New Zealand have suffered a major blow ahead of the second Test against West Indies in Jamaica after Daniel Vettori was ruled out with groin strain.Vettori did not have a significant impact on the opening match in Antigua, taking 1 for 124 in 51 overs as New Zealand lost by nine wickets, but he remains a key part of their Test attack. His absence creates the possibility of a debut for Tarun Nethula, the 29-year-old legspinner, at Sabina Park but with a first-class batting average of 15.54 he will not bring the all-round strengths provided by Vettori.”Dan had some discomfort while in the field on day three of the first Test match with assessment confirming an adductor injury,” Paul Close, the New Zealand physiotherapist, said. “It was managed during the match but further assessment has indicated he will not be fully fit in time for the next Test.”Dan will return to New Zealand where here will be monitored closely and undergo a period of rehabilitation. He will require a rest from bowling and his return date will be determined by how well he responds to the treatment.”Vettori became New Zealand’s most capped Test cricketer during the opening match of the series when he over took Stephen Fleming with 112 appearances. The injury could put him in doubt for the Test series against India which begins on August 23 in Hyderabad.”It’s a huge loss, not just the performance on the field which he’s done for a number of years consistently and really led us from that point of view, but also what he offers in the change-room and when we’re out on the field,” the New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum said. “You know you’ve got that experience to call on for some of the younger bowlers.”Even the batters within the group as well, he’s had a phenomenal career and we hope he rests up and gets himself recuperated and comes back in a couple of months’ time for us and we’re able to get him back into a team that’s performing a bit better than we have of late.”

Ellyse Perry quits football club

Ellyse Perry, the Australian allrounder, has quit her soccer club as she aims to continue playing both cricket and football at the elite level

ESPNcricinfo staff31-May-2012Ellyse Perry, the Australian allrounder, has quit her soccer club as she aims to continue playing both cricket and football at the elite level. Perry was told by Canberra United earlier this week that she needed to fully commit to the club, which would mean giving up cricket, or move on.”I still want to pursue my goals of playing both cricket and football at the highest possible level and as such I feel it is important for me to explore avenues which enable me to do so,” Perry said in a statement. “I thank Canberra United and its wonderful community for all their great support over the last three seasons and I wish everyone involved at the club the very best for the future and in defending the W-League title next season.”A dual international who has played in both cricket and soccer World Cups, Perry has successfully split her time between the sports for five years. However, she will need to find a new football club if that is to continue.Earlier this year Melissa Barbieri, the captain of the Matildas, the Australia women’s soccer team, said it was likely women’s soccer coaches would begin to want their players “to be more professional, without having the professional means”.”A team won’t pay their players a professional wage but they will expect them to be at training five nights a week and that contributes to the fact that they are getting better,” Barbieri told Daily Life in February. “Girls are making sacrifices but it is for the good of the game, and those girls that have made those sacrifices are now getting contracts overseas and getting paid.”

Zimbabwe seek consolation win

ESPNcricinfo previews the final ODI between Zimbabwe and Pakistan at Harare

Pakistan may not have been beaten, but Mohammad Hafeez says they have been tested•AFP

September 14, Harare Sports Club
Start time 0930 (0730 GMT)Big PictureZimbabwe will want to stop their series against Pakistan from spiralling into a failure and the final ODI is their last chance to do so before the Twenty20s start. So far, they have dramatically swung from a team that can compete fiercely, to one that can be comprehensively outplayed by the same opposition.Their problems are as much in the mind as they are to do with skill and, if Zimbabwe hope to punch above their weight, they will have to start by showing more self-confidence. It’s a problem that has plagued them in the past and although they gained belief from the Bangladesh series, that good work is now on the verge of being undone. On a good batting surface, they will have to apply themselves with less inhibition than they have done so far. Importantly, Zimbabwe will have to show more energy and purpose in the field to back up the performances of their bowlers. Harare does not offer much for either the seamers or the spinners but if they can maintain accuracy and discipline, they should be rewarded. For Pakistan, two of the three things they set out to achieve on this tour have been completed. They have created a chance to introduce a few more youngsters into the team and test different combinations, which was one of the major aims of their journey. Although they were pushed hard in the first match, they regrouped strongly to put on a sterling all-round performance in the second.Mohammad Hafeez has underlined his role as a premier allrounder but some of the other members of the squad will also want to use the opportunity to make an impression – particularly the youngsters and players making their comebacks. Sohail Tanvir has made a convincing comeback while Imran Farhat also put his hand up. It will be up to the other fringe members of the squad to capitalise on the chances they may get, especially against opponents struggling to stay above water.Form guide (most recent first)Zimbabwe LLLLW
Pakistan WWWWLIn the spotlightThe decision to move Brendan Taylor down the order has worked well but his replacement at the top, Chamu Chibhabha, has yet to put on a convincing performance. Chibhabha has not played for the national team since December last year and missed out on the World Cup squad. He has over 2500 runs in domestic cricket and has shown signs of real improvement recently. Like many of his fellow players, Chibhabha has shown immense commitment and spent large amounts of time during the Test match hitting balls in the nets with Grant Flower. Now, he has to apply his technique on the field. He is a livewire behind the stumps, but Adnan Akmal has not had the same feistiness with the bat. Kepler Wessels criticised his temperament in one-day cricket and his inability to accelerate the run-rate. Although he has only batted once in the series so far, Adnan will want to cement his place by putting on a convincing performance with the bat, as well as with the gloves. His List A statistics indicate that he is capable of scoring quickly, with a strike-rate of 82.70, but he will want to outdo his average at that level, which is just 21.31.Team newsZimbabwe’s idea of playing two frontline seamers and two spinners backfired on them on Sunday and they may choose to return to a three-pronged pace attack with Kyle Jarvis returning in place of Prosper Utseya. The No. 6 position is still a contentious one and Malcolm Waller had not been able to make it his own in two attempts. Craig Ervine, Forster Mutizwa and Regis Chakabva are all part of the squad and one of the three could be given the opportunity to make a case for themselves there.Zimbabwe: (probable) 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Chamu Chibhabha, 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Brendan Taylor (capt), 5 Tatenda Taibu (wk), 6 Craig Ervine / Forster Mutizwa / Regis Chakabva, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Ray Price, 9 Brian Vitori, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Chris MpofuPakistan have given themselves an ideal opportunity to experiment, but will have to juggle cleverly to include their fringe players. Rameez Raja and Yasir Shah could be brought into the side although it will be harsh to drop Imran Farhat after his impressive showing in the second match. One of Junaid Khan, who injured his ankle during that match but returned to complete his spell, or Aizaz Cheema may have to make way for Sohail Khan, and Asad Shafiq could to slot in at No. 3 although Pakistan are unlikely to leave Younis Khan out.Pakistan: (probable) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat / Rameez Raja, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Adnan Akmal (wk), 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 Junaid Khan / Sohail Khan, 11 Aizaz CheemaPitch and conditions Despite Zimbabwe’s tentative approach to batting in the first innings on Sunday, the Harare pitch remains batsmen-friendly. Any advantage for the seamers will dissipate after the first hour of play and chances are the team that wins the toss will bowl first to exploit that. Another perfect summer’s day in Africa is expected to close off the ODI series.Stats and trivia Mohammad Hafeez is enjoying his most successful year in ODI cricket. He has played 23 matches, and scored 865 runs at an average of 43.25. All three of his centuries were scored in 2011. Elton Chigumbura suffered his worst averages with the bat, 21.06, and the ball, 158.50, when he was captain last season. Since being relieved of the responsibility, he has scored 107 runs at an average of 21.40 and taken five wickets.Quotes”I do firmly believe that we have progressed and one of the reasons for that is a more consistent selection policy. We stick by our players and give them a chance to succeed.”

“It looked easy but we really worked hard for it. We did all the basics right.”

Chandimal, Gunaratne carry Ruhuna to win

A round-up of the first match-day of the Sri Lanka Cricket Inter-Provincial Twenty20

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jul-2011Ruhuna kicked-off the Sri Lanka Cricket Inter-Provincial Twenty20 Tournament with a convincing 40-run win against Kandurata at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Being asked to bat, Ruhuna put on a competitive 154 for 7, driven by a knock of 63 off 53 balls by Dinesh Chandimal. The chase was off to a terrible start, as offpinner Janaka Gunaratne – who opened the bowling for Ruhuna – and some poor running combined to reduce Kandurata to 4 for 3 in the fourth over. Kandurata didn’t recover, slipping to 27 for 5 and 30 for 6, before a rapid, unbeaten 55 from No. 8 Farveez Maharoof carried them to a respectable 114 for 7 in 20.In the other game of the day at the same venue, Wayamba gained a point against Basnahira by winning a bowl-out, after the match was abandoned due to rain without a ball being bowled.

Durham’s Ben Stokes came close to earning a place in the record books in the County Championship Division One match against Hampshire on Sunday. Stokes hit the first five balls of an over from Hampshire’s Liam Dawson for six – but could only manage a single off the last delivery. The 19-year-old came close to recording career-best batting and bowling performances on the same day at the Rose Bowl. Stokes took six wickets for 68 runs, comfortably his best bowling, to wrap up the Hampshire first innings. He then hit an unbeaten 135, just 26 short of his best batting as Durham took merciless command.Left-arm spinner Dawson had no answer to Stokes’ belligerence, but escaped the humiliation of conceding six consecutive sixes when the batsman could only edge his final ball to fine leg. Durham captain Phil Mustard declared soon afterwards, with Stokes having hit 13 fours and six sixes in his remarkable 145-ball innings. At that stage, with first-innings centurion Dale Benkenstein 55 not out, Durham were able to set Hampshire an improbable 490 to win in three sessions and 20 overs.Hampshire resumed the third day at 280 for 6 in response to Durham’s 473 – and Stokes was in the middle of the action straight away. He hustled out Dominic Cork, Danny Briggs and Simon Jones in a five-ball spell with his medium pace to put Durham firmly in control. In the previous over, Callum Thorp had sent back Nic Pothas for 56, but with the healthy first-innings lead of 179, Mustard declined the opportunity to enforce the follow-on.Hampshire were hampered immediately by injuries to former England bowlers Jones and Cork. Injury-troubled Jones managed only nine balls before limping off with a groin strain, and Cork’s contribution was only 14 balls before he too was forced out of the attack with the same problem.Durham made the most of their absence. Michael Di Venuto and Scott Borthwick put on 45 for the first wicket before two big partnerships took the match away from the hosts. Stokes and Gordon Muchall put on 88 for the third wicket, then Stokes and Benkenstein hammered home their advantage on a gentle-paced wicket with a stand of 140 for the fourth. When Mustard declared, Durham were a formidable 310 for 3, but Hampshire openers Jimmy Adams and Dawson found batting just as easy as their opponents had done. Even with another former England bowler, Steve Harmison, available after recovering from a hand injury sustained earlier in the match, Durham were soon on the defensive. At the close, still 403 behind, Hampshire had recovered to 87 without loss. Adams was 47 not out, and Dawson, having got over his mauling at the hands of Stokes, was unbeaten with 35.

Andrew Hall’s unbeaten hundred helped Northants build a sizeable lead•Getty ImagesNorthamptonshire captain Andrew Hall struck a magnificent century to put Kent to the sword on the second day of the County Championship Division Two clash at Wantage Road. Former South Africa international Hall’s superb knock of 141 not out off 239 balls included 14 fours and four sixes and is the 12th ton of his first-class career. He was part of a sixth-wicket partnership of 114 with wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien, who blasted 71 off 101 balls, which tilted the match firmly in Northamptonshire’s favour as they recovered from 124 for 5 to reach 429 for 7 at the close. They began the day on 86 for 3, 116 runs behind Kent, who they bowled out for just 202 yesterday, with Mal Loye resuming on 42 and David Sales on 14. Loye became the first batsman in the match to make a half-century, his coming off 131 balls, in the third over of the day. But he walked two overs later on 51 when he was trapped lbw by paceman Robbie Joseph and Sales later went in the same fashion for 31 off the bowling of Darren Stevens.Hall and O’Brien, both former Kent men, then made the first 50 partnership of the match between them as they guided their team to 187 for 5 at lunch. Hall ran two to put Northamptonshire ahead in the 79th over before Ireland international O’Brien reached 50 off 89 balls with a four smashed through cover.Joseph then claimed a vital breakthrough for Kent by pinning O’Brien lbw in the fourth over after the second new ball was taken. Hall went on to complete his half-century off 115 balls later in that over as he and Chaminda Vaas added 50 between them before tea to leave the hosts on 288 for 6.Hall was given a reprieve on 85 in the seventh over of the evening session when his attempted sweep off James Tredwell came off Kent wicketkeeper Geraint Jones and was dropped by Martin van Jaarsveld at slip. But Vaas (27) did not survive when he became the fifth Northamptonshire player to be given out lbw, this time off the bowling of Matt Coles, to end apartnership of 77.Hall then reached his century off 211 balls with a four through extra cover off Coles before James Middlebrook reached 50 off 70 deliveries by launching Joe Denly for six over square leg.The eighth-wicket pair added 114 runs between them with Middlebrook finishing the day unbeaten on 50 with the hosts utterly dominant.

Tasmania comprehensively dominated the first day against Western Australia, where Mark Cosgrove almost made as many as the entire Warriors side. At stumps, Cosgrove was unbeaten on 90 with Alex Doolan on 48, as the Tigers moved on to 1 for 146 and extended their lead to 38 runs following their excellent bowling effort.James Faulkner skittled the Western Australia top order after George Bailey sent the visitors in, and Luke Butterworth also helped run through the Warriors, who were dismissed before lunch for 108. Marcus North, fresh from his Test axing, could only manage 2 before he was trapped lbw by Faulkner, who finished with 3 for 15.Faulkner had kicked off the chaos by throwing down the stumps in his follow through to have Wes Robinson run out for 9, and he soon got rid of Liam Davis, who top-edged a pull on 20, and Adam Voges caught behind first ball. The Warriors were lucky to even reach triple figures after crashing to 9 for 62; only a last-wicket stand between Ryan Duffield and Michael Hogan saved their blushes. It looked like Tasmania might struggle just as much when Hogan struck in the third over with Ed Cowan caught at slip for a duck, but Cosgrove and Doolan steadied proceedings. Michael Beer ended the day with 0 for 27 from eight overs after being released from the Test squad to get some overs under his belt.

Newcastle transfer news on Zaniolo

Newcastle United have now sent scouts to watch Nicolo Zaniolo in action tonight ahead of a potential move in the summer.

The Lowdown: Fine season

Zaniolo is enjoying a fine season at AS Roma under Jose Mourinho, where he has managed to score seven goals and make a further eight assists in 36 games in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He is set to play against Leicester City in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) semi-final tonight, after scoring an impressive hat-trick in the quarter-finals against Bodo/Glimt to send them through.

The Latest: Scouts sent

As per the Rome edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the St. James’ Park faithful have now sent club officials to watch Zaniolo play, as they ‘hope’ to sign him in the summer.

There have been talks over a new deal at the Serie A club, but they are ‘yet to get anywhere’, and so the North East club remain in the picture for his signature.

However, they will face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and AC Milan.

The Verdict: Sign

Zaniolo has shown so much promise from such a young age, as journalist Zach Lowy sung his praises when he was just 19, claiming that he has a ‘deadly’ left foot on top of other assets.

He has even been likened to Tyneside and England legend Paul Gascoigne, as his agent Claudio Vigorelli claims that he ‘resembles Gascoigne’ due to his ‘physical qualities’, adding that his technique is ‘devastating’ and has unique ‘pace and muscle’ for a ‘creative’ player (The Daily Mail).

Nonetheless, at six-foot-three, Zaniolo should be able to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League, and his added flair makes him a complete threat.

It is scary to think that he is still only 22 years of age, and so the summer is the perfect time for the Magpies to snap up the Italy international as he approaches his prime.
