 ICC Trophy, 2010 World Cricket League Division One title and the 2012 World Cricket League Championship. He will have a chance to add to that collection next week, when Ireland take on Afghanistan in the Intercontinental Cup final in Dubai.”It wasn’t a difficult decision to agree a further two years,” Simmons said. “I love Ireland and the people, who have a similar outlook to life as West Indians. The team has been very successful, but importantly for me, they are still hungry for success and willing to learn and improve all the time.”We still have a long way to go and it’s an exciting period to be involved with Irish cricket, both on and off the field. We’re putting in place foundations that will serve the sport well in the generations to come.”There’s always been quality in the Irish team, but we’re adding genuine depth which can be seen now in the players who aren’t in the squad. It’s certainly made selection meetings a lot longer though.”We’ve dominated at Associate level and now have ambitions to take the game in Ireland to the next level with our desire to become a Test nation by 2020. We’re on course to meet the challenges and targets that have been set, and I’m delighted to be part of that set-up”Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom was upbeat after securing the deal. “We are delighted that Phil will be staying with us for at least another two years. It is obvious that he has been one of the main catalysts for the continued success not just of the squad, but also of Irish cricket itself, that is now generally regarded as the country’s fastest-growing sport,” he said. “Like us, he believes that this team is capable of great things both in limited-overs cricket and, eventually, in the Test arena and his passion for the Irish cause remains undimmed.”Irrespective that Phil is already the longest-serving coach at this level, it didn’t require much persuasion for him to remain at the helm of a squad that he continues to lead with enormous skill and conspicuous success.”

Powerful Perera trumps T&T in tense chase

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKarn Sharma hit the winning runs as Sunrisers Hyderabad opened their account in the main draw•BCCI

Sunrisers Hyderabad were subjected to an examination of their batting depth and, in their opening game of the tournament’s main draw, showed that they could look after themselves even without much assistance from Shikhar Dhawan. Trinidad & Tobago were in control for the most part of the second innings, but Thisara Perera’s fearless hitting narrowed the gap between the runs required and balls remaining to take Sunrisers home in a tense chase of 161.The first game of the day – between Titans and Brisbane Heat – was a low-scoring one, with the fast bowlers taking control in helpful conditions. However, as the evening wore on, the dew became a factor and the margin for error was minimal for the bowlers, who struggled to bowl the lengths they wanted. Sunil Narine’s parsimonious and incisive spell of 4 for 9 kept T&T in the hunt but Perera not only managed to survive him but ensured he stayed till the end. Perera’s knock had its fair share of slogs that only connected thin air, some dangerously close to the outside edge, but he cleared the rope four times and his timely boundaries ensured Sunrisers were always in the hunt.Dhawan gave Sunrisers a start with a brisk 23, but when he popped the simplest of catches to Navin Stewart, it was game on. It was then down to the experience of JP Duminy to restore some order, but his run-out – caught ball-watching – gave T&T the edge. Sunrisers were going at seven an over when Duminy was dismissed, and the required rate was over nine.Perera walked in and smashed his second ball for six, over long-off. T&T had to be careful not to feed him length balls on middle and leg, Perera’s favourite hitting zone. Rayad Emrit made the mistake of bowling there and was duly smashed for a four and six off consecutive balls to deep midwicket. Narine had a struggling Hanuma Vihari stumped for 18 and proceeded to bowl out a wicket maiden, silencing Darren Sammy who opted to see off T&T’s best bowler.Perera released the pressure the following over with two boundaries off Emrit. He had a lucky escape on 32 when he pulled Ravi Rampaul to deep midwicket, only for Lendl Simmons to palm the ball over the rope while attempting a tough catch. Emrit’s final over cost T&T as he leaked 23. He started off with two wides before getting smashed by Sammy over deep midwicket. The dew may have been responsible for the low full tosses which were put away. Poor catching didn’t help T&T’s cause either as Sammy was also let off in the same over.Narine returned for his final over to nip out two wickets in two balls, but Perera’s was the wicket T&T were desperate for. It came down to seven needed off the last over but Perera showed enough trust in Karn Sharma, who sealed the win in style with a six over deep square leg. After losing the toss, T&T had been boosted by Darren Bravo who adopted a similar aggressive approach on a surface that was seamer friendly. T&T looked set to post much more, but the Sunrisers seamers shared seven wickets between then to keep them down to a competitive 160.

Klinger dashes Glamorgan dreams

ScorecardMichael Klinger saw Gloucestershire storm to victory•Getty Images

Glamorgan’s chances of reaching the Friends Life t20 quarter-finals disappeared as Gloucestershire trounced them by nine wickets in the final group match at Cardiff.Chasing 142 to win, captain Michael Klinger helped Gloucestershire achieve the double over Glamorgan with 86 from 59 balls with 11 fours and a six, as Gloucestershire won with 22 balls to spare.Glamorgan needed to win to qualify for the last eight but it was a disappointing end to their T20 campaign after they had won their opening four games. Glamorgan, who included former England bowler Simon Jones, were put into bat and could only make 141 for 5 from their 20 overs despite Jim Allenby batting through the innings, scoring 85 from 58 balls with four sixes and six fours. His dominance was highlighted with only two other batsmen – Marcus North and Murray Goodwin – getting into double figures. And out of 13 boundaries in the innings Allenby struck 10 of them with Glamorgan struggling to dominate a largely inexperience attack.Openers Allenby and captain North, who was promoted up the order, gave the home side a useful platform scoring 41 from the opening six-over Powerplay. But runs dried up as North was bowled by the impressive Benny Howell leaving Glamorgan 55 for 1 in the ninth over. The big-hitting Chris Cooke failed to make his mark as he holed out to deep midwicket for just 6 and Nathan McCullum, pushed up the order, was out leg before. It saw Glamorgan struggle to 73 for 3 in the 12th over.Glamorgan failed to get a boundary from the eighth to the 14th over until Allenby struck his fifth four which saw him reach his 50 from 42 balls. It was Allenby’s third half century in nine T20 matches this season. Allenby struck a six to bring up the 100 and followed that up with another six off the final ball of the innings.Gloucestershire, through Klinger and Chris Dent, made a positive start reaching 18 for 0 after the first two overs from Michael Hogan and Jim Allenby. Klinger and Dent each struck a boundary off Wagg as Gloucestershire reached 32 after four overs.Glamorgan gambled on slow left armer Dean Cosker bowling the final over of the Powerplay but 12 runs came from it as Gloucestershire reached 50 for 0 after six overs. After Gloucestershire had got to 65 for 0 after eight overs McCullum came into the attack to have Dent caught at long-off.By the halfway stage Gloucestershire reached 79 for 1 with 15 coming off the 10th over from Simon Jones. Klinger went to a 37-ball half-century as Gloucestershire cruised to victory in the 17th over.

Sreesanth's belongings seized – Mumbai Police

Mumbai Police has seized “what appear to be” the belongings of Sreesanth and Jiju Janardhan – both arrested by Delhi police on spot-fixing allegations – from hotel rooms booked in their names at a five-star hotel in Mumbai

ESPNcricinfo staff18-May-2013Mumbai Police has seized “what appear to be” the belongings of Sreesanth and Jiju Janardhan – both arrested by Delhi Police on spot-fixing allegations – from hotel rooms booked in their names at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. The police has received legal permission to take mirror images of the laptop and also CCTV footage from the hotel to further investigate into the whole scandal.Items seized include laptops, iPads, mobile phones, diaries written in English and “what appears to be” Malayalam, and cricket kits. Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) in Mumbai, said they had reason to believe the items belonged to Sreesanth and Janardhan, and that they will be important clues in the ongoing investigations.Sreesanth’s room was not in the hotel where the Rajasthan Royals team stayed for their match against Mumbai Indians. Sreesanth was reportedly told in Jaipur that he was not playing the match, and only a compact group of 13 or 14 players was to travel. “Yesterday we received information that Sreesanth had independently booked himself into a five-star hotel,” Roy said. “I say independent because this is not where his team stayed.”We worked out that information. Yesterday we searched two rooms, which were issued in the names of Sreesanth and Jiju Janardhan. The search of Sreesanth’s room shows that it was lived in, it was inhabited. We have recovered a laptop, which is here before you, an iPad, a mobile phone, cash, a data card, some diaries which appear to be in the handwriting of Sreesanth – some [in] English, some [in] what appears to be Malayalam. We have also recovered some cricket kit, clothing etc.”The search of the other room shows it was lived in. We have recovered an iPad, a mobile phone and some personal belongings.” Roy didn’t rule out asking for the custody of Sreesanth and Janardhan depending on what their investigations further reveal.Roy said the hotel rooms were booked by Tamarind Tours and Travels. “We have tried to recreate events that led to the booking of this room,” Roy said. “We have reason to believe Sreeanth and Jiju checked into the hotel late in the night on the 13th of this month. We are recreating their movements on the 14th and the 15th.”We are also in the process of obtaining CCTV feed to understand who are the visitors, if any, who visited him when he was staying there. What were his movements? We have obtained the permission to take a mirror image of the laptops and phones, so that we can begin the process of analysing these gadgets to further aid our investigation. We believe seizure is important given the direction in which the spot-fixing investigations are headed.”On May 14 – more than a day before the three cricketers were arrested – police also arrested an alleged bookmaker called Ramesh Vyas from Mumbai’s Kalbadevi area. The items seized there, Roy said, led them to names of bookies who are also being investigated by Delhi Police.Roy said 13 of the 92 mobile phones seized from Vyas’ premises “were used by him to facilitate connecting Indian bookies with bookies in Pakistan via conference call”. Roy said the police has arrested two more bookies – named Praveen Bera and Pankaj Shah (alias Lotus, alias Pappu) – subsequent to that first arrest.”The interrogation of Ramesh Vyas revealed that he was in touch with certain bookies whose names had figured in the current IPL fixing issue,” Roy said. “We followed this lead, and we also found that the same bookies not only figure in calls made by Ramesh Vyas, but his account books also have transactions in them that lead to common bookies.”After we arrested Ramesh Vyas, we recovered his accounts book, which showed names of bookies that the Delhi Police is also investigating. Some of those bookies, it is reported, have been in touch with these players.”Cases have been registered under the Gambling Act and Indian Penal Code sections that pertain to cheating and forgery. All charges are non-bailable, Roy said.

Finch struck again when Jack Carson, on seven, aimed a blow on the leg side and Josh Baker pulled off a fine low catch after running in from deep square leg.Dillon Pennington came into the attack and soon accounted for Henry Crocombe ,who was caught off a leading edge by Ed Barnard at cover.Dan Ibrahim went within six runs of becoming the youngest century-maker in the history of County Championship cricket before falling to Worcestershire captain, Joe Leach.
