Everton fans on Rondon’s training regime

Many Everton fans have been reacting to a revelation which has emerged involving Salomon Rondon.

As per The Daily Mail, the former Newcastle United and West Brom striker has now thrown himself into a hard-hitting new training regime which includes boxing, spinning and extra cardio work.

The coaching staff have been left so impressed by him that they’ve had to warn him that he needs to take days off to recover.

Rondon admitted that he does not feel he is at the level that he would like to be, so he has implemented this regime in order to try and win over the Goodison Park faithful, many of whom have slated him in recent weeks.

The Venezuela international has struggled since signing for the Merseyside club, with no goals in nine games across all competitions so far this season, and some Toffees supporters seem to think that his new regime will not change much.

Rangers: Campbell issues warning to GVB

Giovanni van Bronckhorst may need to make do with what he’s got at Rangers until the end of the season, The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell has warned.

The lowdown

The 46-year-old is expected to take the reins on Monday after being appointed as Steven Gerrard’s successor, but he’ll have to pick up the pieces from Sunday’s Scottish League Cup semi-final defeat against Hibernian.

Rangers are faring better in the Premiership, with a four-point lead over their arch-rivals Celtic at the top of the table, while victory over Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday could promote them into the Group A qualification spots.

However, the club recently announced a loss of £23.5m over the year, taking the total losses under the current regime to £73.8m since 2015 (via The Athletic).

The latest

During The Athletic’s matchday discussion, Campbell was asked whether there will be funds available in January for reinforcements.

The journalist replied: “Budgets are going to be tight as the club needs £7.5m until the end of the season. Maybe trading out a couple could help if the levels aren’t improved in the next 6 weeks but it does feel like GVB will need to improve what he’s got until there is a freshening up in the summer.”

The verdict

This is a Rangers squad which might be on the verge of needing a rebuild.

Connor Goldson’s deal is up at the end of the season, while Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Alfredo Morelos will all be out of contract in 2023 and therefore may have to be sold. Elsewhere, veterans Allan McGregor and Steven Davis may soon retire.

You could argue that Rangers’ January plan needs to be geared towards maximising their budget for that regeneration. That could involve taking some short-term pain and exercising patience with Van Bronckhorst.

However, before taking the job, he apparently sought assurances over the level of backing he’d receive. Could he become frustrated if funds are limited?

Britain’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has frozen $US100 million (£60 million) of UK assets related to Allen Stanford, the Texan billionaire facing charges of fraud.”I am delighted the SFO has been able to secure a freezing order of this magnitude and within five hours of it being requested,” Richard Alderman, the SFO director, said. “I am determined that supporting our US counterparts in this way becomes a routine example of cross-border co-operation.”Last week Stanford appeared in a Houston court, handcuffed in an orange jump suit, and pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud, conspiracy and obstruction. He stands accused of fraud totalling US$7 billion (£4.3 billion), and the charges include seven counts of wire fraud, 10 counts of mail fraud, conspiracy to obstruct an investigation for the Securities and Exchange Commission, obstruction of an investigation by the SEC and conspiracy to commit money laundering.A federal judge will, later on Tuesday, decide on bail for Stanford, which would see him freed while he awaits trial. If convicted, he faces up to 375 years in jail.

Rangers: Ross Wilson set for AFCON talks

Rangers are hopeful of reaching an agreement with the Nigerian FA that will allow Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey to feature against Celtic in January, according to The Sunday Mail.

The lowdown

Rangers are due to travel to Celtic Park for what will be the season’s second Old Firm on 2 January.

According to FIFA rules, clubs should release players who have been called up for the Africa Cup of Nations on 27 December. That would mean Rangers would lose the aforementioned trio for the trip to their Glasgow rivals.

But Nigeria are not due to kick-off their AFCON bid until 11 January, when they face Egypt.

Aribo has started nine of Rangers’ SPFL matches so far, Balogun eight and Bassey four. All three players feature in the Gers’ top seven performers up to this point when you go by WhoScored’s data.

Steven Gerrard raved about Aribo last week, hailing him as an ‘outstanding’ player and ‘a joy to watch’ before confessing that Rangers will ‘be lucky to keep him’.

The latest

Rangers are thought to be confident that they can strike a deal with Nigeria, delaying the trio’s arrival in the camp until after the derby.

Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard are hoping to take advantage of the strong relationship they have built with the Nigerian Football Association in the negotiations.

The verdict

After a slow start, Celtic have rattled off three successive wins to move within four points of Rangers. By the time January rolls around, this fixture could well have a season-defining air about it.

And it would be a huge blow to Rangers’ chances if they had to go without Balogun and Aribo.

They seem to be optimistic, having cultivated those good relations. But if the African associations push for a uniform release date in the interests of sporting integrity, then that could count for a little.

Everton transfer news on Holgate

Many Everton fans have been left slamming Mason Holgate as some transfer news emerged on his future this week.

As per The Liverpool Echo, both Brighton and Hove Albion and Norwich City made tentative enquiries about the possibility of signing the central defender in the summer transfer window, but it was made clear that he wanted to stay and regain a place in the starting eleven.

However, he has only managed to play in a mere four games in total over all competitions so far this season, with only two of those coming in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).

Holgate has recently said himself that his displays last season were not up to scratch (The Liverpool Echo), and with the January window coming up, a lot of Toffees supporters feel as if his time is now up at Goodison Park.

These Blues slammed Holgate as the transfer news was shared on Twitter, with one EFC fan even going as far as to claim that he is a ‘liability’, averaging just a 66 per cent pass accuracy in the top flight this term:

“He didn’t kick on last season when I hoped he would do after the end to the season before when he played very well. I think the time is right for him to move on. He’s 25 and can’t see him improving significantly enough to improve our squad.”

Champions Trophy could be relocated – Richardson

Weather concerns could prompt the ICC to move the Champions Trophy away from Sri Lanka. The tournament, scheduled to be played in October, may be shifted to Australia, South Africa or the United Arab Emirates, according to the ICC’s general manager, Dave Richardson. The seventh Champions Trophy was due to be held in Pakistan last year, but was postponed due to security concerns. The eight-team tournament has since been shrouded in uncertainty, with questions raised as to whether it could be accommodated in an already crowded international schedule and doubts over the suitability of Sri Lanka as a venue. Some critics have called for the Champions Trophy to be scrapped entirely, arguing that it now trails the World Cup and World Twenty20 in terms of prestige and holds little appeal for competing teams.Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Richardson admitted seasonal concerns – October is one of the wettest months in Colombo – had prompted the ICC to consider relocating the tournament to a drier venue. Richardson added that the 2009 Champions Trophy could be condensed to 12-days, and played in a region where two or more grounds are lin close proximity, thereby reducing travelling time between matches.”Some doubts have been raised as far as Sri Lanka is concerned mainly from the weather prospective,” Richardson said. “Questions have been raised whether it’s wise to hold a tournament where rain is often affecting in October.”If it’s not Sri Lanka, the board has decided that we want to hold the tournament over 12 days, which means that we have to have two venues in virtually the same city. Certainly there can’t be any question of international travel being involved. That itself narrows the options down considerably. Perhaps Perth, Johannesburg-Pretoria, Dubai-Abu Dhabi might be an option.”There are couple of options which need to be considered and (those venues) would be in frame when the decision is made.”

Tottenham transfer news on Kulusevski

Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly eyeing up a move to sign Dejan Kulusevski, who may leave in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: High praise

Kulusevski received high praise from none other than his former teammate and world superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for his performances last season, as the now Manchester United striker described him as an ‘excellent’ player who is a ‘great talent’ with ‘great potential’ (90min).

The Sweden international managed to score seven goals and make a further seven assists in 47 games in total over all competitions last term with Juventus (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: January move?

As per Calciomercato, Kulusevski is ‘very popular’ at Spurs, and Juve are considering selling him in January in order to fund a move for another Lilywhites target in Dusan Vlahovic.

Of course, that means any move from north London to sign the Swedish starlet would be as an alternative to Vlahovic, with whom they have been heavily linked.

There are a number of clubs in Italy also looking at Kulusevski’s signature, and the winger’s priority is to play for a team in the UEFA Champions League.

The Verdict: Sign

If the Lilywhites can fend off the competition, then they must look to do a deal for Kulusevski.

He has already shown that he can perform at the highest level for the Old Lady, and at just 21 years of age, still has so much potential – you don’t play 47 games in a season in Turin if you aren’t ready to compete at the highest level.

Nonetheless, it is pretty rare that a player of his quality becomes available in January, and so THFC should sign him to help push Nuno Espirito Santo’s side up the table in the Premier League.

EFC fans rage at Rodriguez news

Everton fans are livid after it was revealed the Toffees are willing to pay some of James Rodriguez’s wages for him to leave the club before the Turkish window slams shut.

When Rodriguez made the move to Goodison Park from Real Madrid last summer, there was shock around the footballing world. He showed signs of his ability on Merseyside, scoring six goals and providing five assists (Transfermarkt), but the departure of Carlo Ancelotti appears to have left the 29-year-old without much desire to stay put (talkSPORT).

It seems there may be a way out for the Colombia international. As per Pipe Sierra, Istanbul Basaksehir are interested in signing the attacking midfielder and, in a bid to push through the deal, Everton would be willing to pay part of his wages. This has angered the club’s supporters, who believe there is no point in letting him go if that is the case.

The news was shared on Twitter by @ToffeeTVEFC, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Gers supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Rauf takes five again to inspire Baluchistan

Abdur Rauf’s second five-wicket haul of the 2008-09 Pentangular Cup final gave Baluchistan a great shot at lifting their maiden title

Cricinfo staff26-Nov-2008
ScorecardAbdur Rauf’s second five-wicket haul of the 2008-09 Pentangular Cup final gave Baluchistan a great shot at lifting their maiden title at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. North-West Frontier Province’s lead was 154 when they resumed on day three, but Rauf kept a check on proceedings to leave Baluchistan a target of 272. Their openers scored 33 by stumps.NWFP’s top score was Adnan Raees’ 98. Rauf gave his side the perfect start, dismissing Wajid Ali first thing in the morning. At 214, he removed Aftab Alam (35) and Zulfiqar Jan (0) and added Yasir Shah later on. Raees pretty much waged a lone battle, batting 210 minutes and unfortunately missing a century by two runs when Rauf bowled him to complete ten wickets in the match, the third time he has done so in first-class cricket. There were four zeros in NWFP’s second innings.Shoaib Khan snr finished unbeaten on 22 with Usman Tariq batting on 4. Baluchistan’s first-innings folded for 174, but inspired by Rauf’s heroics, they may find strength for their fourth-innings chase.
