West Ham in Armstrong battle

According to a report by the Sun, West Ham United are in a three-way battle with Southampton and Norwich to sign Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong.

The Lowdown: Armstrong and the Hammers…

Links to Armstrong have been fairly consistent over the last few months, with ExWHUemployee saying back in March that he is on the shortlist of striker targets for GSB and co this summer (Patreon).

A recent report by the Lancashire Telegraph even explained how a Hammers enquiry has already been lodged for the player this summer.

The striking position is said to be a main priority for the club to strengthen this transfer window alongside the acquisition of a star centre-back and Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal (Claret & Hugh).

The Latest: West Ham in three-way tussle…

Bringing an update, the Sun now say that West Ham are still in contention for Armstrong but face a three-way battle to sign him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Norwich City and Southampton are the other interested parties tussling it out for the £25 million-rated Championship star.

Meanwhile, Armstrong’s current club are already weighing up a replacement in case he does leave Ewood Park.

Indeed, Rovers have apparently set their sights on Blackpool star Jerry Yates as his possible heir.

The Verdict: Perfect target?

Armstrong has earned many admirers from within the Championship and beyond.

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Warburton showered the 24-year-old with praise back in February, calling him an ‘outstanding’ and Premier League-level centre forward (West London Sport).

Meanwhile, pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor even told Football Insider that he would be a ‘perfect signing’ for West Ham specifically.

However, if Blackburn demand £25m for his signature, you could say that it would be a gamble despite his tremendous 29-goal haul in all competitions over 2020/2021 (Transfermarkt).

Armstrong has little experience in the English top flight and West Ham arguably need a forward who is proven at the very highest level and can score consistently against toughest opposition.

Therefore, despite his accolades and plaudits, we believe his price tag could still make him a risky purchase.

MCFC fans slam transfer report

Manchester City fans are far from happy after it was revealed Benjamin Mendy, Gabriel Jesus, Aymeric Laporte, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva could all be sold this summer.

The 2020/21 season is now officially over, and the Citizens can look back on a campaign which included extreme highs and of course one devastating low.

They came away with two trophies, winning the Premier League and the League Cup, but the one thing they want the most, the Champions League, slipped from their grasp as they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the final in Porto last Saturday.

Plans will already be underway to prepare for the new campaign, and there could be a number of players leaving the club. According to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, as many as six first-team regulars could be moved on this summer.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform the share their thoughts.

Everton: Ben Godfrey has England chance

Everton defender Ben Godfrey could be a surprise inclusion in England’s squad for the European Championships.

That’s according to David Ornstein, a journalist at The Athletic.

The lowdown

Everton signed Godfrey from Norwich City last October for a fee of £25m and he’s gone on to make 31 Premier League appearances this season for the Blues, who finished 10th.

Back in February, BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty hailed Godfrey as a ‘revelation’ after an impressive debut campaign for the Toffees. He has averaged 1.8 successful aerial duels, 1.8 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 3.5 clearances and 1.2 blocks per match minutes in the top flight in 2020/21 (via WhoScored).

The latest

Gareth Southgate is set to name his 26-man squad for this summer’s tournament on Tuesday, and in a piece for The Athletic, Ornstein has said that Godfrey is ‘one to keep an eye on’. Southgate has apparently ‘watched a lot’ of him this season, meaning that he’s very much ‘in the mix’.

Ornstein added that many players are still said to be unsure whether they will feature and are expected to be told only a matter of hours before the public announcement.

The verdict

Godfrey would be a worthy inclusion for England at Euro 2020, especially ahead of someone like Eric Dier, who has been culpable of numerous costly defensive errors this season. The Tottenham man has also averaged fewer tackles, interceptions, clearances and blocks per game than his Everton counterpart.

The 23-year-old Toffees ace has demonstrated his versatility by operating across the back four, making him a real asset to Carlo Ancelotti at Goodison Park and, possibly, to Southgate this summer.

Ornstein is right – keep an eye on this one, folks.

Tottenham fans blast Sergio Reguilon

During the first half of Tottenham Hotspur’s encounter with Leeds United at Elland Road, many Lilywhites supporters have slammed the first half display of Sergio Reguilon following his contribution to the home side’s opening goal.

The Spaniard was handed another start in a back four alongside the likes of Serge Aurier, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier – and it’s safe to say supporters aren’t impressed with his first half showing.

Among the lowest-rated players on SofaScore, the 2020 Spurs summer signing played a heavy hand in Leeds’ first half goal which opened the scoring in Yorkshire.

Indeed, the 24-year-old almost scored an own goal only for keeper Hugo Lloris to somehow keep it out.

Regardless, the left-back wasn’t watching Stuart Dallas for the rebound who proceeded to smash home the loose ball.

Fry says FSG committed ‘unforgivable’ sin

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has savaged Liverpool’s owners in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, insisting that they are “unforgivable” after their attempt to join a European Super League.

The football world was in shock last week as six English clubs, along with various sides from the continent, attempted to form a breakaway league.

Liverpool were one of the clubs at the front of the queue, and were joined by Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur from the Premier League.

All six clubs were forced into a humiliating climbdown as they all withdrew just 48 hours after attempting to set the league up, but not before Jurgen Klopp was forced into an excruciating interview with Sky Sports.

Speaking prior to his side’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, Klopp seemed blindsided by the plans and was unhappy with the club’s desire to enter what was essentially a closed shop.

And Fry thinks that FSG’s conduct was beyond the pale, especially as Klopp was not informed of the plans.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Fry let rip, as he said: “Well you could clearly see when he was being questioned that he was uncomfortable for the mere fact that he didn’t know anything about it.

“For what that man has done for Liverpool Football club and for the city of Liverpool, is absolutely incredible and it’s unforgivable to not keep your manager in the loop of what you intend to do.”

Leeds keen on Noni Madueke signing

Leeds United are believed to be one of several clubs interested in signing England under-21s starlet Noni Madueke this summer.

Marcelo Bielsa is expected to be on the lookout for new signings come the end of the season as he aims to build on an impressive first campaign back in the Premier League.

It looks increasingly likely that the Whites will secure a mid-table finish in the top flight, currently sitting 11th in the table with nine matches remaining.

Leeds interested in Madueke move

Reinforcements could arrive all over the pitch, but attacking additions could be particularly key, assuming Rodrigo leaves after a disappointing season at Elland Road.

According to the Evening Standard, Leeds are eyeing up a move for PSV Eindhoven star Madueke, with the 19-year-old scoring seven goals and registering four assists in 19 Eredivisie appearances this season.

Crystal Palace and Bayern Munich are also believed to be interested in signing the teenager, as well as some more of ‘Europe’s elite’ clubs.

Transfer Tavern take

It is always nice to see young English talent head to Leeds and Madueke looks a hugely exciting prospect, considering how much he has shone for PSV at such a young age.

Aidy Boothroyd, his manager at England under-21 level, was effusive in his praise of the teenager, saying: “He’s certainly a very talented young man, really excited to be called up by the Under 21s, and a little bit like Phil [Foden] last time, nobody had really heard of him until he came and played in the tournament.

“They knew a little bit about him but that set him off on a trajectory and we’re hoping Noni can create even more positive attention for the way that they play. He’s got a lovely infectious character that comes out even over the phone.” [via Daily Mail]

The forward would be a long-term addition at Leeds and would be afforded the luxury of working with one of the most respected managers around in Marcelo Bielsa, who hopefully can make this deal happen.

In other news, Leeds are thought to be keen on a move for an attacking player enjoying an excellent season. Find out who it is here.

Aston Villa should look at Saint-Maximin

Speaking exclusively to Transfer Tavern, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has urged his old side to move for Allan Saint-Maximin this summer if Newcastle United end up getting relegated.

Firmly caught up in a relegation battle this season, the Magpies could find themselves playing in the Championship next term. Such a scenario could easily see some of their star players push for a move, with Saint-Maximin falling into that category.

The 24-year-old French winger is the best dribbler at the club, averaging the most dribbles per league game (3.2, per WhoScored), and Hendrie believes that sort of flair out wide is something Villa severely lack.

“He is one that I would certainly take,” the ex-Villa player told TT when discussing Saint-Maximin in an exclusive interview. “He’s got that Premier League credibility. We’ve seen what he can do.”

Hendrie later went on to add:

“He’s got that attack rate, he’s got flair, you know, all sorts. He could be a key addition to a Villa side that I feel… that’s where they’ve really lacked, in wide areas.

“Touched on Trezeguet before, I think he’d certainly come into the side, he reminds me in certain elements of [Bertrand] Traore, but he’s possibly got that little bit more element of pace going forward and he’s very direct, so he’d be someone I’d certainly be looking at.”

Trezeguet and Traore both looked sharp in Villa’s recent 3-1 win over Fulham. The former managed to grab two goals on the day, while the latter was able to muster up an assist.

Next up for the attacking duo is the visit of Liverpool, while Saint-Maximin and Newcastle take on Burnley.

Assim, Arthur e Jadson serão sacados do time.Fianlizando a lista, Wallyson, Edson Kölln e Wellington Cézar recuperaram-se de lesão e também estão à disposição.
