Who are the USMNT's best players? Key performers to watch in World Cup 2022 knockout rounds

The Stars and Stripes are into the knockout stage – GOAL takes a look at their key players

The United States men's national team has emerged from Group B and their performances have instilled plenty of belief that they can go even further at World Cup 2022.

Gregg Berhalter's side managed to hold England – one of the tournament favourites – to a scoreless draw and showed tremendous nerve to overcome Iran and book their place in the knockout stage.

They find themselves in the side of the knockout bracket that contains the Netherlands, who they play in the last 16, Argentina, Croatia and other heavyweights, but have enough quality of their own not to give way to trepidation.

GOAL takes a look at the best USMNT players at Qatar 2022.

Captain fantastic, Tyler Adams has been the beating heart and engine room of the USMNT's efforts at the World Cup in Qatar.

The Leeds United midfielder played every minute of every game in the group stage, acquitting himself admirably against the likes of Jude Bellingham, Mason Mount and Declan Rice in the draw against England.

His words off the pitch have drawn praise from colleagues, fans and rivals, while his performances on the field have earned comparisons to legendary France midfielder N'Golo Kante. That likeness is no exaggeration either, considering he is the player with easily the most possession wins for the U.S. at the tournament.

Fulham veteran Tim Ream continues to defy the march of time by bringing his sparkling Premier League form to Qatar and starring for the Stars and Stripes in defence. The USMNT only conceded one goal in the group stage and, as well as tussling impressively with Gareth Bale, Ream managed to keep Harry Kane quiet.

Despite being 35 years of age, Ream played the entirety of every game in the group stage and showed little sign of tiring, which is a testament to how well the centre-back looks after himself. A leader, he has rolled back the years at this World Cup, seizing the opportunity presented to him by Gregg Berhalter..

He may have Ajax, Barcelona and now AC Milan on his soccer CV, but Sergino Dest had something to prove when he arrived at the World Cup and he has certainly silenced a few doubters with his displays up and down the wing.

The flying full-back put the cross in for Christian Pulisic's crucial winner against Iran and his passes into the box have been a real asset, especially on the counter-attack. Defensively, Dest has been strong too, rarely putting a foot wrong.

Christian Pulisic has truly risen to the occasion for the USMNT at the World Cup, chipping in with an all-important goal against Iran and supplying an assist against Wales. The Chelsea forward's club career may have stalled somewhat, but he remains a key component for the national team.

While primarily known for his technical ability, shooting and passing range, Pulisic's performances in Qatar have shown another side too, with the Hershey native putting his body on the line for his country. Compatriot Kellyn Acosta lauded Pulisic's bravery, telling reporters he has been "tough as nails" at the World Cup. He has transformed from 'Wonderboy' to Superman.

Presidente do Palmeiras comemora Florida Cup: 'Todo título é importante'

E conseguimos o título do torneio.

Ailing Northants propose change of ownership

Ailing Northamptomshire want to put the club up for sale and are aiming to raise a minimum of £1m by offering the chance of group equity investment in a new company

George Dobell24-Mar-2016Ailing Northamptonshire are aiming to raise a minimum of £1m by offering the chance of group equity investment to buy the county cricket club.Northants announced losses of £449,127 after tax earlier this month – a deterioration of some £144,000 from the previous year – with gross turnover also down and membership falling. The size of the deficit was a surprise in what was generally a highly successful year for county clubs bouyed by a payout from an Ashes summer and rising T20 attendances.Only a few days ago, the club’s chairman, Gavin Warren, said Northants was in a “strong position”. Such assurances sounded hollow after the club issued a statement on Thursday evening, saying: “While the current cash-flow situation has been stabilised – and the club is embarking on the new season with confidence – it doesn’t provide the long-term financial security that the club requires to prosper and grow.”While it recently emerged that the club had invested in plans for a new ground on the outskirts of town – a claim published by ESPNcricinfo and originally denied by the club management, many of whom have a background in property development – the board insist that they have no intention of moving from Wantage Road and that legal provision will be made to prevent development of the site for any non-cricket purpose.Northamptonshire say they hope to be able to bring in 10 to 15 major investors, most of whom they say already have links to the club as supporters and benefactors, to provide some £50,000 each to allow for a reduction in the short-term debt and give additional working capital.Current directors, some of whom have loaned funds to the county at commercial rates of interest, would be able to transfer those loans into shares. They also intend to offer existing members of the county cricket club the opportunity to buy shares, with a minimum subscription of £250. Under the proposals, members would also elect a director on the new board.”The proposal is to allow 10 to 15 major investors to provide a minimum of £50,000 each,” a statement read.”Existing members will also have the opportunity to buy shares with a minimum subscription of £250.”A new limited company will be formed which would become the owner of Northants, subject to the consent of current members.”It is expected that the current board of directors will remain in place to ensure continuity and a smooth handover.”An emergency general meeting is expected to be convened “within the next few months” with the aim of forming a new limited company to own the club.It remains to be seen if Northants members will accept the proposal and if they will regard the legal protection foir cricket at Wantage Road as strong enough once further details are released.

Champions Tuskers end with defeat

Tuskers had already secured the title but they could not end on a winning note, as Eagles completed a six-wicket win in the final round of games. Wellington Masakadza picked up 9 for 90, his best match figures, as Tuskers were dismissed for 174 in their second innings. Keith Kondo finished the match with a six as Eagles hustled past their target of 71 in 17.2 overs. The platform for victory had been laid on the second and third days, as wicketkeeper Joylord Gumbie compiled his maiden first-class hundred. Gumbie finished unbeaten on 168 after batting for seven-and-a-half hours as Eagles totalled 356. Kondo (64) was the only other batsman to pass 30 but Gumbie’s efforts helped secure a 104-run lead.Tuskers had chosen to bat but could only manage 252, with slow left-armer Masakadza – younger brother of Hamilton and Shingi – taking 5 for 47. They fared even worse in their second innings, losing 9 for 82 after Keith Dabengwa fell for an aggressive 54, but Tuskers were already in an unassailable position at the top of the table, crowned Logan Cup champions for 2014-15.

Yusuf Pathan slaps spectator

Yusuf Pathan allegedly reacted to “indecent comments” by a young spectator by slapping him during a Ranji Trophy match between Baroda and Jammu & Kashmir in Vadodara

PTI24-Dec-2014Yusuf Pathan allegedly reacted to “indecent comments” by a young spectator by slapping him during a Ranji Trophy match between Baroda and Jammu & Kashmir in Vadodara. The Baroda allrounder was upset by remarks passed by the spectator when he was batting.According to Snehal Parikh, the Baroda Cricket Association secretary, the spectator had been passing “indecent comments” against Yusuf as well as other players during the match.”This youngster had been shouting and passing indecent comments against Pathan and other players, such as Ambati Rayudu, when they were batting,” Parikh said. “Pathan was in no mood to tolerate such behaviour. 'Disappointed' de Villiers pledges support for Amla

AB de Villiers has admitted “disappointment” at being overlooked as South Africa’s next Test leader but has pledged his full support for new captain Hashim Amla. De Villiers was considered the frontrunner for the position Graeme Smith vacated in March and in an interview with ESPNcricinfo had declared himself “ready” to lead and give up the wicket-keeping gloves if necessary, but that was not enough to convince the selection panel.”I will not beat around the bush. I’m disappointed that I’m not the captain,” de Villiers told the Afrikaans newspaper . “Everyone has dreams and ambitions and hopes they will become reality but I accept the situation and will not let it come between me and Hashim. It would be very stupid of me if I let it affect my game and my role in the team. The choice is made. I wish Hashim all the best and will give him all of my support.”Although neither de Villiers nor convener of selectors Andrew Hudson would reveal when the former was informed about the decision, Hudson explained at Amla’s appointment on Tuesday that all the candidates for captaincy were consulted and gave their support to the selectors’ choice.”Processes were followed. We’ve spoken to the guys who were close and that little group of senior players are all supportive of Hashim,” Hudson said. “We said to the guys ‘This is what’s coming’ and the guys said they were behind it 100%. There’s this group of senior players – Dale (Steyn), Morne (Morkel), Faf (du Plessis), AB, JP (Duminy) – that are behind Hashim and they respect him. He hasn’t just got two or three guys that support him, he has got a core.”Amla also had the backing of his predecessor Smith, who tweeted a message, part of which read, “Congrats my bud and excited to watch you shape proteas test future,” while recent retiree Jacques Kallis called Amla’s promotion “well deserved.”The reasons for the selection committee’s unanimous recommendation of Amla, which the board ratified, was put down to “deciding who we thought was best for the job,” Hudson said, with a focus on ensuring the transition phase will be as smooth as possible. “Hashim is solid and sets an example and he can continue the team culture going forward,” Hudson said. “One of the great things is that 90% of what the team needs to be successful is already there and needs to be continued and I think Hashim’s leadership style will suit this continuum.”Amla’s previous reluctance to lead – as recently as last year he stepped down as vice-captain of the limited-overs squads – was not a concern for the selectors, who understood his thinking at that time. “It was about trying to get his batting right. Hashim is quite intentional. His intention was to get his batting right and he felt that was first port of call,” Hudson said. “Now that he is at that point where he is more comfortable than what he was with his batting, he feels he can contribute in other areas. Captaincy is one where he can leave a deposit that will far outlast the runs that he scores. He can influence youngsters and he is good with people.”Hudson also denied the selectors were motivated by any desire to break up a small controlling group, which the likes of Herschelle Gibbs had claimed was in operation. In his biography Gibbs said Smith, Kallis, Mark Boucher and de Villiers controlled the team and there were lingering whispers that power balance remained in place. “I don’t know how much of a clique there really was,” Hudson said. “I think a lot of it was speculation.”Hudson also brushed aside talk there was political pressure involved in Amla’s appointment, rather focusing on the positives of giving South Africa’s its first full-time captain of colour. “It’s great that we’ve got a player of colour as a captain but it wasn’t the reason why we chose him. We chose him on merit and in terms of his ability and on what we think the team needs in this next era.”Ultimately, the choice between Amla and de Villiers may have been made by, as one insider put it, the need to “maintain team stability” at a time of great change. With Smith and Kallis retiring in quick succession and leaving gaps to be plugged in the batting line-up, using a rookie keeper may not have been in the plans. That means, not for the first time, de Villiers will be asked to put service above self, but if there is one person who is willing to do that, it is him. He is already looking forward to the role he can play as Amla’s deputy at Test level and to ensuring South Africa return to the top of the Test rankings.”As vice-captain of the team I will closely work with Hashim and believe we can make a good combination,” de Villiers said. “I accept that it is not always moonshine and roses and you can’t expect things must always go your way. In the end, we are all working together in the best interests of South African cricket. I believe Hashim will make a success of the assignment. He is a very experienced and senior player and is a fine student of the game. We will all pull in the right direction do to make sure our cricket comes out on top again.”

Sood stars in Delhi's second win

Delhi cantered to their second successive win in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, comfortably overhauling Jammu & Kashmir‘s total with six wickets in hand. Opting to bowl, Delhi’s bowlers made their mark early in the match by getting rid of the J&K openers within the first three overs. Left-arm spinner Varun Sood then aggravated J&K’s problems by picking up two wickets in the ninth over and the rest of the batting line-up, apart from a fighting 38-ball 44 from Parvez Rasool, caved in to finish at 119 for 8. Sood, with three wickets for 14, was the best bowler.Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir could not repeat their first match heroics, both falling to Abid Nabi, but Unmukt Chand scored a composed 41-ball 39 to anchor the chase. Rajat Bhatia added an unbeaten 16-ball 28 to complete the chase with an over to spare.A five-wicket haul by the right-arm seamer Ashish Hooda helped Haryana to their second win, beating Services by eight runs in Mohali. Chasing 145, Services began well with their openers Yashpal Singh and Nakul Verma adding 60. Hooda got rid of the top three in quick succession and it triggered a collapse. Soumya Swain remained unbeaten on 32 but lacked support as Services batted out 20 overs and could only manage 136. Hooda finished with his best T20 figures of 5 for 22. The win was set up by Avi Barot, who carried his bat for 78. Barot stabilized the innings after they were 55 for 4. Most of the bowlers chipped in with a wicket each, with Rajat Paliwal taking 2 for 28.Punjab bounced back from their defeat to Haryana with a five-wicket victory over Himachal, which was completed in the final over thanks to Manpreet Gony’s 17-ball 35. The win was a team effort, with four batsmen reaching 24 but none crossing 35, and with four bowlers taking a wicket apiece. Himachal opener Prashant Chopra bludgeoned a 54-ball 90 to set up a total of 154, a target Punjab chased down with three balls to spare. If Gony’s quick 35 provided the finishing touches, it was Manan Vohra’s quick 35 that provided the early impetus. Harbhajan Singh struck three fours and two sixes after being promoted to No. 3, and also helped Punjab maintain a punishing pace early on.After two rounds, Delhi and Haryana have two wins, Services and Punjab have a win and a loss each, while Himachal and J&K have lost both their matches.
