Romano drops Grealish to Man City update

Manchester City’s hopes of signing Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish have accelerated in recent days, with Fabrizio Romano providing the latest on his potential move.

What’s the word?

It was reported on Friday that Manchester City had submitted an official £100m bid for the England international, who has emerged as one of Pep Guardiola’s top targets this summer.

Romano has now provided an update on the 25-year-old on Twitter, saying: “Manchester City are pushing to complete the Jack Grealish deal “in the next few days”. Medical ready if a total agreement will be reached with Aston Villa. Official talks started two days ago with a deadline: agreement within next week or Jack will sign a new deal with Villa.”

Will Grealish be a good signing for Man City?

Unless Dean Smith’s side are able to convince Grealish to sign a new deal at Villa Park, it seems very likely that the winger will be making the move to the Etihad Stadium this summer. After his superb performances in recent seasons, there is little to suggest that he won’t be a good addition to Guardiola’s squad.

Last season saw the former Notts County loanee make 26 appearances in the Premier League, in which he contributed six goals and 10 assists, averaging a superb 7.56 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Only Kevin De Bruyne averaged a higher rating for Man City last season as they ran away with the Premier League title, and it seems fair to suggest that Grealish’s attacking output in terms of goals and assists will only improve with Guardiola’s coaching and the world-class teammates surrounding him at the Etihad.

It will be interesting to see where the creative forward will fit in, as he will likely be competing with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez for a berth out wide. However, if he can replicate his form from recent seasons with the Citizens, then he will quickly become a key player for Guardiola’s side.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

Therefore, City fans will no doubt be buzzing with this latest update from Romano and will be hoping that a deal can be completed ahead of their Community Shield clash against Leicester City next weekend.

West Ham linked to Sven Botman

West Ham United have been linked with a move for Lille defender Sven Botman as manager David Moyes looks to bolster his first-team squad.

What’s the story?

According to Sky Sports News, the Hammers are keen on securing the 21-year-old’s signature this summer, although they’re set to face stiff competition from several clubs, both at home and abroad.

The report states that Botman is the first-choice candidate of Atalanta to replace Tottenham Hotspur-bound Cristian Romero, while Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Norwich City and unnamed Bundesliga clubs are also credited with an interest.

Moyes would love him

Botman arrived at the Stade Pierre Mauroy last summer as Gabriel’s replacement following his £27 million transfer to Arsenal.

His purchase represented a gamble for Lille, with the Dutch Under-21 international having never played a senior game for boyhood club Ajax.

However, the youngster impressed during a season-long spell for Heerenveen throughout 2019/20 and formed a formidable partnership alongside veteran Jose Fonte at the heart of defence.

Botman’s magnificent performances saw him record 1.5 interceptions per league game last term, 3.2 clearances and 0.6 blocks, placing him in the top three amongst his teammates for each metric, as per WhoScored.

And the 6 ft 3 beast played a pivotal part as Lille shocked French football to secure the Ligue 1 title for the first time in 10 years, knocking the all-conquering Paris Saint-Germain off their perch.

Despite his magnificent displays, Sky Sports News claim they have been told that, should a team come in with a similar offer to the £27m Lille received for Gabriel, the club’s hierarchy would take it under consideration.

While the club’s business model is built around buying young, promising players for cheap prices before developing them and selling them for astronomical profit, the pandemic and collapse of the French football television deal has also enhanced Lille’s willingness to offload their prized assets this summer.

It remains to be seen whether West Ham follow up their interest in Botman with a concrete offer, but with the youngster being a left-footed, physically imposing centre-half with a title-winning season under his belt, Moyes would surely love to have him at the London Stadium as he looks to embark on a European campaign this season.

The Hammers are set to embark on a hectic schedule next season given their involvement in the Europa League, and Fabian Balbuena’s departure has left a sizeable gap in the capital club’s backline.

Botman would be a perfect replacement and major coup for the east London outfit, and the supporters will surely be urging GSB to get this deal over the line.

Spurs: Sessegnon can save Nuno millions

Ryan Sessegnon could save Tottenham Hotspur a lot of money this summer.

The versatile 21-year-old winger has found life in north London difficult since a £25m move from Fulham in the summer of 2019, playing only 12 times for Spurs, which led towards him going out on loan to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim last season.

They managed to give him regular game-time as he featured in 29 matches across all competitions, in which he provided two goals and three assists, via Transfermarkt.

As we’ve seen in the development of players like Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson down the road at Arsenal, this sort of switch can often be the springboard for immediate success.

Tottenham have just appointed a manager who has often put his faith in young players. Nuno Espirito Santo often deployed the likes of Pedro Neto, Vitinha, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Fabio Silva throughout the 2020/21 campaign and it is expected that he looks to develop Spurs’ own crop of emerging hopefuls.

Sessegnon is one of those in line for a big opportunity, especially as he seems like an ideal fit for whatever system the Portuguese boss utilises.

As revealed by football.london’s Alasdair Gold, Spurs’ interest in Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is crucial for Sergio Reguilon to reach his potential as the very best left wing-back he can be.

The Japanese centre-back is more like a defensive right-back, which means that the Spanish dynamo can kick on and attack when he slots into a back-three in a forward transition.

Sessegnon very much fits this mould too, having been signed as a versatile option anywhere down that left flank, and given that Ben Davies has been mooted with an exit from the club, the 21-year-old gem could well save Daniel Levy and co millions as they won’t have to fund a new replacement.

Furthermore, Gareth Bale has returned to Real Madrid following the expiry of his loan spell in north London, whilst it’s thought that Spurs are willing to listen to offers for fellow wide options Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura, so the 5 foot 10 dynamo could quickly rise up the pecking order in that position too.

Described as a “big, big talent” with a “bright” future and lauded for his speedy attributes, it’s surely time that we see Sessegnon given a real crack at becoming a future star at Spurs.

Nuno should turn to the £16.2m-rated prospect next season rather than sending him out for another temporary spell away from N17.

CPFC: Fans react to Papa John’s Trophy draw

Crystal Palace’s Thursday was a busy one to say the least.

Lucien Favre was set to sign a three-year deal to become the club’s new manager, however, by the end of the day, was out of the running to take over at Selhurst Park.

The 63-year-old informed the Eagles he does not feel ready for a top-level management return, putting Steve Parish and co back to square one.

Another Thursday development involving the Eagles was the Papa John’s Trophy group stage draw.

Palace’s academy side will take part in the competition for the 2021/22 campaign and have been drawn against AFC Wimbledon, Portsmouth and Sutton United.

The Eagles will play all their games away from home, which will give Palace’s youngsters a taste of senior competitive football alongside their academy division.

Palace fans react

Palace shared the group stage draw on their official Twitter page on Thursday afternoon.

These Eagles fans were excited at the news, with one describing it as ‘absolutely cracking’.

“Exciting times for the Academy; whole new Academy site, those making a name for themselves coming through and now we’ve got the youngsters involved in what will both be a brilliant experience on a personal note and competitively for them. Let’s get behind the U21s”

It is this that Kevin Shine and myself must guard against by continually stimulating and challenging the players to want to experience it all over again.”There is also a fascinating article from Somerset Coach Kevin Shine regarding the introduction of technology and new training methods to help the players in their quest for even greater success and more trophies. In his article Chief Executive Peter Anderson also warns about the dangers of complacency and reminds the players: “Standards of county cricket are rising as players become fitter, more motivated and therefore competitive. The teams biggest enemy is complacency, so watch it Somerset!”The Chief Executive outlines the likely format for the future of first-class cricket in England, and also talks about the perennial problems of finance.Mr Anderson also raises the question of changing from a Members’ Club to a Private Limited Company, and inevitably the issues of relocation or redevelopment of the County Ground are also mentioned. The Spring Newsletter is an update of how things have developed over the winter, and provides an insight into what lies ahead during the coming season. To access the Spring Newsletter in full why not find the heading on the main menu and click on to it and read it for yourself.

Elyounoussi set for Saints chance

Southampton could be heading for a huge disaster as Ralph Hasenhuttl has seemingly made a decision about Mo Elyounoussi’s future at the club.

What’s the talk?

According to Norweigan outlet VG, Southampton manager Hasenhuttl has decided that he wants to give Mo Elyounoussi a chance next season at St. Mary’s. The report claims that Southampton are lacking options in the wide attacking midfield roles and that Hasenhuttl believes Elyounoussi could return from his loan at Celtic and fight for his place in the team.

VG also claims that several German teams are eyeing up a move for the Norway international. Wolfsburg, Frankfurt and Hertha Berlin are all interested in Elyounoussi and would make a swoop for him this summer if Southampton decides to make him available, although the report rules out any type of loan exit for the forward.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton labelled Elyounoussi as a “disappointment” earlier this season and said that that he flattered to deceive in the Scottish Premiership.. He told the Record Celtic podcast, as transcribed by 67HailHail:

“With Elyounoussi, I think he’s flattered to deceive at times. His goal tally for club and country surprises me a little bit, but he hasn’t been consistent enough and I think he’s been a disappointment if I’m honest.

“Celtic getting him back was a big deal. I was really excited about that link-up between Elyounoussi and Edouard at the start of the season because in the previous season there were signs in patches that their understanding was really exceptional.”

Heading for disaster

Southampton and Hasenhuttl are heading for a disaster with this decision. Instead of dipping into the market to bring in a top-class addition to the squad to improve the team going into next season, they appear to be exploring the possibility of gambling on Elyounoussi being a different player to the one he was for the club in the Premier League previously.

This could be a cost-cutting method for Southampton rather than one with the best intentions of improving the squad in mind, as it would allow them to avoid spending on a new signing.

Elyounoussi struggled in his first season at Southampton in the Premier League. The winger failed to provide a single goal or assist in 16 appearances, eight starts, as he averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.51. He averaged 0.9 key passes and 0.7 dribbles completed per game, highlighting his lack of quality at Premier League level which led to his loan move to Celtic the following season.

The £60k-per-week flop must have seriously impressed at Celtic for Hasenhuttl to change his mind then? Well, no, not really.

In the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership season, the forward racked up eight goals and two assists in 29 appearances for the Hoops, averaging a WhoScored rating of 6.72. This does not suggest that he is now somehow ready to make the step up to Premier League football as he failed to set the Scottish Premiership alight.

Southampton could be making a grave error by rejecting the German interest in his services to give him another chance in Premier League.
