Collymore likens Newcastle United captain Lascelles to Gerrard

Stan Collymore has suggested that Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles shares similar qualities to former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

Lascelles has impressed at St James’ Park this season, guiding the team to three wins and a draw in seven Premier League fixtures.

The 23-year-old has marshalled from the back, but he has also scored twice to give the Magpies all three points.

Collymore, who played for Liverpool during his career, believes that manager Rafael Benitez may have another Gerrard on his hands.

The Spanish coach worked with the Liverpool legend at Anfield, and Collymore has suggested that the ex-Real Madrid manager is now moulding Lascelles into a similar version.

In his column for The Mirror the football pundit said:

“[Lascelles] is happy to call himself out, happy to call out teammates and his club, if he needs to. He demands standards, he is not afraid to ask questions and is a reminder that leadership is always an important quality. And where Lascelles is fortunate is that he has a boss in Rafa Benitez who worked at Liverpool with arguably the best captain in England – and maybe even the world – during the past 20 years.

“[Benitez] will have recognised how Gerrard managed Liverpool dressing rooms, something he can pass on to Lascelles. If Benitez has found a lite version of Gerrard in the Newcastle skipper, he will be very, very pleased.”

Benitez faced his former club on Sunday, and it was a positive result for the North-East outfit as they managed to seal a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park.

Philippe Coutinho put the Reds ahead with a stunning individual effort, but a matter of minutes later, Joselu found an equaliser.

Newcastle managed to frustrate Liverpool and pick up a point, which leaves them ninth in the league table.

Rangers should hang on to Clint Hill says Redknapp

As reported by The Daily Mail, Clint Hill’s former manager Harry Redknapp has given his backing to the 38 year to win another contract at Ibrox this summer.

What’s the word?

Hill is a former captain of Redknapp’s, the two working together when they were both at Queens Park Rangers. Now the defender’s former boss reckons he can go on to have more seasons full of good form in Glasgow.

As quoted by The Daily Mail, Redknapp said:

The new manager at Rangers would have a leader on the pitch if Clint stays. If they don’t keep him, I’m sure someone else will snap him up because I definitely think there are another couple of years left in him. As a manager, he is the type you want in your team any day of the week.

Hill has been in fantastic form for Rangers so far this season but can he really have another campaign like this one, or is the inevitable decline about to come?

Past it?

At 38 years old, it’s clear that Clint Hill is no spring chicken. However, what he lacks in pace is more than repaid with his leadership and determination. Scoring 6 goals so far this season, he’s also made an unlikely impact on the club’s internal scoring charts.

His understanding and reading of the game from centre back is arguably second to none in the Scottish Premiership.

He also made himself a Rangers icon with his goal in the final minutes of the recent derby at Celtic Park.

On this season’s showing he’s more than worth a new contract, but it will be interesting to see what decision Caixinha takes in one of his first big decisions at the club.

Euro 2016 Group F Preview

Group F – Austria, Hungary, Iceland, Portugal

Prediction: Portugal, Austria, Iceland, Hungary

The teams of Group F will have to wait until the 14th June to kick off their tournament. It won’t matter too much to Iceland and Hungary, however, who have had to wait a long time to compete in a European Championships. Hungary since 1972, whilst Iceland have never competed in the Euros.

It may also be worth the wait for the other two teams in this group, too, as both Portugal and Austria will fancy their chances of doing something special in this edition of the tournament.

Austria hit form in qualifying, and their all-action team talisman David Alaba will be the heartbeat of their side in the tournament just as he was in qualifying. But he’ll be surrounded by quite a few form players. Christian Fuchs has had an incredible season winning the Premier League with Leicester, and he’ll captain his country this summer alongside Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic and Werder Bremen’s free-kick wizard Zlatko Junuzovic. If they can replicate their qualifying form – nine wins and a draw in ten games – they could be dark horses for the tournament.

Whilst Portugal themselves could be considered dark horses. You get the feeling that any team with Cristiano Ronaldo always has the potential to go far in the tournament, but Portugal have a very exciting young team these days. Ruben Neves, Renato Sanches, Andre Gomes, Bernardo Silva and William Carvalho will all be part of the supporting cast for the main attraction that is Cristiano Ronaldo. Like Turkey in Group D, this tournament may come too early for Portugal’s youngsters, but the combination of a reasonably soft group and a genuine world beater up front makes them serious contenders – top the group, get a nice last 16 draw and anything can happen once the form starts flowing!

The other two teams are simply happy to be at the finals. But that doesn’t mean they can do nothing at all in the tournament. Most of Hungary’s players play in their own domestic league, but English audiences will be familiar with Gabor Kiraly – at 40 years old, he could become the oldest ever player at the European Championships – captain Zoltan Gera and striker Tamas Priskin. Though perhaps Hungary’s most dangerous player will be Adam Szalai.

Iceland, however, have Gylfi Sigurdsson and a 37 year old Eidur Gudjohnsen. Alfred Finbogasson will be a danger man up front, whilst Basel’s Birkir Bjarnasson will keep things nice and tidy in the midfield.

Things to watch out for: Two dark horses, Cristiano Ronaldo babysitting young talent, Iceland and Hungary fans enjoying their moment in the sun.

France boss Deschamps defends MbappeStriker scored hat-trick in historic winLuis Enrique had criticised PSG strikerWHAT HAPPENED?

Mbappe scored a hat-trick – including his 300th career goal – as France beat Gibraltar 14-0 on Saturday, the biggest margin of victory in European Championship qualifying history. The match came just days after Mbappe's club manager, Enrique, criticised the Paris Saint-Germain striker's overall contribution to his team. It's fair to say that France boss Deschamps didn't agree.

Mbappe has enjoyed a predictably excellent start to the season, scoring 15 goals in 15 games in all competitions. However, though PSG are top of Ligue 1, the French champions have not always convinced during the early months of Enrique's tenure. The Spanish coach wants more from his stars, especially Mbappe.

WHAT DESCHAMPS SAID

When asked by RMC about Mbappe's performance after the historic victory, Deschamps laughed in reference to Enrique's comments and said: "I expect more from him. In his role as captain, he is perfect. He is an extraordinary player. Everything. He can bring in serenity to the group, not only on the field."

WHAT DID LUIS ENRIQUE SAY?

After Mbappe scored a hat-trick in PSG's 3-0 win against Reims last weekend, Enrique said: "I am not very happy with Kylian [Mbappe] today. Why? Because managers are so strange. About goals, I don’t have to say anything, but I think he can help the team more in a different way. I told that to him first (before you) because it’s not a private conversation. We think Kylian is one of the best players in the world. No doubt. But we need more and we want him doing more things."

Agora, sobretudo pelo Fla estar disposto a vender Piris, que estava fora dos planos de Jorge Jesus, um novo negócio com o Braga deve sair. A aguardar.

Adaptable New Zealand bank on successful template

After reaching their second successive semi-final in a global event, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson stressed on the importance of ‘smart cricket’ to get them past a tricky opposition

Sidharth Monga29-Mar-20161:31

We’ve shown an ability to adapt to conditions – Munro

They all say that you have to play the big matches as if it were just another game. New Zealand might have that covered through their captain Kane Williamson. At the best of the times he is understated and levelled, but when you see that a buzzing phone bothers him more than a question about the perceived lack of ruthlessness in the World Cup final, you know this team is taking it as just another game. When asked about “the time of their lives” in the World Cup last year, having come up short against “ruthless” Australians, and what lessons they took from there, Williamson said: “Australia are a very good cricket side. They beat us. That’s fine. That can happen in cricket.”From our perspective we want to keep improving as a unit. We are not looking too far down the track, of changing personalities or looking to make drastic changes. We just want to keep taking small steps forward as a team. Hope that brings a consistent improvement. Respect the game, you can win, you can lose. T20 is more fickle than any format. Go into the game, play fearless cricket, and play smart cricket as well.”Apart from fearless cricket, New Zealand have played a lot of canny cricket. Their selections, and success thereof in all four matches, have come as a surprise for others, but it is business as usual for Williamson and coach Mike Hesson. “I think in terms of my perspective and our coach they are not surprises to us,” Williamson said. “We are simply trying to pick horses for courses, our best side for the given conditions against the given opposition at that point of time. That certainly won’t change.”The success of New Zealand has been the readiness of replacements whenever they are called upon. Mitchell McClenaghan was called in at the last minute in Dharamsala against Australia, and he ended up as the Man of the Match. Tim Southee and Trent Boult, who have not played any game in this World T20, will be a chance here: David Willey has swung the ball in matches in Delhi. Williamson said he didn’t need to bother about that.”They’re very much ready to go,” Williamson said. “Like I said, we still haven’t decided on our side. We will be looking closely at the conditions and the history I suppose of what the wicket has produced and try and pick up a side.”It doesn’t rule out the importance of the two main spinners, though. “Our spinners have been brilliant on surfaces that have suited spin bowling,” Williamson said. “And perhaps the best track we played on in Mohali, they still played a big part. We’re not quite sure what to expect. A few games have been played on it [the Delhi pitch] recently.”A phone kept buzzing, Williamson kept looking at the media manager, and then he provided the most fun answer when asked about the amount of travel New Zealand have had to undertake in playing all their four league matches at different venues. In Dharamsala they got their first look of the pitch on the day of the match. By comparison England have played only in two venues, both of which are hosting semi-finals.”That’s great,” Williamson said. “We’ve been able to see more of India than most opposition sides. It’s one of those things. Surely it just happened by co-incidence? They guys embraced it, embraced the flights and enjoyed the variety of hotels.”

'Torcida do Fluminense ficará no lado direito do Maraca', diz Rubens Lopes

ICC's withholding of funds 'unlawful' – SLC

Sri Lanka Cricket has expressed shock at its recent treatment by the ICC, and has described the ICC’s withholding of funds due to the board as “unlawful”

Andrew Fidel Fernando20-Apr-2015

The formation of an interim committee led by Sidath Wettimuny has become a cause of a controversy between Sri Lanka Cricket and the ICC•AFP

Sri Lanka Cricket has expressed shock at its recent treatment by the ICC, and has described the ICC’s withholding of funds due to the board as “unlawful”. SLC also said the ICC’s account of what transpired at the April 16 board meeting was “misleading”, and has provided its own version of events, which suggest the ICC had been repeatedly informed of developments within SLC, particularly pertaining to the appointment of the interim committee.”SLC is shocked by the purported decision said to have been suddenly taken to ‘withhold’ monies which are now lawfully due and payable by ICC to SLC by way of the Financial Distributions for the T20 World Cup 2014 and the World Cup 2015,” a board release said.”We would point out that these are monies which were due and payable by ICC to SLC from long prior to the appointment of the Interim Committee. Further, these are monies which are payable by ICC to SLC, irrespective of the body which is managing SLC for the time being.”The amount, believed to be around $10 million dollars, is vital to SLC in the short-term, as the board had budgeted to make loan repayments with that sum – some of it to ICC itself. The interim committee, which was appointed on March 31, had inherited large debts from previous administrations.”SLC reminds ICC that these monies are lawfully due and payable to SLC and that the arbitrary and unlawful withholding of these monies will cause grave damage to cricket in Sri Lanka.”SLC also took issue with the portion of an ICC media release that read: According to SLC, it had sent ICC a letter dated April 2, containing the “background of to the appointment of an interim committee pending the holding of Elections.” SLC said this letter had been referred to in a meeting between interim committee member Nuski Mohamed and ICC General Counsel Iain Higgins on April 14, when the two had also “discussed, in detail, matters in relation to the status of the interim committee of SLC, and also handed over some relevant documents.” This meeting took place on the recommendation of ICC chairman N Srinivasan, SLC said. Both ICC and SLC agree that Mohamed was invited to the April 16 board meeting. But SLC said that it was only after the meeting had begun that Mohamed had any clue that he would be requested, by Srinivasan, to attend only as an observer. “Mr. Mohamed declined to accept the status of an ‘observer’ and reiterated that SLC was a full member of ICC and was entitled to participate in the meeting as a full member,” SLC said. “He stated that (he) could not compromise the position of SLC by participating as an ‘observer’.””The chairman then requested Mr Mohamed to leave the meeting room for a short while in order to discuss the matter with the other members of the board.” Mohamed took no part in the meeting after that, though other board members, including the PCB’s representative, were understood to have supported Mohamed’s full participation in the meeting.PCB chairman Shahryar Khan said he had urged the ICC board to allow Mohamed to represent SLC. “I tried to convince the Board that its not a military coup in Sri Lanka so let give them six to nine months to get their board elect according to the constitution,” he said. “I suggested that for a while let them represent Sri Lanka Cricket in the ICC meeting but none other than Pakistan and Zimbabwe supported them. ICC asked SLC to attend the meeting as an observer not as full member (who can’t vote) but the SLC representative did not accept that for the sovereignty of his country.”The ICC’s April 16 release had also said that the board supported “a recommendation of the ICC Governance Review Committee that it should write to the sports minister of Sri Lanka seeking a full and proper explanation of its intervention that prima facie puts SLC in breach of the ICC’s constitution.” However, both SLC and Sri Lanka’s sports ministry have said that no correspondence from the ICC has been received to date.”SLC trusts that, ICC will ensure that the current issue is resolved amicably and expeditiously to the satisfaction of all parties, keeping in mind the excellent relationship between SLC and ICC which has spanned decades,” the release said.
