Cutting added to 'A' tour injury list

Ben Cutting, the Queensland fast bowler, has become the third paceman to withdraw from Australia A’s tour of England due to injury

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jul-2012Ben Cutting, the Queensland fast bowler, has become the third paceman to withdraw from Australia A’s tour of England due to injury, flying home following the conclusion of the tourists’ opening match against Derbyshire.Cutting, 25, had not been selected in the XI for the match, and was diagnosed with a back problem that necessitated his return home.In departing early from the tour, Cutting joined Pat Cummins and James Pattinson as fast bowlers unable to gain valuable experience in English climes on the tour due to injury.Cummins did not make the start of the tour, picking up a side strain during the preceding ODI tour by the senior team and heading home to Sydney.Pattinson played in the final two matches of that series before complaining of an abdominal strain and being sent home as Australia A prepared for their tour with a training camp in Southampton.Alister McDermott and Nathan Coulter-Nile were called into the squad in place of Cummins and Pattinson, and Cutting’s injury has enhanced their chances of taking part in the next match of the tour, against Durham from Wednesday.

Lancashire announce record loss

Lancashire, the reigning county champions, lost almost £4 million in 2011, reflecting the ongoing costs of redeveloping Old Trafford. The club’s annual report included a loss of £1.8m in “accelerated depreciation” to account for assets demolished as part of the rebuilding, and more than half a million in legal fees in challenging a judicial review. The figure of £3.96m sets a new record deficit by a first-class English county, beating by some distance the £2.1m losses recorded by Lancashire and Warwickshire last year. However, Lancashire said the The Point, the eye-catching but controversial conference centre opened in 2010, had started to drive revenue, with operating profit increasing by more than £700,000 on the forecast, after the “exceptional costs” were accounted for.The development work, which will see £40m spent on upgrades, also encompasses new grandstands, player and media facilities being grafted on to Old Trafford, as well as work on a new pavilion, scheduled to open ahead of the 2013 season, when Lancashire are due to host Test cricket again for the first time since 2009.Lee Morgan, Lancashire’s finance and operations director, said: “The nature of this result is a continuing reflection of the difficulties faced with building a new stadium on an existing site. However, despite the difficulties faced we are still very much on course to achieve our goals and ultimately return to a vibrant and profitable cricket club and start to fulfil the potential that all at the club believe we are capable of.”

Ireland wrap up innings victory

Ireland wrapped up victory by an innings and 11 runs over a mismatched but game Canada side on the second day of their Intercontinental Cup 2011-13 match

Twenty three wickets fell and over 400 runs were scored on a manic day in Dublin as Ireland wrapped up victory by an innings and 11 runs over a mismatched but game Canada side on the second day of their Intercontinental Cup 2011-13 match. Offspinner Albert van der Merve was the bowling star for Ireland, picking up eight wickets, but it was Rizwan Cheema’s blistering 97 that lit up the day’s play amid the carnage.Ireland had enforced the follow on after Canada had slumped to 194 from 114 for 2 in their first innings, and the visitors were in trouble from the start, with the top four batsmen back in the dressing room and the team still trailing by over 200 runs. That’s when Cheema decided to take matters into his own hands and launched a stunning counterattack. van der Merwe was the first to feel his fury, as Cheema plundered 23 runs from one over. He smashed the first ball for six over long-on, straight drove the second for four, the third cleared the long-on boundary again while the fourth was slogged over deep-midwicket for a third six.Left-arm spinner George Dockrell was Cheema’s next victim as Cheema decided everything had to go. This time it was two fours and two sixes in four balls; the first hacked away past backward point, the second a huge hit over extra cover. Then, just to show that he was not all brute force, Cheema swept Dockrell fine for another four before resorting back to type and sending the ball over the rope at cow corner. He brought up his 50 from just 21 balls and just kept going, with Dockrell bearing the brunt as Cheema savaged him for three sixes and two fours from consecutive overs. The good times couldn’t last though and Cheema’s extraordinary innings came to a close just three runs short of a hundred, when he got a thin edge down the legside off Phil Eaglestone. In all, Cheema hit 10 sixes and six fours and took just 45 balls for his 97.Unfortunately for Canada, no one else made more than 34 in the second innings, and they were bowled out for 257, with Dockrell and van der Merve picking up three wickets apiece to wrap up the game with two full days remaining.Ireland had begun the day on 435 for 7 and managed to extend that to 462 thanks to John Mooney’s 40. Canada got off to a steady start, with Nitish Kumar and Ruvindu Gunasekera adding 87 for the second wicket, but van der Merwe took three quick wickets, dismissing Kumar for 27, Zeeshand Siddiqi for 14 Gunasekera for a well-made 66 to start the slide. Cheema did make a quickfire 28, studded with two fours and three sixes, a hint of what was to come, and Hamza Tariq chipped in with 33, but Canada were unable to cope with van der Merve, who finished with figures of 5 for 70 in the first innings and 8 for 131 in the match.

All eyes on conditions with trophy up for grabs

It was overcast and damp in Manchester on Friday, the sort of conditions that make England a force to be reckoned with in one-day cricket, but the forecast for match-day is more sunshine and less cloud

Andrew McGlashan at Old Trafford08-Jul-2011It was overcast and damp in Manchester on Friday, the sort of conditions that make England a force to be reckoned with in one-day cricket, but the forecast for match-day is more sunshine and less cloud. If the series to date is any guide that will give Sri Lanka a good chance of bouncing straight back from their Trent Bridge thrashing to take the one-day series, even though the momentum is with the hosts. The four matches, which have left the series tied at 2-2, have just reinforced where these two teams’ strengths lie. Under cloudy, bowler-friendly conditions, at The Oval and Trent Bridge England have demolished their opponents, led by James Anderson; on warmer – you could say proper summer days – Sri Lanka’s subcontinental skills of spin and wristy batting have come to fore.England were delighted not just by overhead conditions in Nottingham, but also the 22 yards produced by the groundsman. They may not be quite so delighted by what they get at Old Trafford, in what will be the first international since the pitch was turned 90 degrees to face north-south rather than east-west, to avoid the setting sun whenever it decides to appear.Lancashire have only played one-day matches on the ground so far this season, but have filled their side with spin bowlers. Sometimes they have played four – Gary Keedy, Simon Kerrigan, Stephen Parry and Steven Croft – while the opposition have taken note and utilised slow bowling too. In a sense that’s nothing new, Old Trafford has always been a good surface for spin – just ask Monty Panesar, Graeme Swann or Shane Warne. But the pitch is unlikely to have the bounce and carry that England so desire although Jim Cumbes, the Lancashire chief executive, thought it would go through nicely at least from one end.”They used to have pace and carry and I think that may change the characteristics by turning the pitch around,” Alastair Cook said. “Lancashire have been playing three or four spinners. It has changed a little bit.”I think we’re getting a bit too carried away with the wickets,” he added. “To me it’s our skill levels and we haven’t been good at certain times and haven’t won. I think there was a directive sent out by Hugh Morris [managing director of England cricket] at the beginning of the year suggesting what wickets we would like. At certain times squares are quite hard to change, but as an English side we always want carry on the wicket.”Neither team was able to have a look at the pitch, however, as it remained covered throughout the training sessions which were held indoors. Predicting pitches is a notoriously difficult job so decisions on playing elevens are likely to be left until the last minute, although the odds favour an unchanged England side, even if there is temptation to play Samit Patel for his left-arm spin. The slower the better will be the case for Sri Lanka so they can make the most of their spinners, but Tillakaratne Dilshan said he still wanted a balanced attack unlike the spin-heavy combinations that can be used on the subcontinent. Regardless of what conditions confront his team on Saturday, Dilshan believes the main threat will come from Anderson who will have a home crowd supporting him.”In the two matches with flat wickets we won easily and on two seaming wickets they won easily,” Dilshan said. “Anderson is the key man and he’s why we lost two matches. If we get some runs against him we have a good chance.” Intriguingly, Dilshan hinted they have looked at new tactics to Anderson although he wouldn’t confirm exactly what. “It might be to play some shots, you never know,” he said. This game will decide whether Sri Lanka’s tour has been a success or not. They were never expected to win the Tests, but the one-day matches were a very different prospect. If they can secure their first series of the post-Muralitharan era, it will bode well for maintaining their position as a limited-overs force.”We have played very good one-day cricket in last three or four years,” Dilshan said. “We have been the runner’s up in the last two World Cups. We came here as No. 3 in the world now we are No. 2. There is a good balance between senior players and youngsters.”However, Cook knows that, from his point of view, a series victory against Sri Lanka will be a superb way to start his full-time leadership. “My first two series are against India and Sri Lanka, the two World Cup finalists, and we know what strong sides they are,” he said. “It’s something we can win. We wanted to test ourselves against the best.”

'World Cup best build-up for IPL' – Fleming

The IPL closely following the World Cup has meant that the franchises’ squads have not had much time to prepare as a unit, but Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming said that it also means the players can hit the ground running.”With most of our players being in action during the World Cup, lack of match practice will not be an issue,” he said. “Playing the best teams in the world and on our home grounds is the best build-up any player could hope for. We are quietly confident of our prospects. Our core team remains the same, so we look forward to another successful run [Chennai are the defending champions].”Captain MS Dhoni also said he is pleased with the team composition, but a lot will depend on players’ fitness, with key players like Doug Bollinger and Dwayne Bravo currently on the injured list. “The new team is very good. But I have always maintained it’s not about how good the team looks on paper, but how we’re doing on the field. If everyone is fit and all 24 players are available for selection, it’s a very good side.”Chennai retained Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Albie Morkel and M Vijay from the first three seasons’ squad and bought back Michael Hussey, Bollinger, R Ashwin and S Badrinath, among others, during January’s auction. New players in the squad include Faf du Plessis, Bravo, Suraj Randiv, Ben Hilfenhaus, Scott Styris and Tim Southee, while the biggest loss remains Muttiah Muralitharan who will play for Kochi this season.”We have Vijay to start off, and Badri, me, Raina, Albie, Du Plessis … Scott Styris is an allrounder. Michael Hussey [who is in Bangladesh with the Australia team] will also be joining us shortly,” Dhoni said. “So I think we have quite a few players who can get runs when it matters. Murali is a great cricketer, a very good influence in the dressing room, with plenty of ideas. We’ll definitely miss him. We’ll also miss Balaji [who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in the auction].”One player they bought at the auction who will not be available is Australian fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus, who is out of the tournament with injury, according to the team’s website. Tim Southee, who was added to the team after the auction, following his strong show in the World Cup, will take Hilfenhaus’ spot in the side.Chennai play Kolkata in the opening IPL match on April 8 at home.

'I was not prepared for captaincy' – Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan has expressed unhappiness at having the Bangladesh captaincy thrust upon him, and at not being given a free hand with selection following the nine-run defeat in the first one-dayer against Zimbabwe in Mirpur. Shakib, who had earlier turned down leadership of the side, was forced to take over from Mashrafe Mortaza when the seamer injured himself at the start of the New Zealand series. Shakib impressed, both as captain and player, as Bangladesh won that series 4-0. Despite Mortaza’s return, he was asked to continue as captain for the Zimbabwe one-dayers.”I was not prepared to take the job [captaincy],” Shakib said after the defeat. “And I am also not satisfied with my role as a captain. The reasons are numerous, and I cannot detail all of them right at the moment.”Bangladesh’s problems against Zimbabwe began when their seam attack, led by Mortaza, allowed the visitors to get off to a strong start despite conditions that aided the new ball. Their fielding was also substandard, with the Zimbabwe openers surviving several run-out opportunities. Bangladesh’s spinners then brought their side back into the game, dismissing Zimbabwe for 209, but the batsmen – barring Shakib who top-scored with 63 – collapsed in a rash of poor strokes and run-outs.Shakib hinted that he was saddled with a XI that he did not completely agree with. “The captain should have a clearly defined role, but anyway I don’t want to talk about the team. What I can say is that I gave my 100 % as a captain in the field.”Fielding-wise we could not expect more from this team because we had two good fielders in Raqibul Hasan and Naeem Islam out of the team. Those who were in the team are not capable. Actually we can’t expect more from this team as they did what they are capable of.”Raqibul played in the New Zealand series, but made way for Mohammad Ashraful who was given yet another opportunity to revive his flagging international career. Ashraful was a part of the batting failure in Mirpur, a recurring problem that Shakib felt had bogged the team down even in the New Zealand series.”Ordinary batting was the main reason [for the defeat]. The simple thing is we didn’t bat well though the wicket was really good for batting in the second innings. In the end, one can lose the match but the fact was that we played poor cricket today.”We didn’t bat well against New Zealand too and it’s really worrying that we have batted badly five matches in a row. We will lose more matches if we play like this.”

Celtic: David Turnbull close to returning

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull is close to making a return to training, as per The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Turnbull’s absence

Turnbull had been a regular under Ange Postecoglou up until the Scottish League Cup final in December, when he suffered a hamstring injury.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-22/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 22-year-old hasn’t been seen since the Hampden Park triumph, missing the last 13 games in all competitions.

Celtic have impressed without the midfielder, though, winning eight and drawing just one of their last nine Premiership fixtures.

The Latest: Ange’s comments

The Daily Record relayed Postecoglou’s comments to Sky Sports in a story shared on Friday evening.

This is what he had to say regarding Turnbull and Kyogo Furuhashi, sharing a positive update on the former: “Turnbull is almost back training, but Kyogo is nowhere near it.”

The Verdict: Good news

Knowing that Turnbull isn’t far away from training is brilliant news. The Scot has already created 99 chances this season, twice as many as any other Celtic player.

Hailed as ‘phenomenal’ by Alan Hutton, the 22-year-old was an ever-present figure in the Hoops’ line-up prior to his injury, even turning out as a centre-forward on one occasion.

Given his creativity, you’d expect that he’ll be in Postecoglou’s first-choice XI at Parkhead, and it seems that the Hoops boss might not have to wait much longer before he can call upon the midfielder once again.
